Friend Zoned

Kylie and Liam have been best friends since pre-school. They’ve faced all challenges together, and high school was the biggest challenge yet. Kylie had become a socialite; became everyone’s best friend. Every girl wanted to be her, and every guy wanted to be her boyfriend. Liam had ended up on the other side of the school’s spectrum. He had very little friends that he could trust. What happens when one event affects their relationship as friends? Could it bloom into something more, or will their friendship stay the same?

11. I Love You

Graduation was coming up soon, but our teachers tell us there’s still a lot to do before graduation. For instance, we had to study for finals. Of course we weren’t looking forward to studying, but we would have to do well in order to graduate.

“Dead week sucks.” Kylie said. It was the week before finals. Dead week was a week where no fun was involved, but study... study... study. It was simply ridiculous. Kylie and I were at my house studying together for an entire week before finals.

“I know, but we have to know our stuff Kylie.” I said.

“You know your stuff. I suck at everything.” she pouted.

“You’ve kept your grades up for a whole year.”

“With your help.” she said. “I never realized that balancing homework and cheerleading was going to be hard. I guess now it seems to have paid off with you helping me.” Kylie and I were still the best of friends, but I never really got around to asking her to be my girlfriend.

Ever since prom, everyone already believed that she and I were together because of the way we acted around each other. Truthfully, this is how we always act around each other when we were younger. “I can’t wait to graduate.” she smiled.

Kylie wanted to be a veterinarian, and I wanted to be a teacher. Sure we were going on separate paths after high school, but we were always going to be best friends. “I can’t wait either.” I smiled.

Finals week was finally over and the only thing to worry about was graduation. “Hey Kylie.” I walked up to her in the hallways after the last of our finals had ended. “Hey, what’s up?” Kylie asked, flashing a smile towards my direction. “Do you have any plans after graduation?” I asked.

“Yeah, some of my family is in town for a week and um we’re going out to dinner after graduation.” she said. “Do you want to come with me, or do you have plans with your family?”

“You know what, go and have fun with your family.” I smiled, then turned and walked out of the school towards my car. I got in the car and drove down the street to my house.

Finally the day of graduation came; everyone was wearing their cap and gowns. "Can you believe that we're graduating?" Niall came up with a smile. It was only yesterday when we walked into the school as Freshman and now we were graduating.

"I'm surprised you didn't ask her to be your girlfriend yet." Harry said as I looked over at Kylie and her friends. "Why didn't you ask her?" Niall asked.

I shrugged, but that question ran through my mind. Kylie and I were going to different colleges. We watched as Zayn walked up to Kylie and talked to her.

They shared a laugh or two and then she said something to him before walking towards my direction. "Can I talk to Liam alone?" she asked, looking at Harry and Niall. The guys nodded and walked away to talk to the others.

"It's just like eighth grade graduation all over again." she said.

"Yeah, I guess so." I looked down as she reached out and gave me a hug. "I don't want to leave you." She looked up with tears in her eyes as I looked at her. I didn't want her to leave either, and the thought of letting her go broke my heart.

"Promise we'll keep in contact?" she asked as I nodded. She hugged me even tighter as I kissed the top of her head, holding her in my arms. We stayed like that until we had to go inside for the ceremony.

After the ceremony, Kylie and I went to our families who were congratulating us. I looked back over my shoulder to see Kylie walking away with her family. She only turned her head to look back at me and gave a small wave. I waved back knowing that would be the last time I'd ever see her.

My family and I went out to dinner, then drove back home. Finally I plopped down on my bed and looked up at the ceiling. My best friend and I were going separate ways. What hurt me the most was not telling her how I felt.

I got out of bed and went out the house, running down the street to Kylie's house. I reached her house and as I lifted my hand to knock on her door, the door opened. "I have something to tell you." I said.

"Me too." she said. "You first."

"No, you." I smiled.

She smiled, "I love you Liam."

"I love you too Kylie." I told her, then leaned in and kissed her lips. Her arms wrapped around my neck as I wrapped mine around her body, pulling her close to mine. We pulled away to look into each other's eyes. "I talked my parents into letting me stay for a year." she said.

She nodded as I gave her a hug. After everything that happened between us over the course of four years, who knew that such good would come our way.
