8. Ginger

Even as he walked through the shadowy mountains that most likely would be his death, Steve's mind wandered to the village. Was Brian ok? How long could they handle it? Where would he find someone to protect them? Was it worth it? Well, of course it was worth the effort he would put into it, but would that effort go to waste? What if he led Herobrine straight to them? No matter how he tried, he couldn't push the thought of Eva's story out of his-

"OOF!" Without paying attention, he had run right into a wall. Nice. Steve shook his head, riding himself of the headache that came with it. Well, that was probably a sign he had to keep his head in reality, the here and now. Speaking of which, Steve didn't know where "here" was. He knew he had gone dead east from the village doors, but that was it. If only he could find a cave here somewhere..

You know those crazy ironic moments, like when someone is eating just what you had been craving that morning, or humming the song you had been singing in your mind, or saying just what you had been thinking? Well, that happened right then. Just as he was looking for a cave, bam!, one appeared. Not twenty blocks away, a dim light, like from a torch, was illuminating a large gap in the rocks. Bracing himself, Steve approached it cautiously. Wielding his sword, Steve took a deep breath and peered into the cave.

Just from a glance, Steve saw someone inside. Herobrine! Now was his chance, while he was alone! Taking a deep breath, he brandished his sword and-

"ATTACK! Your time is up, Herobrine-"

A piercing scream filled the cave, temporarily startling Steve. His opponent took this opportunity to grasp the upper hand and counterattack. He attacked Steve with a stone sword that came from nowhere, knocking out three of his lives.

"Hey- ugg!" He groaned as he attacked his stomach, slicing at him, shattering several so only eight out of his ten lives remained, all in two expertly placed blows.

"Hie-yah!" The opponent knocked Steve aside and pinned him to the wall- and he realized that this wasn't Herobrine at all. This was another player, obviously quite skilled. But this wasn't just any player. This player was all black. Not black-skinned, but draped in a dark robe, hood covering his face. The hems brushed the floor, but only just enough to cover the stranger's feet. Steve could tell by the glittering green eyes that shone from within the hood that it wasn't indeed Herobrine, this new stranger was just a very skilled player.

The player held the sword under Steve's chin, so if he so much as moved he would be skewered of his last two lives. "Who are you? What do you want?" a raspy voice that sounded forced hissed in his ear.

"I- I'm Steve! I didn't mean to attack you- well, I meant to attack you but I thought you were Herobrine- I'm sorry, man! Seriously, please- let-me-go!" he gasped, in a hurry to get away.

The stranger seemed satisfied with that. He slowly let Steve fall out of his grasp and onto the ground, but he didn't put his sword away. "How did you find me?"

"I saw the mountains from my village, and I thought Herobrine lived here. I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone new lived here," he replied shakily.

The stranger nodded, and Steve took this as a sign he was allowed to stand up. "Well, it's been lovely meeting you, but I really should go now," he said.

"Are you sure you don't want to stay to recover a bit? I have an extra bed, some food, some extra clothes...?"

Oh, man, food? All his food had been eaten or destroyed so far, and he was hungry, filthy, and exhausted. His resolve weakened. "Why not?" He muttered.

"Great! I haven't had visitors in a long time!" A perky female voice came. Steve looked around. He didn't remember there being a girl here... then it struck him.

The stranger pulled the hood off his head and revealed "he" was actually a "she"- quite a gorgeous "she", at that- with a long bundle of reddish-gold hair cascading down her back in perfect little curls, bright green eyes, and rosy pinkish cheeks. She slipped out of her robe, revealing a black jogging suit with green highlights that brought out her eyes. The light spatter of freckles across her face, however, didn't take away from her beauty, like it did on some, but instead, enhanced it further. The robes slipped to the ground and she kicked them away.

"Oh, yeah, I forgot to introduce myself," she put her sword away and held out her hand for him to shake. "My name is Ginger."
