21. Empty

I rushed Emma to the emergency room as fast as I could, brushing back her hair as she cried, worried sick about the baby.  “There’s something wrong Ed, I knew there was something wrong,” she sobbed.  I kissed her forehead, rocking her slightly as we waited for the doctor to come in.  I looked down at my hands, which were intwined around her small delicate fingers that were shaking slightly.  The doctor came in moments later, smiling as if there was nothing to worry about.  “So what seems to be the problem?” he asked, pulling up a chair and sitting at the end of the bed.  Emma sat up, “I think there’s something wrong with the baby,” she started, her voice shaky. He nodded, a serious look appearing in his eyes, “Just lift up your shirt darling,” he instructed, grabbing the doppler device and turning it on.  He put the device to her stomach expecting to hear a slight hum of a heartbeat but there was only silence.  The doctor’s smile faded slowly as he took the device off of her stomach and placed it down on the counter.  I looked to Emma, her face turning ashy and blank.  “Is this your husband?” the doctor asked, breaking the silence as he grabbed another device, the screen lighting up as he grabbed a tube of green gel.  I shook my head, “No....the godfather.  Harry should be here momentarily,” I explained.  The doctor nodded and spread the gel on her stomach and moving the ultrasound device over her stomach.  The doctor sighed, his head hanging low and pausing it on the photo of the small child that was unmoving in Emma’s stomach.  He looked to me after giving tissues to Emma to clean off her stomach, “Can you give us a minute and as soon as you see ‘Harry’ can you please send him in?” he asked, standing up slowly and taking off his glasses.  I nodded and looked down at Emma, who’s face was full of worry, concern and pain.  “I’ll be just outside....Love you,” I whispered, forcing a smile on my face.  I walked out the door, bumping into Harry doing so.  His eyes were bloodshot, “Is she okay?  Is everything okay?” he asked.  I shook my head, tears forming in my eyes, “It doesn’t look so good mate.  You better go in,” I mumbled.  Harry bit his lip, walking around me and into the room, hugging his finace.  I sat in the waiting room, my arms crossed as I tried my hardest to get a grip.  “Ed!” came a voice from the hallway, along with heavy footsteps of more than one person.  I looked up to see the rest of One Direction, Louis, Niall, Zayn, and Liam.  I stood up, my knees a little shaky as the weight rested on my feet.  The boys stood around me, hugging me tightly as we waited for Harry to come out.  “Harry?” asked Lou as his friend stood in the door, his eyes puffy and red from crying.  Harry sobbed, walking to the boys rambling somewhat incoherently.  “She had a miscarriage...The baby....our baby,” he cried in my shoulder.  I hugged him tightly, crying as well, my heart feeling as if it was sitting in my throat.  I looked over Harry’s shoulder, watching as the boys reacted to the news as well.  Niall covered his face, not wanting to show his emotions to the rest of the boys.  Louis’s face was blank, still registering the news in his brain, and Liam hugging Zayn like I was hugging Harry and crying as well.  My mind was floating with different thoughts, thoughts of what would life be with the little girl in our lives.  Her curly, mousey brown hair billowing as Harry lifted her in his arms, or singing along with the boys as she strummed her small ukelele.  I looked through the blinds of the window leading to Emma’s room.  Her face was covered by sheets as her body shook with sadness.  The doctor closed the door then walked over to the blinds, shutting them as well, leaving us in the dark.
~~~The next morning~~~
    I jumped slightly, my nightmare waking me up from a deep, medically dosed dream.  My eye sight adjusted to the light as I looked over to Emma, who was still up, cradling her stomach, which was now empty.  She laid there silently, tears falling from her eyes, which were empty as well.  “Emma?” I called quietly across the room, careful not to wake up Ed who was wrapped in his jacked and uncomfortably propped up in the chair next to me.  “Emma babe, you need to rest,” I whispered, brushing back her hair gently.  She moved away from my touch abruptly, rolling over and pulling the covers up more.  “Go away,” she spoke darkly, her voice not the cheerful voice I always remembered.  I bowed my head, looking down at my feet, “Babe....I’m sorry....” I whispered, tears forming in my already sore eyes.  “Go away,” she spoke again, her voice cracking.  “Do you want anything to eat?” I asked as I walked around to the other side of the bed.  Emma shook her head and closed her eyes, pretending to fall asleep.  I walked out of the room and to the cafeteria, grabbing a coffee and sitting down at an empty table near the window.  “Harry?” came a small voice from behind.  I turned to see Maria, clutching on to her jacket and biting her lip.  “May I join you?” she asked, her voice raspy.  I nodded and she immediately grabbed the seat in front of me.  “Harry...I’m so sorry,” she started, taking my hand in hers and rubbing her thumb softly across my skin. I took a swig of my coffee, burning my throat as it fell into my stomach.  “How is she taking it?” she asked, her head hanging low.  I shrugged, “She hasn’t slept and she won’t eat or take the pain and sleep medication,” I scoffed, not wanting to explain the depression that Emma was sinking into.  Maria sat up, “I’m going to go visit her...And Harry...please don’t take this wrong but be the man that stays with her through this ordeal.  She needs you,” she spoke softly.  She turned and walked away and out of the cafeteria slowly, leaving me completely alone.  I bit my lip, my anger rising in the pit of my stomach as I launched my coffee across the room and standing up, knocking my chair out from under me.
