Future Gladiator

Seventeen year old Burnet is brutally taken from her home to become the face of the Government Gladitorial Division. Her story will unravel both her past and her future and force her to make decisions with both consequences and rewards. Friends will become enemies and enemies may be the exact opposite of what they appear.

8. Their Strength is Their Weakness

I can hear the gasps of the people behind me. I’m also wondering what I just did. You’d think that being the quiet girl who used to sit in the library I’d just shut up. But no, the shy one suddenly chooses the wrong time to get some confidence and raise her voice. I notice that ‘Miss Unforgiving’, as I have swiftly and aptly named her, has turned back around to face us while I continue to mentally chastise myself.

“Because, dear Burnet,” She scorns, “We aren’t putting you on the front line. We’re using you. We're using all of you.” She replies, as she sweeps her arms around her to encompass the coliseum with a sweet smile on her face.

“While you yourself might change sides if you were to be given the chance, which you won’t may I add, the children on the battlefield have no choice but to do what we wish. Not unless they want to die too. We’re going to film you and then send it out to both the Gladiators and the rebels. The rebels will have no choice but to kill the children; including you, once they see how well trained you are although they love you and want to protect you. No matter who you are, they will have to defend themselves.  They’ll be forced to destroy you; they’ll lose their objective and their aim. They’ll have nothing to fight for. You children in here are the reason all the others will die. We will film your punishments, training and work to send to those who unlike you do not have the luxury of being the faces of this new age of Gladiators. They will see your pain and fear it; they will see your glory and desire it. However, your triumphs, training and fights will be filmed in here and shown to the rebels. Your excellence will be shown to the rebels so they have to fight. And we will win. You are trained to win. We will strike them in their weakness. And when they lose they will never start another war for fear of losing more children. They will do as they are told to protect you because their strength is their weakness.” She finishes with gusto.

And finally without interruption she leaves the stage.
