Planted evidence, family turning on you, and anybody who can help her, thinks she did it. Jamie will have to prove herself, that she is innocent. Will she succeed? or will she fail? And is there still one person who might believe her? Read the book to figure it out.

1. I can Prove it (Part 1)

I woke up to the sound of my doorbell ringing. I was the only one who heard it because I had my dad's ears. I could here the slightest chirp of a bird.   I went downstairs to open the door. When I did I saw Kilee, my 16 year old sister's best friend. She just stared at me, sighed, and said, "Hello Jamie. I'm sorry did I wake you?" "Yes, but it's fine." I said meaningly because it  was fine. I had been in the middle of a nightmere. Kilee said, "Is Chelsey already asleep? She left her bag at the Black Eyed Peas concert." I just stared at her in disbelief, but didn't say any thing. I said not sure of myself, "Um, yeah she just got home and just crashed on the couch. I had to carry her up to her room. I'll just give her bag to her in the morning. Thanks for dropping it off." After that Kilee just handed me Chelsey's bag and left in her SUV.   I just stood there in disbelief, astonished. I had won that ticket in a science contest and I asked my mom if i could go, but she said no because it was on a school night. Chelsey asked my mom if she could go with Kilee because Kilee had a ticket. Mom still said no for the same reason. Chelsey stole the ticket out of mom's cabnit! I was going to get her for this. And the best part is, I already have proof she did it.   My name is Jamie Carrie Carson. I am 13 and 3 quarters years old. I live with my Sister Chelsey, my mom Carla, My Aunt Caroline, my uncle Connor, my grandmother Camille, my brother Calvin, and last but least my step dad Harry.   I was always my daddy's girl so when my mom said my dad had been in a car accident and passed away, I was devastated! I didn't come out of my room for 3 months. My sister had to slide my breakfast, lunch, and dinner through the bottom crack of my door. I finally came out of my room in September just in time to realize that we were moving. I always knew that my mom was lying about how my dad died.   As you probably could see by my family's first names, my moms side always has to name thier children with C as the first letter of their name. When I was born my dad finally convinced my mom to name me Jamie instead of Coree. My dad hated that name and said Carrie is a better  middle name. My brother is 30 and living in our basement. My aunt and uncle were evicted from there home because they didn't pay their taxes. My grandmother has had a stroke and can't live alone anymore.   My mother got married to Harry a few months ago. They had been publicly dating for about a year and dad had died a year and a half ago. But I knew that my mom had really been dating harry for about 2 years. Yes, my mother was cheating on my father and I never even got the chance to tell my own dad.   After I took Chelsey's bag up to my room, I went back to bed. I slept until 6:30 when my alarm clock went off. I grabbed Chelsey's bag and ran outside to her car just in time to catch her before she drove off to Halland High school. She saw me but kept driving. Then I held out her bag and she stopped so fast, that I could see her tire marks on the street. She rolled down her window and I said, "Kilee dropped this off last night. She was suprised you were asleep. She said that you had just gotten home."  "She must have been confused. I didn't go out last night." "Oh save it!" I said immediately. "Look, I know you're mad but I deserve that ticket!" "Why? I earned it. You have never even got above a C in science! Why should you get it?" I said, pleased with my fast thinking.  "Because! I'm older then you and I deserve to go to a concert with my friends!" She said trying to match up with my  greatness.  "Oh, whatever!" I yelled. "Why don't you start working for rewards instead of taking other people's credit for a change!" "Just give me my bag!" I handed her the bag and she drove off.    I went back into the house and got ready for school. I usually ride my bike to school, but it was at the shop getting fixed because the breaks don't work. My mom told Connor last night that he had to drive me to school. "I was hoping he'd be up by now," I said to myself worried. Connor is so cranky in the morning so it is bad news if you try to wake him up. "I have to wake him up or else I will be late again and have detention!" I said nearly crying but didn't.   I walked downstairs as quite as I could. I went over to Connor's water bed and shook him. He finally woke up. He pushed me down and yelled, "What are you doing in my room!?" "It's not your room; it's the basement!" I said half crying, half yelling. "Mom told you that you had to drive me to school today!" "Why can't you drive!?" He said half asleep. "I'm only 13! Dumb butt!" "Don't call a grown man Dumb but!" He said looking angry. "You're living at your mother's house at age 30! Do most grown men do that?" I said sounding snooty. He Ugged and said annoyed, "Get in the dang car." I smiled and went upstairs followed by Connor. We got in his dump that he calls a car and drove to school.   Once we were at school he stopped the car just in time for me to jump out. He drove away in about 10 seconds. Everybody stared at me. I just ignored them and went to the cafeteria for breakfast. I ate a bowl of cereal and some toast.   This annoying girl Halley came and sat next to me. "Hey step kid!" She said snooty."Did your dad come back?" I ignored her."Oh wait he never will. Will he? Maybe he'll come back as a zombie! I wouldn't be suprised if he did. Considering how you're already are one." "What are you talking about?" I said angrily. She said back, "I just mean your face. It looks like a zombie. Hey your dad must have been a real jerk because he left without anyone knowing." I said quickly, "It wasn't his fault!" Then I pushed her a little out of her chair. One of her friends came up behind me and pushed me forward so I fell on top of Halley! It looked like I was tackling her! I was in the wrong place at the wrong time because the principal happened to be walking right past us while it was happening! He only saw me on top of Halley not her friend pushing me. He took one look at me and brought me to his office. He started angry and said, "This kind of thing shall not be tolerated at this school! Physically  hurting another student? What has gotten into you Jamie?" "I didn't attack her." I said annoyed. "Then why were you on top of her while she was screaming?" " "Because her friend pushed me on top of her just to get me back!" I said almost screaming. "Well, why did she need to get back at you?" "Because I had pushed her because she was talking about my dead father!" I said actually screaming. I was able to hold back tears. "So you admit that you did hurt her yourself?" "Yes, I did okay!" I said still screaming. "Only because she was making fun of my dead father!" I said crying because I couldn't hold back the tears any longer.  "Oh, Jamie, I know this is hard for you. Having a new step dad is hard. You're just a little depressed and don't know how to deal with this stuff." He said thoughtfully, but that was still not it so I got annoyed. "I'm not depressed!" I said no longer crying. "This has nothing to do with Harry!" "Calm down Jamie. This is hard for everyone." He said  "Uh! NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ANYTHING I SAY! You just don't get it!" I said crying again. Then I stormed out. This was going to be a long day.   After I stormed out I went straight to the bathrooms. I grabbed some paper towels and went to the mirror to stop the redness in my eyes. I started to make it look like I hadn't been crying but started to cry again. "Why did he have to leave us?" I said aloud to myself. "Because of him, my life is so much harder. I can't handle all this!" I put my head to the sink counter and started bawling.    Since I had missed my last class my teacher was looking all around the school for me. She finally found me at around 12:40 still crying in the bathroom. She came over to me and said, "Jamie, sweetie what happened?" She tried to put her hand on my shoulder but I pushed it away. She was always my favorite teacher. She had a way of making me feel good. She asked thoughtfully, "Does it have something to do with your step father?" I got a little annoyed but held it together and said, "Why does everyone assume that? Whenever I feel bad people ask me that. Just because I have a step dad doesn't mean that I don't have other problems too." She started saying something about Fairy tales when I heard my name on the intercom. "Would Jamie Carson please report to the main office, now". I pulled it together and went down to the office. I found my mom and Harry crying in the chairs in the office. My mom came up to me and hugged me. "What happened?" I said worried. My mom had never looked this sad. "Jamie. Chelsey is..." "She's. She's like your father." Said my mom with a crack in her voice. I said scared, "What do you mean she is like dad?" "I mean she's dead!" She said as she started to bawl into her tissue. I just stood there frozen, then I fell and blacked out.   I woke up in the hospital with my mom, my brother, my aunt and uncle, my Grandmother, and Harry over me. I asked my mom how long I had been out. "About 2 days." She said with sadness still in her voice. I said to mom, "I'm hungry."  "There's some food on the table." She said without looking.  "Mom." I said with curiosity in my voice. "If you don't mind me asking. How did Chelsey die?"  "The detectives are still trying to figure it out." She said about to cry. "They are pretty sure it was poison." "Murder?" I said sounding astonished. "It's not for sure, but yes, that's what they're getting at." "How did the poison get to her?" I said still suprised. "Well, they interviewed all of the people who had made contact with her before she passed. All of her friends said that she was drinking a can of Pepsi soda when she collapsed to the ground. Her friends also said something like 'she was fine when we were with her. Than she pulled out a Pepsi and started to drink it. Soon she was asking questions like is it getting hot in here? And then she started breathing heavily. Then she screamed 'I can't breathe!' And collapsed to the floor'. The detectives are going to interview the family tomorrow. Chelsey also said before she went that she-" "Okay stop!" I screamed nervously. "Please just stop I can't take it any more!" Just then the nurse came in and said, "Jamie, Is everything okay?" I said yes and the doctor told all of my family to leave the room. "Eat your food, Jamie" I heard mom call to me as she was leaving the room. The nurse sat down on my hospital bed and checked my pulse. She said, "Alright everything seems to be working fine. We'll keep you for a few more hours for safety reasons. Do you want a-" "Do you know anything about Chelsey Carson?" I said like I had tuned out on what she had said.  "As a matter of fact I do!" "Were you her nurse?" "Actually, no. One of my friends was." "Do you know anything about what happened today?" "Yes. Do you want to hear about her?" "Yes" I said with a crackle in my voice. "She was my sister."  "That's right. Well, what do you know so far?" "That she was drinking a Pepsi and she started to ask weird questions. Then she said that she couldn't breathe, and fell to the floor." "So you know quite a lot."  "Was the Pepsi poison?" "Yes. Her digestive system was all messed up and the circulation to her heart was cut off. No known poison can do that. Whoever did it had to have made it themselves and be a master at science."    After she left and a few hours went by, the doctor said it would be fine to leave. My parents came in to my hospital room in about 25 minutes. They had gone out to eat because they hate any kind of cafeteria food. I don't understand them, I love it. But my family did get me a double fudge choco shake, and that was yummy. I finished my milkshake, they grabbed their coats, signed me out, and went out the door to the car and we drove away.     Once we were at home I went straight up to my room, sat on my bed, and thought. I thought about how 2 of my family members had died within one and a half years. I just sat there in silence then started to cry. I lay down on my bed and started to pray. I had never really done that before. I had only seen people do it. I prayed for the rest of my family, hoping that they wouldn't die along with my sister and my father. I put my head on pillow and fell asleep.   I was woken up by the shaking and yelling of my mother. She was saying, "Jamie wake up! The detective is here to interview us about Chelsey." "What?" I said still groggy from my nap. "Come on, it's your turn to be interviewed!" "We're going separately?" I said completely awake. "Yes!" She said with a bit of an angry tone. "You're going first!"  "Why?" I said still tired.  "Because they want to go youngest to oldest. Hurry up! The detective has an announcement!" I got out of bed and put on some fresh clothes. I went downstairs to my family. I was suprised to see everyone in the same room at one time. That was a sight I would never see again.   I sat down on the couch next to my aunt. The Detective said in a broad big voice, "Alright. This will be hard for people who are incident to hear." "What do you mean incident?" My mom broke out and asked scared. The Detective spoke again. "I mean it was one of you who did it!" Every gasped, even me. I couldn't believe one of my family members had killed Chelsey! The Detective pointed to me and motioned me to go in the kitchen. I followed him in and an assistant shut the door behind me. He said, "Hello Jamie." I waved sarcastically. "I know this must be hard for you. Having two family members die within a year and a half. I don't know what is going on here in this family. So what kind of relationship did you have with Chelsey?" "Well, it wasn't really much" I said."She was just kind of my older sister down the hall. Whenever we talked it was something either stupid or mean. We never really liked each other. I mean, she was always taking credit for everything I did. She even took my Black Eyed Pea's ticket that I won in a science competition. I know that she used it because her BFF Kilee came to give me her bag. Kilee said she left it there. Other than that, I never really had anything to do with her." he looked at me in a weird way and said, "Do you swear to The Lord above, that you will not lie, in this situation?" "Of course!" I said scared "I would never lie. For the sake of my sister." "Did you kill her?" "No!" I said crying. "I would never kill one of my family!" I couldn't even speak correctly. "It would make perfect sense. You would have a good cover up. You're young, and no one would expect a child to commit a murder." "I DIDN'T DO IT!" I screamed. I started crying again and my mother tried to  come in but the doors were locked. She banged and damanded for the detective to let her in. I ran to the door to let my mother in. I ran into her arms crying. She looked at the detective and said scared, "What have you done to my daughter? She's just a kid; you can't ask her the same questions you would to an adult!" "She's 14; she can handle it!"  "Leave! Now! You can do the rest of the interviews tomorrow." Said my mom a little scared. The detective grabbed his brief case and went out the back door. I just dug my face into my mother's dress crying. She brought me to the couch and layed me down to sleep.    I woke up in my room to the sound of the door knocking. I guessed that my brother had carried me to my room. I said come in and my brother walked in with a plate of cookies. He went over to my bed and sat down. "You know I'm not in a hospital sick with a bunch of sweets sent to me by family and friends. I'm just a little shaken up from the interview" I said softly. "I know" he said nicely. "Mom made me bring them to you." "So you were forced to do this?" I said laying back down.  "Well, no. Well, yes but I wanted to bring them" he said finally puting the cookies down. "I wanted to talk to you." "Why? I'm fine." "I know" he said quickly. "But I'm not. Look, we're the only two kids left in this family. I mean I'm not exactly a kid but, I'm the closest there is to a kid other than you. I'm honestly scared that someone else in this family will die. Especially because there's a killer in this house." Conor's eyes started to water. I went and sat next to him and gave him a hug. I was really suprised at Connor's reaction. I think that was the first time I had ever seen him cry! I felt terrible and in some ways he made me feel worse. But he also made me feel better. I asked him to leave because I needed to sleep. He just looked at me and said In a quivering voice, "If you want to sleep, can you sleep in a sleeping bag in the basement with me?" I had to think about that one for a while. What if he was the killer? He couldn't be. He barely even talked to Chelsey or dad. I finally said, "Sure. Will you help me carry my stuff down?" He smiled, noded yes and grabbed my stuff. I followed him down to the basement and he set up. I layed down in my "bed" and fell asleep a little scared.     I woke up to the sound of our breakfast bell ringing. I got up, went upstairs to my room, put on some fresh clothes, and went back downstairs for breakfast. My mom had fixed my favorite. Blueberry pancakes, sausage, And turkey bacon, with extra butter and sirup. Yum yum yum! I gobbled the food down pretty fast. It was great! I was so happy and then I realized they were only making me breakfast because of the interviews. The interviews! They're today! This is not good! I'm still spooked! I cannot go through with this! And yet at that moment I hear the knock on the door.         My mom looked straight at me, and I knew what she meant. I noded yes and she went to the door. She opened the door and made a beckoning motion for the detective to come in. My mom didn't smile, move out of the way, or even talk to the detective. I could tell she was scared too. The detective walked into the middle of the living room and we followed. He said that I would go last so I had some more time to recover. I was so annoyed. He pointed to Connor and they walked into the kitchen and the assistant closed the door. She looked at us and said, "I know that this is hard for you guys. This kind of thing never happens. Jamie I'm so sorry about what happened between you and Mr. Hauns". Now I knew his name. I always just called him detective. "He was just doing his job. And I promise you, he will go softer but you still have to be ready for some scary things that he might say". She gave a friendly smile and sat next to me. I smiled back nicely, but was screaming inside.          After everyone else in my family went, the detective came out and said, "Jamie. Are you okay to come in?" I nodded yes and walked with him to the kitchen. He sat down smiled at me and said, "Look, I'm sorry that I scared you yesterday. I was just doing what I needed to do." "It's fine" I said without even looking at him. "Good! That way we can go on with the interview. So tell me again what kind of relationship you had with your sister." "Well, like I said. I never really had anything to do with her. I didn't really want anything to do with her. She just gave me a sly smile whenever she walked by. She always acted like a princess. And ya it bugged me. But even though she was a snob. She was also really funny sometimes and deep down inside of me, I really wanted to hang out with her and her friends." "So you were a little jealous of her it sounds like." He said almost like he was trying to get something out of me.  "I didn't do it. Okay? Any girl my age closes their eyes even at the sight of someone dying. Let alone kill someone! And why do you think I would kill my own sister when my dad had just been killed. He was the only family I ever felt close to. I didn't do it. Okay! Why can't you just get that in your head?" "Well you certainly came back with a lot of power" he said under his breath. "Just answer he question!" I said quickly. "Your mom told me the last things that you said to Chelsey." He said staring into my eyes. "How would she know?" "Well, she heard you and Chelsey fighting through her window. She said she had an early morning meeting and had just gotten out of the shower. She heard bickering and opened her window. She didn't say anything to you guys because she wanted you to work things out together. What a big mista-" "Wait. She told you all this. So that means that she... She thinks that I did it!" I said under my breathe almost crying.  "Well, it wasn't just her. I told her about the Black Eyed Peas ticket and how you were the last one to have her bag. I know you did it. And I will find out a way to prove it was you." He stared at me. And I could see through his teeth that he was happy it was me. I couldn't figure out why. I went to the doors and tried to go to my room When my mom grabbed me by the shoulder. "How did it go pumpkin?" "You!" I yelled "What?" "He accused me again because of you!" "Jamie, what are you talking about?" She said trying to yell. But her scream was blocked out by the sound of sadness.  "You think it was me don't you!" "Jamie I would never accuse my daughter of something like that!" "Don't call me your daughter! Because your not my mother!" I went up to my room when I heard my mother yell, "Jamie Carrie Carson get back down here this minute!" I stopped on the stairs for a second. That was the first time my mom had ever used my full name. I looked at her and then went to my room. I slammed the door and locked it. I started to bawl on my bed. I tried to go to sleep but all my pillows were in the basement. And there was no way I would go passed my mother again. I just got a few stuffed animals and layed on them. "I hate my life" then the door nob turned.       I forgot that my mom had the key to my door. She walked in and sat next to me on my bed. I just sighed and said, "Go away!"  "What happened back there?" She said with anger still in her voice "Don't act like you don't know!" "I'm not acting. I really don't know!"  "You told the detective that I had a fight with Chelsey right before she died! And he also told you that I had Chelsey's bag last. You think that I did it! Just admit it!" After I said that, my mom just turned to the door an left. After that I never looked at my mom the same way again. Because I knew she left because she didn't want to answer the question. She left because she was disappointed. She left because she thought that I was a murderer. I laid down on my bed and cryed myself to sleep. I was so cold because I had no blanket. I dreamed about my dad. I dreamed that he was still alive. That even though everyone thinks I'm a murderer, he would say, "I don't believe what they say. I know my little girl and I know that you wouldn't even think abou killing Chelsey. Or me!"  "What!" I screamed. "You killed me yourself you just don't remember!!!" "Dad stop it!" This dream soon became a nightmare.  "Your mom and I were fighting. You were in the room and you didn't like it when we fought! You had just woken up so you were still half asleep. You walked into my gun safe and pulled out a pistol! The safe was open because I just came back from hunting when I started yelling at your mom. I should've locked the safe!!! You took the gun out and you shot the bullet! After that you fainted. I watched your mother tell you a lie about how I died. And you believed her!" "What are you saying?!?!" I said screaming. My face was drenched with water.  "I'm saying that I lied when I said I loved you!" Then I woke up drenched with sweat, screaming. I looked at my clock and saw that it was three In the morning. I went to the basement and lied down in my sleeping bag. I looked at my sleeping brother and could see my dad in him. I stood up and walked over to my brother. I made a fist and put it above his head. I was about to punch him when I realized he wasn't my dad. I brought my fist down and went to bed.       I was awakened by the shaking of my brother. Once I opened my eyes he said, "Look, I know your still a little shaken up but it is a school day. You don't have to go if you don't want to. I only did this because-" "Are you kidding?" "Well I-" "Ovcorse I want to go to school anything to leave this house". "You sure because I'm not forcing you to do this you know that right?" "Connor, I've never been more happy to hear the words go to school, in my life! Now let me just go to my room and put on some new clothes". "Alright Jamie. I'll go start the car. Do you want me to put to put the air on?" "It's October".  "I know but your still drenched in sweat from when you came down here last night".  "Wait. You were awake?"  "Jamie, I never went to bed" he said with a chuckle. "But I saw you sleeping!" "Oh the manakin?" "You have a manikin?" "Yah!" "Well, if you weren't in the basement then how did you see me come down?"  "I was in the office playing Happy Wheels. You went right passed me you just didn't see me. Plus I didn't have to see you to find the path of sweat you left from the top floor all the way down to the basement" he said with another chuckle. "I'm going to go take a shower." I said a little embarrassed. "Wait," he said wit ha jump. "What?" "You didn't answer my question!" "Oh, turn on the air" and with that I went upstairs to take a shower.      Once I got dressed and went downstairs, I noticed that my brother's car was gone. I walked all around my street looking for his car. It wasn't there. I ran inside, grabbed the home phone, and called my brother. he picked up after about five rings. he said his usual pun and acted like it was no big deal that he left. "Where are you?" I yelled. "At the store. Why?" "Why? Because you didn't tell me where you were you just left me!" "Look I just left for a few minutes. I thought that you would still be in the shower by the time I got home. look everything is okay. I promise you it won't happen again." "Alright. Just please get home soon."  "I just pulled in the garage. come on out you can eat your breakfast in the car and at school." "Alright, I'm coming." and then I hung up the phone and went out to the car. I got in the car and Connor handed me a        jelly filled doughnut with white icing and sprinkles. He also got me an egg salad sandwich with extra cheese. He smilled at me and we drove off.
