Just Friends

"So," I smiled as I sat at the cafeteria table, in front of the new kid, Niall. I set my tray of food on the table. "have you made any friends yet?" He nodded. "That's good." I said picking up my apple and taking a bite out of it.
"What's his name?" I continued the conversation.
"He's coming to eat with us." He said, "You'll see."
I frowned confused, okay...
"Oh! There he is!" Niall said gesturing to a guy coming towards us. I turned around but as soon as I saw who it was I flashed my head back towards Niall.
"You're kidding me right?" I one hand on my forehead staring at the table. "Niall, you can't be friends with him he's-"
I was cut off by the guy sitting beside me on the bench of the table. "trouble." I finished under my breath as he and Niall did some kind of handshake.
"Hey there Brooke, haven't seen you in awhile." He winked at me.
"Hello Zayn..." I said coldly as I inched away from him on the bench.

26. (23) Roadtrip

A week and a half later.

My sportsbag and sleeping bag were piled by my bedroom door as I made sure I had everything. Niall was bringing the tents. Okay. I was just bringing my clothes and some snacks. Kaylee was bringing some snacks and who the hell cares about Zayn. I heard a honk outside indicating Niall was here. I slung my bag over my shoulder and grabbed my sleeping bag in my hand by the safety cord. It was really early in the morning and my parents already knew where I was going but I decided to scribble down a quick goodbye note and fold it onto the counter. I looked back once more, just glancing around the house and let out a sigh. I’m not too sure how I feel about this camping trip…

Kaylee was sat in the backseat and Niall was in the front, driving, along with Zayn. I walked around the car and popped open the boot to put my things in. I slid back towards the front of the car and opened up the door to crawl into my seat. A chorus of “Hi”s and “Hey”s were mumbled. I didn’t really say much due to the time of day but my face cracked into a smile when I saw the bundle of blankets and cushions Kaylee set up for me and her. Perfect. We drove off as I was getting myself comfortable. I didn’t really mind if the ride was long or not, because the longer it was, the more time I had before the real camping begun. After about twenty minutes, Kaylee had fallen asleep and Niall was concentrating on the road which left an awkward tension between me and Zayn. I popped my earbuds in my ears and lay my head against the cool window. My eyes followed the blurry lines of the landscape flowing by. My eyes started to droop after a while and I finally gave into sleep. Who knows how long later my eyes opened and I noticed that we were in a parking lot. …And Kaylee and Niall were gone. I frowned and took out my earbuds. “Why are we here?” I asked aloud. Zayn didn’t answer. I lightly kicked the back of his seat and heard him grumble.

“What the hell Brooke?” He sneered.

“Why are we here?” I repeated.

“Kaylee went to the washroom and we needed gas.”

He looked back outside. A few minutes later Niall and Kaylee came back. Niall opened up the driver door but only reached his head in. “Zayn?” He turned his attention towards him. “Would you care to drive? I’ve been driving a while and I’m a little tired.” Zayn nodded and got out of the car and walked over to the opposite side. Kaylee slid into her initial place and as I was expecting Niall to go back to his, my door opened. “Um?”

“Can you sit in the front? Please?

I pouted and gave him a please don’t do this look. “I want to stretch out and I can’t.” He egged on. I rolled my eyes back and sighed. “Fine.” I grumbled, getting out of the car and slipping into the passenger side, beside Zayn. I plucked my phone off my lap and unlocked it, just scrolling through everything and anything to look busy. A couple hours later, both Niall and Kaylee had fallen asleep, surely, after being motionless for quite a while. I peered outside, watching the blurred objects go by. There wasn’t much to look at anyways, considering we were surrounded by empty fields.  I felt Zayn’s eyes flicker towards me for a second. I turned slightly, so I was now facing the front of the road and I could see the oh-so-lovely driver from the corner of my eye. Maybe I imagined it. I waited a little before his eyes flickered to me again. This time his mouth opened a little as well but closed without a sound. As if he wanted to say something. “What?” I taunted, annoyed.

His eyes flickered back to me one last time, a frown covering his face before he focused his attention back onto the road. His jaw clenched. “Nothing.”

“What did you mean when you said that two could play at this game?” I blurted out.

I looked back out the window. I wasn’t expecting an answer anyways.

“Why does what happened in the past affect you so much?” So I was wrong.
