10. Chapter 10 Just A Dream

Baby why’d you leave me, why’d you have to go I was counting on forever, now I’ll never know.

Three days later, we had the funeral all planned. The girls were going to be here in two days; and I was glad, needing something to take my mind off of everything. I was ready and waiting for Harry to get to the house so we could go. My mom was still getting ready. I was wearing this: I was about to go upstairs to see what was taking my mom so long when the doorbell rang. “Rebekah, I’m almost finished, can you get that?” My mom called.

“Ya!” I called back. I knew it was Harry, so I just opened the door. I was immediately pulled into a hug.

“Hey Beka.” Harry said, kissing the top of my head.

“Hey.” I said, sighing and hugging him back.

“Are you ready?” He asked after we pulled away.

“I am, but my mom’s not.”

“I am now.” My mom said, coming down the stairs as if on cue. “You two ready to go?”

“Ya, let’s go.” I said. Harry grabbed my hand and entwined our fingers. The whole ride there, he held my hand, giving it reassuring squeeze every now and then. The car ride was silent. We were going straight to the cemetery; we weren’t going to have a wake. When we got there, we parked, and walked to where my father would be buried six feet under in less than an hour. We weren’t going to have many people there, just a few of my dad’s army friends and a few family members that flew in for the day.  We sat in the front row, Harry still holding my hand. My mother and I were handed one white rose each, to place on my dad’s casket at the end of the service. The service went by in a blur to me. It’s like I’m looking from a distance standing in the background. I was brought out of my trance by guns firing. And the guns rang one last shot, and it felt like a bullet in her heart.  I felt a lump form in my throat, but I didn’t cry. I couldn’t. I can’t even breath. I had cried so much these past few days, I felt like I didn’t have any tears left. The army-men that were standing by the casket started to fold the flag that was resting on my dad’s casket. When they finished, they handed it to my mother, and she held it close to her chest. And they handed her a folded up flag, and she held on to all she had left of him. When the service came to an end, my mother and I stood up and walked to the casket. My mom placed her rose on first, and then I did. “Bye dad.” I whispered, a tear slipping down my face. I went turned to go back and saw Harry hugging my mom, as she shook with sobs. He looked at me, and I walked over to them. As soon as I placed my hand on my mom’s shoulder, she turned around and pulled me into a hug, crying into my shoulder. That’s when I broke. I cried too and Harry pulled us both into his arms, rubbing our backs as we cried. This is just a dream.

“Let’s get you two home, yeah?” Harry asked after we had calmed down.

I nodded. We walked back to the car and went home. After we got there, my mom went inside, leaving Harry and I outside, by the car. “Umm, thanks for going with me. It meant a lot to me.”

“Of course, is there anything else I can do?” Before I could answer Harry’s phone went off. He pulled it out of his pocket, looked at the screen and answered it. “Hey Lou. What’s up?” “Right now?” “It can’t wait?” “Alright, fine, I’ll be there in…” He looked down at his watch, “Twenty minutes, give or take.” “Okay, bye Lou.” He hung up. “Umm, Simon just called us for a meeting, I’m really sorry.”

“No, don’t be, it’s fine. Go, we’ll talk later.” I smiled at him.

“Okay. Our meetings usually only last an hour or so, so I should be back at about…” He looked at his watch again. “2:30. We can get together then?”

“Sounds good. Now go before you’re late.”

“Alright, I’m going. Bye, love.” He gave me a quick peck on the lips and jogged to his car. He waved at me and then got in and drove off. I walked inside and went to my room to change. I changed into this: I went downstairs and saw my mom in the kitchen making lunch. She was chopping lettuce, and she had chicken set aside on a pan, so I assumed we were going to have chicken salad.

“Hey mom.” I said.

“Hi sweetie, what’s up?” She asked setting her knife down and turning towards me.

“Where’s Harry? I thought he was coming in.”

“He had a meeting with Simon and the boys, but he’s coming over at 2:30.”

“Okay, wanna help me make lunch?”

“Ya, you want me to chop the rest of the salad stuff so you can get the chicken ready?”

“Sounds good.” She smiled. I went over to the cutting board while she started with the chicken. We cooked in silence, not really needing or knowing what to say.
