Future Gladiator

Seventeen year old Burnet is brutally taken from her home to become the face of the Government Gladitorial Division. Her story will unravel both her past and her future and force her to make decisions with both consequences and rewards. Friends will become enemies and enemies may be the exact opposite of what they appear.

7. Time to Speak Up

“So, you’re what I have to work with. Not bad for a bunch of country villagers. All good looking from what I’ve been told, just what we need of course. Welcome to your new home children. You will train, live, sleep, eat and fight in this arena. You will be filmed in this arena.” She begins amidst the gasps and mutterings of those around me.

“Yes, filmed.” She continues, “You are the face of the Government’s Gladiatorial Division, that’s the GDD to the uneducated weevils among you. You are a warning to the people, the rebellion. You are the very epitome of strength and brilliance that we are showing the rebellion.”

She stops pacing and turns to place her hands on the railing in front of her. She raises an eyebrow as she surveys us with a haughty and exceptionally conceited air about her. I wonder if she knows that arrogance isn’t a virtue. I doubt it. She seems to thrive on her confidence.

“I know that some of you are going to be confused by this. You were all taken from your homes and family. I know that you will be wondering why you will scare the rebellion; you think that this will show them just how barbaric you believe we are. You are thinking that this will incite action on their part ‘Oh those poor children! We need to save them from the government, blah, blah, blah.’ She snickers.

“Wrong. They won’t attack us at first because the rebellion is made of the ones they hold dear. Your loved ones, family, friends and fellow villagers, make up that rebellion. And now your simple and naïve minds have skipped onto the next train og thought. You think they won’t attack you? But you will have no choice but to attack them. And of course they will defend themselves, guilt will eat at them then they will realise they’ve killed off the reason for the rebellion. Their aim is to save your generation from the ‘cruel’ government they oppose. You will do as you are told. You will train to go in the gladiatorial army; you will do what we want. Or there will be severe consequences.”

And turning around she swiftly turned to exit the stage.

And quickly I step forward and speak out, “What makes you think we’re going to stay on the side you trained us for?”
