3. Chapter 3

They died when I was seven. We were on a cruise in Spain - my mother had always loved travelling abroad. Turkey was never enough for her - she wanted to see the world for herself!

The sea that night was as calm as ever. On board, there was a party going on, wild and careless in fancy dress. My mother was a mermaid, but my father believed it to be childish nonsense. I was supposed to be a beautiful fairy princess. My father had gone along with the idea the whole week, until that night. That night of disastrous tragedy.

When my father saw me in that dress - a gorgeously long, flouncing gown, with little blue wings that fluttered and shone in the moonlight - he instantly hated it, saying I looked like a little kid dressing up as a middle aged woman. I'd never seen him so angry. It was petrifying.

He refused to come to the party and stormed away.

We didn't see him all night and got worried. Then, as the clock tolled eleven, we saw him, a white shirt leaning over the cruise ship railing. We knew he was angry, but what would drive him to kill himself?

He saw us, a look of agony passed through his face - then he dived over the rails. He was a strong swimmer, but he seemed no match for the forceful waves. Mother ran to him, holding out her hand, but he couldn't reach.

She tried leaning over further...

It was then that she fell in, the waves consuming her, drowning her as she could not swim, following my father down to the dark depths of the ocean.

I was traumatised. I still am.

My aunt was my last relative alive. She was the only one I could go to. She took me in - that was the only thing she could do. She couldn't leave her only niece on the streets to die.

With these thoughts in my head, I opened my eyes and gingerly walked off the plane.
