Just Friends

"So," I smiled as I sat at the cafeteria table, in front of the new kid, Niall. I set my tray of food on the table. "have you made any friends yet?" He nodded. "That's good." I said picking up my apple and taking a bite out of it.
"What's his name?" I continued the conversation.
"He's coming to eat with us." He said, "You'll see."
I frowned confused, okay...
"Oh! There he is!" Niall said gesturing to a guy coming towards us. I turned around but as soon as I saw who it was I flashed my head back towards Niall.
"You're kidding me right?" I one hand on my forehead staring at the table. "Niall, you can't be friends with him he's-"
I was cut off by the guy sitting beside me on the bench of the table. "trouble." I finished under my breath as he and Niall did some kind of handshake.
"Hey there Brooke, haven't seen you in awhile." He winked at me.
"Hello Zayn..." I said coldly as I inched away from him on the bench.

19. (17) Don’t Touch Me

The next day at lunch, Zayn was of course, sitting at the table with Niall. I bit the inside of my cheek as I sat down. “Hi Ni.” I smiled, he smiled in acknowledgment.

“Hello Brooke.” Zayn chimed in. I mentally rolled my eyes. I turned my head to him and gave him a sarcastic smile. “Hi.”

We ate lunch with mainly small talk between Zayn and Niall but both of them always tried to get me into the conversation even though I was trying to avoid it.

Once lunch was over we started walking out of the cafeteria.

“Brooke, I’ll meet you in class.” Niall said. “I have to go to the bathroom.” He said before turning his back to us and walking away with a last glance over his shoulder and a small wink.

Niall please don’t try to play match maker. I mentally begged. I glanced at Zayn from the corner of my eye. He had his hands in his pockets and he was walking beside me. I glared at him. Leave me alone. I wanted to scold him but instead I just held my head up higher, pursed my lips and quickened my pace.  And to my misfortune, he hurried also. “Brooke can we talk?” I stopped in track and turned to face him.

“About what?” I faked a smile.

He raised a you know what eyebrow at me. I crossed my arms starting to feel uncomfortable. He led to me to a small corner in the hallway.

I looked around nervously, wanting to be anywhere else but here. He tilted my face towards his with his index and I slapped it away. “Don’t touch me.” I warned, not letting my guards down. He raised his hands in surrender.

“Look, can it not be awkward between us?” He asked staring at me. I scoffed.

“You pulled this on yourself, Zayn.” I pointed out.

He looked down at his feet, looking suddenly ashamed. “I’m sorry.” He mumbled. I nearly choked on my breath. Did he really apologize? No, he never does.

“You didn’t look sorry a year ago.” I glared at him.

“I was a jerk I know. I was in a bad mood that day and I just wanted to blow off some steam.”

Tears shot to my eyes. “So you decided to throw away your bestfriend. Okay.” I said sarcastically as if it all made sense.

Zayn’s POV

“And I sort of had this sexual frustration against you.” I almost added but that wouldn’t have helped. It would have probably earned me a slap in the face and humiliation.

“Brooke, if I could take back that day I would.” I said genuinely sorry.

Her eyebrows were knotted together. “How come it took you so long to apologize then?”

I took a deep breath. “You know how my ego was Brooke.”

She scoffed. “Nothing’s changed.” She said shaking her head disapprovingly.

“It has, I’m not like that anymore.”

She licked her lips.

“Do you still sleep around?”

I bit the inside of my cheek and nodded. “But I can quit if you want me t-”

“Zayn you don’t have to do anything for me, after all I’m just another girl am I right?” She said and her bottom lip quivered but I knew after what I’d done she would never let herself look weak in front of me. She sucked it up and flipped her hair over her shoulder. “Anyways, I should probably get to class.” She said acting bored.

“Brooke.” I groaned grabbing her arm. Her eyes travelled from my grip on her elbow, up the length of my arm and finally to my eyes. She glared at me as if to remind me not to touch her. I let go and took a step back.

“Look I’m really, really sorry. I just want things to be how they were.” I said. So much for not looking like a loser, I’m literally begging her. I’m supposed to be the cool, bad guy.

“Sorry doesn’t cut it.” She said raising an eyebrow at me and pursing her lips. She examined her nails and let out a sigh. “I’ll see you around.” And with that she flipped around and walked down the hallway slowly fading away in the crowd.
