20. What's The Point?

What's The Point?

"How have you been?" I say as I sit at Edie's small kitchen table. She starts organizing her groceries and avoids looking at me. "Edie?"

"Harry, why are you here?"

"Didn't we agree to talk after the trial?"

"Yes, but..."

"But what?"

"You're leaving in a week."

"So? Are you kidding me?"

"Harry, I really do like you. But, I don't want this to be something that's rushed. If we're going to do it, we do it right."

"Really is that why you were ignoring my callls?"

"Harry." She says putting her groceries down and coming over to the table, "I just, I don't think I can do this right now."

"What changed?" I say getting up.

"Nothing, I just realized..."

"You're leaving, what's the point?"

"What's the point? Really, Edie?"

I turn to open the door, as Edie holds onto my arm.

"Harry, I didn't mean for it to sound so terrible."

"No, it's fine, I get it."

"Have a nice life, Ms. Messer."

"Harry, wait!"

She runs after me as I walk out towards my car, but I get in before she reaches me and I drive away.

And so, as I learned the hard way, not everything turns out the way we want it to. At least, not when we really want it to.

"How did it go?" Louis says as soon as I step in the door.

"It didn't."

I walk down the hallway to my room, and could hear the four of them conversing in harsh whispers in the kitchen.

As I take off my boots and hang my jacket I hear little steps on the wooden floor.

She runs to me and expects to be picked up.

"What's up baby?" I hug her tightly to me and she burrows her blonde head into my shoulder.

"Daddy, somthing wrong?"

I furrow my brow and have her face me, "You're a double agent! Doing your uncles' dirty work are we?"

She giggles and I look towards the door, "You can come out now."

"Hi." Liam says as the rest of the boys nod.

"Nice try."

 "Look, we were just worried."

"I know. Don't be. I think everything worked out for the best."

"Are you sure?" Niall asks.

"Yeah, mate. Just, don't worry about it."

"Who's up for some ice cream?'

Emma starts wriggling in my arms, wanting to get down. I laugh as I let her step onto the ground, and watch her run to the kitchen with Niall. Zayn and Liam follow. Yet Louis still stood with his arms crossed, looking at me.

"I know it's not alright."

"You fancy her. She fancies you. What is the issue."

"She doesn't see the point in having a relationship right now."

"Why can't you be friends."

I mumble, "You're right."

"I know you're quite taken with her, Harry. But be real, mate. We're going to be gone for a long time, you can't expect to maintain a new relationship that way."

"Did you storm out?"

"Harry." He looks at me with an arched eyebrow.

"You have to talk to her. Like an adult."

"I know. Just, not now. I think we both need to cool off a bit."

"Alright. Well, let's go have some ice cream then."

I thought that it would be so simple. That after the hearing was over that Edie and I would have a chance to see if things could work. But as always, I was too ahead of myself. Aside from how it would effect Emma, I didn't think how it would effect Edie.

Edie would be apart from me, and from Emma. It wouldn't be fair to anyone to go through with this, would it?

Maybe it was just best to leave as friends and go from there.

Maybe that's the only way to salvage any chance we ever had.

"Alright, passport."

"For both of you?"

"All set."

As Louis and I go over the final checklist for our legal papers to leave the country, Emma plays with her rag doll in the living room. I sigh as Louis keeps double checking that everything is in line.

"Lou, it's all good."

"We only have a little less than a week! I have to make sure."

I smile to myself knowing that he was starting to grow anxious at the thought of leaving once more. We all felt it. We were leaving home for so long, after we had just gotten used to being back. But this time it wasn't hitting me as hard as the other lads, I think it's because the thing I would miss the most about home, was never leaving my side.

"Mate, your phone is vibrating." Louis says without paying much attention to it.

My stomach drops as I read the caller ID.

"Hey, do you think I could swing by and see you?"

"Yeah!" I sounded too over eager and could already hear Louis chuckling to myself. I clear my throat and try again. "Yes, of course."
"I'll be there in an hour?"

I get up from my seat as Louis simply looks at me.

"Going to go primp?"

"Bug off."

I smile to myself as I walk back to my room. Thinking that maybe things could work out.
