Chapter 35

“Louis…Louiiiis?” I called softly as I climbed the stairs that afternoon. Everyone was on the beach, and I had joined them after the talk with Liam. Louis hadn’t come downstairs all day, only leaving his room to go to the bathroom.

I carried a sandwich in my hand, bringing him lunch, since he hadn’t eaten all day. “What?” he mumbled from behind the door.

“I brought you lunch.” I said, and opened his door. At first I couldn’t see him, but then I noticed the lump under the covers. I walked over, put the sandwich on the bedside table, and poked him. He didn’t move. “Louis, we’re leaving in two days.”

That got his attention. “What?” he poked his head out. Bags rested under his eyes, which were rimmed with red from the crying that he did. I felt bad for him.

“I talked with Liam, and we’re leaving on Saturday.” I told him.

“Thanks,” he mumbled, and then disappeared from view again, pulling the covers past his head again.

“Louis Tomlinson, when was the last time you ate?”

“Not hungry.” He grumbled.

“Eat, now. You have got to take care of yourself.” I commanded, and then left the room. Behind me I heard something along the lines of “yes mom,” and then the shifted of the bed. I smiled to myself and returned to the beach.

In the blink of an eye, Saturday had come, and I was packing my bags, getting one last look at the sun shining on the water. I sighed, and jumped when there was a knock on my door.

“Sorry,” Harry grinned, and came up behind me to wrap his arms around my waist and rest his chin on my shoulder. “Afternoon, beautiful.” He pressed his lips to my cheek.

I giggled. “Afternoon, cutie,” I laughed, and wiggled out of his grip to finish zipping up my suitcase. “I don’t wanna leave,” I pouted.

“Me either, but we’ve been here for 10 days, and Louis isn’t doing so well.” He brushed a few curls away from his face. I came over and kissed him lightly, but he held the back of my neck and deepened the kiss. I just about melted into his arms as I gripped his shirt and pulled him closer to me. He moaned against my lips, and I giggled, giving him a chance to slip his tongue in my mouth.

“You guys about read-oh! Sorry!” a voice stammered, and I turned to see a very embarrassed-looking Zayn. He scratched the back of his neck, something he did when he was uncomfortable. “The car’s ready outside.” He said before leaving.

I laughed and grabbed my bag off the bed. “I’m ready.”

“Let’s go then, Harry smiled, and held out his hand. I took it, and we walked down the stairs and out the door, but not before stealing one last glance at the house.

Outside, Danielle and Sam were deep in discussion, like they always were, and Niall, Zayn, and Louis were already in the car. Louis had his head against the window. Liam was putting the bags in the trunk, and Harry and I slid in.

“Let’s go.” Harry said to the driver, and off we went.

I didn’t know why, but Sam, Liam and Danielle wanted a separate car. They had become extremely close, but I didn’t mind, it just meant a less crowded vehicle and more time with Harry.

“Can you turn on the radio please?” I asked, and the driver did. I instantly knew the song as ‘Last Kiss Goodbye’ by Hinder.

It’s calming down outside, another lonely night,

You said you were just going out with your friends.

I’m waiting up this time, I hope you didn’t lie

It never used to be like this way back when

I stole a glance at Louis, whose lips were pressed into a thin line, and I knew he was trying to hold back tears. It was a great song, but Louis was strong. Or at least he came off as strong. Inside was a boy who got his heart broken.

I never know where you’re at,

Another train off the tracks,

And I don’t wanna be like that, no.

When you walked in so damn late

What the hell was I supposed to think?

When you’ve had too much to drink

And you’re really looking guilty

When you wouldn’t even look at me,

There’s only one thing it could be

You were with him all this time

Here’s one last kiss goodbye

No more alibis, no more little lies,

You’ve broken my trust and it can’t be fixed

I should’ve seen the signs, should’ve recognized

The way your lips look like they’ve been kissed.

At this point, Louis was under a blanket again. The car was awkwardly silent, until Niall started a conversation with Liam. I wasn’t really paying attention; my eyes were drooping, and my stomach growling. I laid my head on Harry’s shoulder and drifted off within seconds.

When I woke, we were pulling into a McDonald’s. Niall had fallen asleep on Zayn’s shoulder, and Liam was ordering. My stomach growled, and Harry chuckled.

“Thank God,” I muttered, rubbing my eyes.

“We’ll be home in about an hour and a half,” Liam informed us, while typing on his iPhone. I happily ate my burger, and checked Twitter. Within a week, I had gained another million followers, getting me up to 5.6 million. I smiled. Directioners were great. I had gotten a few tweets asking how I was doing, and how Harry was. I replied to a few and followed a couple of fans. Shoving the last bit of burger into my mouth, Harry snapped a picture of me, grinning, and laughed.

“Harry!” I protested, and tried to grab his phone, but he held it out of my reach.

“This is so going on Twitter.”

“No!” I yelled. It was too late. The damage had already been done.

Harry_Styles: Lunch with AmWalker! Looking hungry, are we?

Instantly, my feed blew up. Some fans replied with “aww so cute!” and “you and Harry r so perf!” and “tell Harry I said hi!” which made me smile. But one made my smile evaporate.

“Don’t worry, babe,” Harry reassured me, “She’s just jealous.”

I nodded and smiled. “I know. I won’t let it bother me.” And it didn’t. Yeah, it wasn’t the greatest thing to hear, but I knew that millions of girls would kill to trade places with me. They were insecure and rude to think that insulting me would make Harry like them. They obviously didn’t know how to react, so bullying was their first reaction.

Words were just words, until you made them a reality.

My phone buzzed, and it was a text from Liam.

From: Leeyum

To: Amabel

How’s Lou doing? :(

To: Leeyum

From: Amabel

Not talking, getting worried…

I got a message from Danielle and Sam saying the same thing. It was heart-warming to know that everyone cared so much about Louis.

We got home when Liam said we would. I was dead on my feet still, like the nap I took on the road didn’t help.

“Babe, let’s go.” Harry whispered. Zayn was just waking up, and Niall was still snoring.

“M’kay,” I mumbled, and stumbled onto the sidewalk. From where I stood, I could hear Niall and Zayn talking.

“You had McDonald’s without me?!” Niall screeched.

“Hey! I wasn’t gonna wake you! You’re an ass when someone wakes you!”

“I still want McDonald’s…” Niall mumbled and came out of the car, blonde hair sticking up in various directions.

A few minutes later, Danielle, Liam and Sam pulled up. Sam ran right into Niall’s arm, where they shared a quick kiss. It felt so great to be home. But when I looked around, I realized I wasn’t home. “Hey, Haz?” I asked.

“Hmm?” he looked at me.

“Why are we at your house?”

He chuckled. “I’m driving you home, babe, don’t worry.”

“Oh, okay.” I yawned. Everyone was getting their bags from the car, and I saw Louis sitting in the middle of the sidewalk, staring off into space. I knelt down beside him. “Louis?”

His head snapped in my direction, “Yeah?”

“I had a lot of fun at the beach house. I’ll see you soon.”

A smile played at his lips. “Thanks, Am. For everything.”

“No problem, Boo Bear. Love ya.” I kissed his cheek, and spoke to Liam. “Thanks for letting us use your beach house.”

He grinned. “It was awesome. We’re doing that again some time.”

“I’m looking forward to it.” I hugged him. “We’ve got to hang out soon.”

“I’ll be there.”

I moved to Zayn, Danielle, Sam, and Niall. “Bye guys! This vacation was the best.”

“Totally!” Niall chirped, and pulled me into a hug, squeezing me tight.

“Calm down Nialler, I’ll probably see you in like, two days.”

“What? I can’t hug my best friend?” he faked a hurt expression.

I laughed. “’Course you can!” I gave Danielle, Sam and Zayn a hug, too. “I’ll see you guys later!”

“Bye!” It was strange. We acted like one of us was leaving forever or something. I would see them probably the next day, but I loved them all so much. They were the best friends ever.

“Ready?” Harry grabbed my small hand in his large one and walked us to his car.

“Yes.” I breathed. I couldn’t wait to collapse in my own bed. We drove all day; it was now about 10pm. We had left around noon.

After putting my bag in the backseat, Harry jogged over to the driver’s side. I smiled at him as he started the engine, and started the short drive to my house.

“Can I ask you something?” Harry asked abruptly, catching me by surprise.

“Of course.” I stroked the back of his hand with my thumb.

“How do handle all the hate you get on Twitter?” he looked over at me with a concerned expression, his eyebrows trying to touch. Even when he looked that upset, he looked so beautiful. I loved the way his dark pink lips pouted when he was confused or angry. His green eyes sparkled, and searched for an answer, almost like he was trying to read me. It pulled me in, and it was one of the many reasons why I fell for him so quickly. “Amabel?”

“Oh, s-sorry,” I stammered, “Um, I don’t know. I just ignore it, I guess. I like reading the nice tweets instead, and skip over the negative ones.”

His eyes lit up with his smile. “You are so amazing, you know that, right?”

I blushed. “Only because you tell me all the time.”

He chuckled deeply as we pulled into my driveway. “I’ll call you tomorrow?”

I nodded and paused before speaking. “I love you.”

He leaned over the seat and pressed his lips to mine. The kiss was quick, but slow at the same time. His hand held the back of my neck. After six months of dating, his kisses left my head spinning. When he broke away, he said, “I love you, too.”

I smiled as I walked to my front door, where I waved to the boy who currently had my heart. And I knew as he drove away, that I had his.
