The Father Of Jewels

A group of con artists, or "grifters", work together to pull off "long cons" on greedy, wealthy people. They do all this without getting caught by police, and even if they do, all evidence is destroyed. They ensure they cover all angles. However it all seems easy up to now, as a family member is put in the spotlight, and for two of them, the truth is waiting to come out...

6. New Mark

Canary Wharf glistened in the distance as Nick stood staring across London. Alex came out and joined him in his black suit and red tie. He held Rob's notebook which he had been studying all morning

"Look at the earlier pages." He said to Nick in a gruff voice, handing him the book. Nick flicked to the first page and read the variety of words and numbers which had been written by Rob.

"Child's handwriting?"

"I'd say about, 8 years of age." Alex replied. "But you know me and my suppression of feelings Nick, and I'm a big fan of that. But this, is his father, and he's not going away." Nick looked to the ground. Alex reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver memory stick, handing it to Nick. "I think, we have all we need to start." He nodded to Nick, who repeated the gesture back, still looking slightly nervous.

They turned and walked inside, Alex in front. Amanda was sitting counting money and Ryan relaxing. Rob was laid back on a retractable chair writing.

"If I may have your attention please." Alex pressed a remote control to bring down the projector screen.

"Not now Alex, I'm a bit busy preparing the grift." Rob smiled. Nick walked over to the black ACER laptop that was on the table in front and connected the USB pen into the back.

"Presenting to you, our new mark." Alex seemed to ignore Rob and carried on. "Mr Daniel Kennedy." Rob looked up, as did Amanda. This man was their father. "A senior, returning to Britain for the first time since emigrating to Melbourne, Australia in 1987. He left behind his wife and 2 children and a year after his departure his wife passed away, leaving the children..." Alex had no time to carry on before Rob interrupted.

"What is this some kind joke to you?" He said.

"Anything but." Alex replied.

"Alex, what are you doing?" Amanda cut in.

"Presenting our new mark and possibly, POSSIBLY, clearing the air as well." He pointed swiftly to both Rob and Amanda, who gave a quick glance over to each other.

"If you made up your mind to con him, Rob, you'd make sure it was done professionally. That means we do it as a team. It also means that for the duration of the con the mark remains a mark like any other." Nick moved to sit next to Rob as he said this. "That way, maybe you won't have to reflect on all this from a jail cell."

"We're gonna con their dad?" Ryan asked, slightly confused.

"Yes. If everyone's in agreement?" Nick looked round to everyone.

"Well, who knows, maybe it'll get it out of his system." Amanda sighed at Rob.

"Well if we are all agreed?" Alex asked. No replies but hardly noticeable head nods were his only reply. "Mr Kennedy is now a respected businessman in his adopted home of Melbourne. He owns a very successful property developing company and has a portfolio in Australia, on several sites in Europe, and one, here in London." Rob looked up, suddenly interested in what Alex was saying. "That's all I have so far." Alex concluded.

"That's okay Alex, we'll get to know our mark better while we're in the grift." Nick stood up to stand beside Alex.

"Wait, hang on." Rob stood. "This is still my grift, if you guys want to help that's great, but I'm calling the shots on this one." Alex removed his glasses.

"Wouldn't have it any other way." He smiled at Rob. Nick looked surprised.

"I think I need a drink." Nick said, and walked towards the stairs.
