14. Not Goodbye

"Steve! I- what- huh? How- why-?"

Steve charged at her. He barreled his fists into her stomach, readying to steal his beloved sword from her inventory.

The sword popped out easily. He slammed his arm into her gut. She toppled backward, her reflexes useless. He cupped her face above his sword, holding it just far enough from her throat not to kill her- yet.

"I should just plunge this through your sorry little throat, you lying thief, you dirty, nasty little THIEF!" He pushed it harder.

She coughed, spitting blood all over her own face. "Get-" (cough) "OFF! I-"

"You just shut your pretty little mouth, before I silence you for good!"

One strike. One solid blow to her throat, she was a goner. All he had to do was push down.

He couldn't. Not until he got some answers.

"You're working for him, aren't you? AREN'T YOU!" Slamming another fist into her chest, she coughed another wave of blood on herself.

"Who-" she managed to choke out.

She sputtered something like, I have no idea who the heck that is, but Steve knew better.

"Herobrine killed my family. Herobrine burned my town, stole my sword, my armor, my life. And now I find out that the first decent meal I've had was prepared by the hands that did all that? OH HECK NAW! This is not over, Ginger. You will pay!"

She gasped, sucking in more blood than she could hold. "Please (choke) don't- (sputter, cough, choke)- kill- mrph!" The last part was because Steve stuffed his fist in her mouth.

"I'm not going to kill you this way," he decided.

Her eyes were full of gratitude, for a second.

"I'm going to leave you here."

Gratitude gone, the tears washed out the blood from her green eyes. Green, like his mother's. Her throat cleared and she choked out- "I had no choice! You've got to believe me! That man, he forced me to! I don't like this! I don't wanna be a thief! But I would've died. He would've killed me, and then you, and your villagers! I was trying to keep as much peace for as long as you needed to be able to kill him. Please! Let me come. I want to help. I want to make it up to you!"

And Steve believed her. He had no choice. It was either kill this girl, kill her and move on, finish his own life as a cold-hearted murderer, or believe her.

"No! You- will-stay- here. Safe. Not in my way. I don't trust you, but I believe you enough to leave you here."

"Ginger," he replied coldly, trying to bottle up the emotion welling up again inside him.

"Steve, I-"

"What? You what?"

"I... well, I don't know, I..."

But his voice was cut off suddenly by her mouth on his. Despite the suddenness of the kiss, he was able to recover enough to drop his sword and cup her face in his hands.

Steve broke off first, gasping for breath. "Gin-"

"Shh... Steve, I love you."

"I don't want to, but... I guess, I guess I love you too, Ginger."

"Like we were meant to be, despite being, you know, enemies by oppression by... well, Herobrine," she replied breathlessly.

"You're still not coming with me," said Steve.

"Steve! That's not fair!"

"What would be even less fair is if I let you tag along and you, I don't know, like, betray me again," he said.

"I'm really sorry, Steve! Honest. Do I have to write it in blood? I have enough of it on my face to write a novel."

He made a face. "Ew, no thank you. You're still not coming.

Ginger knew she wouldn't take "no" for an answer, but he would never let her come willingly...

...and she was right. "You are not coming, Ginger, and that's final," he remarked sternly. "I can't lose you, or have you turn to Herobrine's side again, or die for not."

"What part of NO do you NOT understand, Ginger?" he exclaimed. "NO means NO!"

Ginger sighed as if agreeing with him. "Fine. Just don't die." A plan was forming ijn her pretty little head. Steve couldn't tell her no for long.

"Not planning on it."

She smiled slightly, cupping his face in her hands.

Uh oh, thought Steve, here it comes... and she kissed him, sweet and tender, as if saying, this is not goodbye or I'll kill you. And for once, he kissed her back. Not goodbye... not goodbye... not... goodbye.
