Friend Zoned

Kylie and Liam have been best friends since pre-school. They’ve faced all challenges together, and high school was the biggest challenge yet. Kylie had become a socialite; became everyone’s best friend. Every girl wanted to be her, and every guy wanted to be her boyfriend. Liam had ended up on the other side of the school’s spectrum. He had very little friends that he could trust. What happens when one event affects their relationship as friends? Could it bloom into something more, or will their friendship stay the same?

9. Prom

Two weeks until prom and the guys were asking girls to prom. Harry still hasn’t made his move on Dani. “Are we the only two solo guys then?” he asked me as we sat down at our table. Zayn and Michaela were going, Niall and Erin, and Louis asked Isabella. “It seems like it.” I said.

“Why aren’t you going to ask Kylie?” He looked over at the cheerleading table to see that Kylie was sitting alone. “Maybe you should take her.” I told him and he looked at me. I stood up and walked out of the cafeteria.

After classes ended, I walked out to my car alone. This was a first in a long time. “Liam!” I turned around and saw that it was Kylie. “Hey.” I said as soon as she approached me. “Are you going to prom?” she asked.

Prom’s theme this year was a masquerade ball. “No, I decided not to.” I answered. She looked down and said, “Oh.” She sounded like she had been hurt. “I’ll see you later.” I said as she nodded and I got in my car, then drove down the street to my house.

One week away from prom and Harry finally got the courage to ask Dani. “Are you going to prom?” Niall asked while we walked to math class together. I shook my head. “It’s Senior prom mate.” he said as we entered the classroom.

Through the entire morning, all I could think about was prom. Kylie would be the only without a date, but she’d find one on her own. I know she will. During lunch, I sat outside - alone - while everyone else was inside. This is what I did for the remainder of the entire week.

Finally it was the week of prom. The event was this Saturday at 8pm. It was going to be held at a grand ballroom in one of the hotels. That Friday, I was home alone when my phone rang. “Hello?” I answered after picking up.

“Hey Liam, it’s Kylie. Want to go to the mall to help me pick out my dress? I’d ask the girls, but they were busy.” she said. I agreed to go with her to the mall. Once we arrived at the mall, we entered one of the department stores and went to the section where all the dresses were.

“Thanks for coming.” she said on the other side of the door in the dressing room to try on a few dresses she had selected. “Not a problem.” I said, leaning against the wall. The door opened and she walked out wearing the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen. It almost looked like a Cinderella ball gown, but gold.

“I hope this isn’t too much.” she said.

“It’s not. I’m sure your date would love it.” I gave her a half-hearted smile, and then she looked down. “I don’t have a date.” she said, then looked at me. As soon as she said those words, my heart had broken into a million pieces.

Such a beautiful girl with no date. “I want to thank you for the flowers Liam.” she smiled, then wrapped her arms around me and pulled me into a hug. I hugged her back and all of a sudden I felt her tears on my shirt.

She pulled away, beginning to wipe them away. I reached out, wiping them away for her. “I don’t ever want to see you cry.” I told her as she nodded, then hugged me again. “How did you know it was me?”

She pulled away and smiled, “I’d get a rose every year for Valentine’s Day. I asked Zayn - when we dated - if he was the one who bought me a rose, he told me that he didn’t know that a rose was my favorite flower. This year when I got a bouquet, it couldn’t have been Louis because I never told him. I knew it was always you. I wish... I wish you were going to prom this year.” She walked back into the dressing room and closed the door.

The next day was prom. I glanced at the clock and it was 8:30pm. Kylie and everyone else would be at prom right now. Everyone but me. It was my last year as a Senior. I’ve wished every single day that this day would come.

“One day when we’re older, I want my first dance to be with you at our Senior prom.” Kylie smiled. We were eating ice cream outside the ice cream place on the bench. She and I were both in the fifth grade. She already knew what she wanted in life, and as for me, I wasn’t even sure yet but I know that I would want Kylie in my life.

“We’re only in the fifth grade Kylie.” I said.

She smiled, “You have to think big to dream big, right? If you want your wish to come true, you’ll have to take risks for it.”

“You’re right.” I smiled.

“I wanna take all my risks with you.” she said.

Kylie was an optimistic person. Of all the times that I’ve doubted myself, she’s always pulled me out of that hole many times. When was she ever wrong?  I put on a tux, grabbed my mask, and drove to the hotel.

I parked my car, put on the mask, and entered the hotel. As I stepped into the grand ballroom, it was almost filled with at least a hundred people or so. They had just announced the winners for Prom King and Queen.

After they danced, everyone resumed dancing. I walked outside and saw Kylie walking around in the garden. “A beautiful girl like you should never be alone.” I said, seeing her turn around. A smile spread across her face as she ran over to me, wrapping her arms around my neck and I picked her up, twirling her around.

I set her down on the ground, looking into her eyes. “Liam, I’m so glad you came! What made you change your mind?” she asked.

“I want to have my last high school dance with my best friend.” I smiled, holding out a hand towards her direction. She smiled, taking my hand as we walked back into the grand ballroom and danced with each other.

The last slow song of the entire night began playing and I held Kylie closer. I never wanted this night to end because to me, it was only the beginning.
