Emily Potter, Year 1

I’m Emily Lily Potter. If you haven’t already guessed by the last name, I’m Harry Potter's sister. We’re both the same age, we’re twins. I look like our mother and he looks like our father, Weird huh? I don’t live with the all terrible Dursley’s and I sure as heck don’t live under the stairs! I have been living with my godfather (Remus Lupin) since I was about 5. My mother (Lily Potter) dropped me off at the home of some Muggles less than a day before she died. But the first 5 years of my life were worse than Harry’s, since I was painfully skinny and usually ended cut by broken glass (I had magical issues with the windows). But Lupin managed to locate me when I was 5 and it was a heck of a lot better after that. Anyway, I’m going to go to Hogwarts soon and that should be real fun, maybe I’ll even make some friends!

4. The Sorting Hat

Hogwarts was a vast castle with many turrets and towers perched atop a high mountain. I smiled it was fantastic. We all jumped into boats and sailed off across the lake. I was with Jasmine and a two girls with long dark brown hair. “Hi I’m Alex by the way, Alex Shade.” Said Alex whose hair was in a braid and whose eyes were a grass colored green. I smiled at her, “I’m Catherine Torcher, or Cat as everyone calls me.” Cat said and smiled she was at least a head taller than Alex with straighter hair and evergreen eyes. They seemed to know each other well.

Finally the boat reached shore and we all climbed out. Cat was abnormally tall towering over everyone else by at least a head. She looked as though she was an adult. She crushed her head against her neck as if to make herself a more normal size.

My eyes roamed the crowd as we walked up the door (following Hagrid) I was looking about for Harry but failed to see him. I frowned, and followed Hagrid and the rest of the crowd until we got to the front door. Hagrid knocked and a very stern looking witch in emerald green robes opened the door. “Good evening Professor McGonagall! I got the firs’ years!” Said Hagrid happily “Thank you Hagrid, I’ll take it from here.” Said Professor McGonagall “Come on, follow me.”

She said to us and we followed her into a small chamber. We stood closer together than we would have liked but dealt with it. “Welcome to Hogwarts, The start of the term banquet will begin shortly but first you must be sorted into your houses. The people in your house will be much like your family, your triumphs will gain your house points and rule-breaking will lose your house points. There are 4 houses Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Now you’ll be sorted in front of the rest of the school in a few minutes, I suggest you smarten yourselves up while you wait.” Said Professor McGonagall

Jasmine brushed a bit of hair from her eyes and when she did this her sleeve flew up slowing long white scars racing over her skin, crossing each other it looked horrible. Jasmine quickly saw what I was staring at and pulled down her sleeve. “Pretend you never saw that.” She whispered and I put it to the side of my mind and began to mess with the bit of hair that kept falling in my eyes. I glared at it, man I really should just cut it off! I kept trying to tuck it behind my ear but it was too short. I glared at it again, I sighed my hair having won this battle I left it alone.

Alex did the exact opposite of what I did and pulled her hair over her left eye. It looked rather stunning on her. Then McGonagall came back and led us out. We formed a single line and walked to where she led us. Which was out in front of the entire school…. And all the teachers. I felt the color drain from my face.

I heard Alex curse under her breath behind me and Cat seemed to shrink, Jasmine seemed absolutely fine and undeterred and unworried about the many eyes on her, in fact she just ignored them.

I looked out from the line and saw a dusty old hat and a stool. It sang some long song about quick witted Ravenclaws, Loyal Hufflepuffs, Ambitious Slytherins and Brave Gryffindors. But I didn’t feel brave or quick witted at the moment. At the moment I felt nervous and frightened, and a little homesick. Okay a lot homesick.

I was used to not being alone and in empty vacant places, I was not used to being in a room full of people gawking at you. I moved my gaze to the ceiling which was a dark blue dotted with white shimmering stars. Candles floated towards the ceiling and I sighed remembering that this would be over quick.

“Abbott, Hannah.” Said Professor McGonagall and she walked over looking as pale as a ghost and sat down on the stool where she put on the hat. The whole place was silent. “HUFFLEPUFF!” roared the “Sorting hat” and the sorting had begun.

I paid no attention to anyone being sorted; instead I focused on staying calm and quiet. Another reason was because none of my friends were being sorted. I took deep breaths and waited as McGonagall went through the Ps. Then it came “Potter, Emily.” I stepped out from the line and walked as normally as I possibly could. And the last thing I saw as the hat fell over my eyes was what seemed to be hundreds of people staring at me in curiosity and confusion.

“GRYFFINDOR!” Roared the hat in about a second. “Thank you.” I whispered to the hat and set it down racing away to the Gryffindor table like a scared cat. “Nice to see you Emily!” Said the Weasley Twins from not too far from me.

“Potter, Harry.” And I saw my brother step out of the line. For half a second his eyes met mine but no longer. It took the hat at least 2 minutes to decide where to put my brother, I Crossed my fingers under the table “GRYFFINDOR!” The Sorting Hat cried and Harry scuttled off to the seat in front of me.

Catherine and Jasmine both got in Gryffindor rather quick, While Alex went to Slytherin. I sighed, I could still be friends with her but it would be harder. Septimus Night also went to Slytherin, I noticed he had fangs, and was rather pale. I think he’s a vampire. Ron Weasley (The younger brother of Fred and George) got into Gryffindor too, and took the empty seat beside Harry.

Jasmine had sat down beside me shortly before Ron had come to the Gryffindor table, her last name was Warlord. I smiled Cat was sat on my other side. No one asked about my last name but I knew they were curious. Then again who wouldn’t be. I knew for sure that Harry was dying to know, he kept giving me glances all through Dumbledore’s speech.

At the end of Dumbledore’s Speech everyone clapped and food magically appeared all over the table. I took a little of everything and dug in. It tasted great, people started talking and sharing stories. Some of them were rather hilarious. I didn’t really have any stories so I just listened. (Ron once laughed so hard pumpkin juice came out his nose.)

At the end of the banquet thing everyone was tired, it was rather late. So sleep seemed like the best move. I decided to write my letter to Lupin tomorrow. Maybe then something even more exciting would happen. All the students stumbled along after Percy Weasley (A bit of a stuck up Prefect) and walked through a Portrait of a Fat Lady and into our common room and up the stairs to the dorms.

First year girls walked into our dorm, plopped down on a bed and fell asleep. Well Jasmine did this, same as Cat. But me and most girls changed into their night wear and went to bed. I couldn’t sleep even though I was exhausted! I was way to excited. So I waited... and waited, and finally I entered the world of sleep.
