1. Chapter 1

The loud buzzing in my ears forced me into a more nervous state than ever. This was the first time I'd been aboard to compete in my entire life time - and yes, I was terrified.

Pole vaulting. It's my life, my dream. I started at the tender age of eleven, and now, here I was on a jolting, rattling plane from my home land Turkey, to the bustling streets of Sydney, Australia.

I had no idea of my competition, who it may be, and how good. In Turkey it was always the same, the same girls fighting for the win, the same team mates cheering each other on. Aizawl Ohamilad, Fredtct Romagurta and then ... me.

Lilian Fertina. My mother Clara, a fair English rose, my father Alper came from deep, Turkish origins. He used to call me his Turkish Rose.

Not any more.

I looked strikingly similar to my father, so much so, people asked if I were his sister - you see, my mother and father were young when they had me. It was a fashion in Turkey at the time - nineteen years ago today. 1993. It seems such a long time ago now.

Everything. Everything has changed since then.
