16. Creepers- Again?

The shock of having his opponent kiss him in the middle of a fight surprised Steve so much that if, in fact, this had been an actual opponent, he would've been caught off guard and they could've pulverized him. But lucky for him, this hooded figure's mysterious face was revealed as he- or rather, she- leaned in and when they broke apart, he cried out in surprise, "Ginger! What are you doing here?"

She laughed and stood up. "Gotcha. You actually think I'd sit around in my cave and let you have all the fun? Uh huh. Right, like I could do that if I wanted to. Besides, no matter how angry you get, I know you're secretly glad I'm here."

Steve sputtered for words, and not thinking of anything to say, just turned redder than a tomato and hissed like a creeper. Wait, no, that wasn't him. Ginger's eyes went as round as saucers, focusing in on something behind Steve. He slowly turned, and went pale.

More creepers?! thought Steve angrily.

But these creepers weren't gathering to explode. No, it was far more... relaxed. None were hissing their loudest, it was all just a peaceful, calm hiss, very unlike the "I'm about to blow up your house" hiss. Even so, he pulled his sword out cautiously and held it out toward the pack.

But as the others hissed and retreated, one creeper, particularly larger than the others, stayed in front. It didn't seem frightened of the sparking blue sword as the others were. Suddenly, a voice spoke in Steve's head.

Peace, players, we are not going to harm you, it said.

The bewildered look on Ginger's face told Steve that he hadn't imagined it, she had heard it too.

"What- what do you want with us?" Steve asked tentatively, not putting his sword away yet.

Word in these parts travels quickly, does it not? The voice replied. It was said that a pair of gamers was going on a quest to kill Herobrine. We are here to ask if that rumor is true.

Steve nodded slowly. "But... we didn't mean any monsters harm by it, honest! Please... don't hurt us!"

Hurt you? Why would we hurt our saviours? My dear gamers, we will not harm the one about to complete the task we have wanted completed for so long!

Steve remembered then- Herobrine hadn't trusted creepers. Of course, the creepers would want revenge.

Our kind used to be very successful in the monster world, said the voice. We were flourishing. Respected by all, we lived in simple peace and harmony with the others. Then that... that Herobrine, he took that away so long ago... when he offered the monster kinds all sorts of tempting offers, of riches, respect, and high powers. One species at a time, he enlisted his army. But when the creeper kind tried to enlist... our ancestor, the creeper that was enlisted, showed himself untrustworthy. Herobrine did not trust any of us after that fateful day... and now, we are outcasts in the mobs. We are loners. Taunted by the armies. Slaughtered as much as your precious villagers. Now, you haves shown yourself to have a ghost of a chance at winning this battle, but with our help you can ensure your victory. Let us join your cause. We will fight, and we will die for you. We give you the creeper's alliance.

Steve shuddered. Creepers, helping him? It was a crazy idea.

"Yes! Steve, this is wonderful! Yes! Help us, please! Blow up Herobrine! Do it! We accept your offer!" Ginger yelled happily from next to Steve.

Steve was still struck dumb, he couldn't reply, so he just nodded weakly.

Ginger squealed gleefully next to him. "Steve! We can do this now! Come on!"

She grabbed his hand, and the spark that traveled between them shocked Steve back to the present.

"Sure... why not?"

The creepers all hissed in agreement.

We will aid you in your direction, young hero. Herobrine's cave is just four hundred or so blocks dead north of here, you will see a rather large pile of cobblestone in front blocking your path. Go through that, and you will see Herobrine's army. They will be either training, feasting, or just milling around. Sneak thorough that, and find Herobrine's chambers. He will be in the back of the cave somewhere. Don't get caught, and good luck. Do kill him painfully, if possible, young hero.

"Hero? As in, one hero?" Ginger burst out. "Hello, creeper dude, there's two of us. Don't be excluding the girl!"

Steve turned to Ginger. "Um, no. There is one, because you are going home now. This is too dangerous for you."

"Dangerous? Who do you think you're talking to, a dippy girl wannabe gamer? Uh-uh. I can handle anything that you send my way. I am coming on this journey."

Steve shook his head. "No, Ginger, this is my quest. It's dangerous. Let me do this."

"Steve, Herobrine destroyed my home too, he captured my mom, he drove my dad insane, he prompted me to lure you to your death, my only friend, and I am not going to sit upon my duff while you get all the glory. Not gonna budge, so don't try."

"You could die, though!"

"I ran away from home when I was eleven, I lived on my own in the harsh wilderness in my childhood, I can take this. I wasn't even a teen when I killed my first creeper- no offense, he was trying to kill me," she threw an apologetic glance at the creepers, "and I can take this quest with my eyes covered."

"I. Am. Coming."

Steve was silent for a long time, then finally, he said, "If you die, I'll never be able to forgive myself for this..."

Ginger smiled. She had won one more battle.
