When The Thunder Rolls

Emily Johnson, 17 years old, with a tough past and a lot of secrets. May sound familiar? But it's not.

This story is different.

When she was fourteen, she did something, no fourteen year old should do.

She witnessed something she will never forget.

Now she's running.

Hiding, along with her brothers.

Running to Stratford, she hoped that she could finally have some peace for a while, but when the thunder rolls, and the lightning strikes, memories flashes by...

1. Running

Third person

Three thirty in the morning, not a soul in sight. The city is looking like a ghost town on a moonless summer night. Raindrops on the windshield  there's a storm moving in. They are heading away from somewhere that they never should have been, while the thunder rolls. Every light is burning in a house across the town.  She is pacing by the window in her faded flannel gown. Looking out, she creeps together when another lightning strikes across the black sky. Letting out another sigh, she lets her eyes wander into the dark night.

The darkness surrounded them, as they drove off the gravel road, and onto a real one. Knowing that they had to get rid of the car as soon as possible, he took a sharp left turn, causing his little sister to smash her head into the window. Mentally cursing himself, he quickly turned his attention away from the road and towards her instead. Seeing that his brother was on it, his full attention was right back on the road he was driving at.

The lighting strikes once again, ripping the sky into pieces. She closes her eyes trying hard to deny the memories, the access they are asking for. Not wanting to remember, she slams her hand hard into the window. Feeling someone squeeze her hand, she takes three deep breaths, and calms herself down.

Hearing the thunder makes a single tear roll down her cheek. She wipes it away roughly, feeling stupid for crying.  A siren in the distance makes the car awfully quiet. They all know what will happen if the cops catch them. Taking another turn, they drive through a tough neighborhood. Looking out of the window, another lightning flash lighting up the whole street.

Opening the door, they all step out. A small smile creeps onto the faces of them all. Knowing that they were three houses away from freedom, make their adrenaline rush through their veins. She was the first one to take a step towards the old house. With every step they take, they get closer to freedom.

Knocking on the old wooden door, she takes a step back, standing in between her brothers. Waiting a few seconds before the door opens and out steps their ticket to freedom. He looks at her, smirking. Knowing what he is trying to do, her brother steps in front of her, shielding her from his hungry eyes. A sigh leaves his lips before he handles them a new shining silver key. Without other words, they walk down from the porch, not turning their back to him before they reach the car.

Driving past the house, they all let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding in. Relaxing her head on the shoulder of her brother, she fell into a deep, deep sleep full of evil laughter, pain and reality.

Looking at his little sister, he let out a deep sigh. This was the end, he wouldn’t let them get hurt any more. He would do everything in his power to get this family back on track. While driving, he kept thinking back on how it used to be. How happy they all used to be, when they were all together. Oh how he would wish his older brothers were here. They would know what to do. But he was alone on this, he had to make sure that his younger siblings were happy.

With that thought in his head, he took a left turn, relieved to finally see what they had been waiting to see. Shaking his siblings awake, they grabbed the few bags they had, and entered the airport, ready to get away from all the bad memories. Putting an arm on his sister shoulder, he smiled down at her. “This is our new beginning.” He whispered. She smiled, not that she believed him though. The past will always get you, at some point.
