Chapter 24 ~ Parker

After Amabel left I just lay down on the couch and stared at the ceiling. I don’t know how long I lay like that; I just focused on a faint line on the white ceiling. My mind is racing of thoughts of Amabel’s past. Even though she didn’t share much with me I still feel the need to know more. The last person I expected to have an ugly past was her. She seemed so composed and upright. Unlike me. I’m a complete shit mess. She said that Harry had been helping her deal with her pain. I wish I had someone like that.

When I finally do look at the clock, it’s five minutes to eight. What have I been doing all day? I shrug to myself. I get up and get a glass of water and bring it back to the couch. As I take a sip the sound of rattling keys makes my head snap towards the door. Liam was here!

I sprinted down the hall, to my room, onto the bed and pulled the blanket over myself and became completely still. I wasn’t up for an awkward hello tonight, or ever, maybe. I heard his footsteps come inside, and then disappear down the hall. Once I heard his door close I relaxed and breathed a sigh of relief.

The next morning, I listen to my grumbling stomach and immediately start breakfast. I’m in a good mood today, for some unknown reason, and switch on the radio. I bounce to the beat of an unfamiliar song and whisk together my eggs, preparing to scramble them.

A string of knocks on the door breaks me from my trance. I pad over and look through the peep hole, only to see a blonde head of hair. I open the door.

“Hey Niall,” I smile slightly. His eyes are puffy and red, and he has dark bags under them.

“Is Liam here?” He asked.

“I don’t know, I haven’t seen him this morning. What’s wrong?”

He sniffled and I opened the door wider so he could come in. “Tell me.”

“It’s…it’s Sam.” He choked out and wiped his face with both hands. I was genuinely concerned.

“What about her?” I soothed, rubbing his back.

“She…she broke up with me.” He sobbed, and I held him against me. I had never seen him cry in person. Of course, I hadn’t known him for very long, but I was a big fan of One Direction, and I had never seen him cry like this.

“Did you want to talk about it?” I asked softly as he cried into my shirt. He nodded.

He lifted his head and looked at me with watery blue eyes. How could Sam break up with him? I didn’t know her or her motives but he looked absolutely crushed. “She said…th-that all this time apart wasn’t good for us, and things weren’t the same anymore.”

“Do you feel the same way?” I asked.

Niall shook his head no. “I thought things were great. This was totally unexpected. I love her so much, Parker.”

My chest ached for the blonde. “I’m so sorry, Niall.” I brought him into my arms again. “Can I ask…how did you two meet?” I wanted to get his mind off the pain and focus on something else. He loves her, and I want him to remember the good times they had.

"Amabel introduced us. We were all at Harry’s house. Am and Sam came over and when I met Sam, I thought she was so beautiful.” He said, more to himself than to me.

“That’s wonderful.” I said. “What else?”

“We wanted to watch a movie. Marley & Me. Sam didn’t want to ‘cause she said it makes her cry every time she watches it.” He laughed a little, and I smiled. “When I asked her out, and she said yes, I thought, wow. This is the girl for me.” His eyes got teary again.

I hugged him tighter. I didn’t like her from the get-go when she thought Niall was cheating on her with me, and now I dislike her even less. It seemed that instead of trying to work things out and fight for her relationship, she bailed on one of the sweetest guys I had ever met. She was missing out. Niall was cute, silly and had the biggest sense of humor I had ever seen on anyone before.

“I’m sorry, Niall. I’m sorry.” I cooed. To distract him, I flipped on the TV so we could watch whatever was on. I found Friends and Niall told me to leave it there.

“I like this show.” He said.

“I like it, too.” I agreed and wrapped a blanket around us.

“Where you looking for Liam?” I asked out of the blue. I found it hard to believe that he came looking for me instead of his best friend.

“Yeah,” he said sheepishly. “But you’re here, and that’s okay too.” He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

“I’m glad you came over.” I admitted, and turned to the TV again. “Are you hungry?”

Niall crinkled his nose. “Not really. I don’t feel like eating.”

My eyes widened. “Niall Horan doesn’t want food?” I teased. He stifled a laugh. “We must call the authorities! This day much be remembered!”

Niall gave me another smile, and I was glad to be cheering him up a bit. I think I needed it to, and hanging out with Niall came so easily. My eggs were cold but I wasn’t interested in them anymore. I cleaned the dishes and made myself a sandwich. When I plopped down next to Niall, he stole a bite.

“Hey! I thought you said you weren’t hungry!” I scolded.

He shrugged. “I changed my mind.”

I rolled my eyes and handed him the sandwich. “Whatever.” There was a Friends marathon on this morning and I was really glad. It was my favorite show ever. “Does Jennifer Anniston not age?” I wondered out loud. Niall shrugged. She looks the same now as she did in1994. We were watching of the first seasons and it was crazy how great she looks now.

“YOU GUYS WERE ON A BREAK!” I screamed at Jennifer Anniston’s character, Rachel. How could she blame Ross for that? She was the one who broke things off. She was the one who wanted some time apart.

“It’s just a show, Parker.” Niall teased with a smile on his lips.

I scowled. “But Rachel is completely out line! It’s all her fault!”

Niall scoffed. “You’re too into this.”

“Whatever.” I replied and slouched down.

“So…how’re things with Liam?” Niall asked me, looking over from the corner of his eye.

“Fine,” I answered shortly.

Niall raised an eyebrow. “He was pretty distracted at the interview yesterday. Hardly paid attention.”

My eyes grew wide. “What?”

“He was pretty focused on somethin’, and it wasn’t the interview. Did you tell him…”

I played with my fingers. “I told him the story of my parents… and that whole thing.”

"Did you want to…?” He asked cautiously.

“No.” I said. Retelling it wasn’t something I wanted to do anytime soon.

Niall nodded. I was so glad he was here. His witty personality—despite was he was going through—was really cheering me up and taking my mind off everything.

“I’m glad I’m here.” The blonde told me, giving me a grin.

I smiled back. “I’m glad you’re here, too. I needed someone to talk to.”

“What about Amabel?” He asked.

"She stops by too. But someone else, someone who I don’t talk to that often. You’re easy to talk to.” I admitted, blushing a bit.

“So are you. You’re different from any of my friends.”

“Yeah,” he said. “Friends. We’re friends, aren’t we?”

I nodded. Did Niall Horan just ask if we were friends? Oh my God.

“What?” He asked at my wide smile.

“Nothing. I just can’t believe I can say I’m friends with Niall Horan.” When I said that, he burst out laughing. His laugh was contagious, I couldn’t help but smile. He made me smile wider than anyone has. A little voice in the back of my head remind me of Liam, but I ignore it.

Besides Garrett, but I refuse to go down that road.
