13. Right?

After spending such an enjoyable afternoon at the coffee shop, we had decided that perhaps it was best to meet there whenever we had to talk about the case. I had to guess it was because she believed that it relaxed me to be in a comfortable setting, surrounded with endless bananas and orange juice. And she also didn't have to wear a pant suit whenever we met, so that made her especially happy.

Honestly, although there was a constant anxiety looming over me, it felt as if my sadness was slowing ascending away, and happiness was replacing it. Not only was it thanks to my new found friendship with Edie, but to my baby girl. She made every day worth living for.

"Only a few more days. Have you decided who is testifying for you?" Louis asks as he buckles Emma into his car.

"Yeah, I actually did."

"Well, honestly I chose you, mate."

He turns around and looks at me, trying to hide the wide smile that was starting to show his face "Thank you Harry. I'll do you proud."

"Just be honest, that'll make me proud."

"Anyone else?"

"Um, I wanted to ask Simon."

"Oh, yes. That would be a very good character witness. He has had no discretion in telling you off whatsoever."

"And Edie."

"The social worker? Isn't that a conflict of intrest?"

"Well" I say leaning against his car, "Technically, she has to go up on the stand. And yes, she would be testifying honestly and on behalf of me. The judge has no problem with it."

"So, I take it she knows you very well?"

"We've become friends, I would hope."

"You would hope?"

"I don't know, would that be a real conflict of intrest?"

"Not at all, what's wrong with being friends...unless?"

"You fancy her don't you?

"I do not!"

"Uhuh. Well, I'd say yes to the friendship, no to a relationship for now."

"I don't fancy her."

"Okay, well when you realize you do, then we can have an adult conversation about it."

"Why do you think I fancy her?"

"Harold, really? Do you not think I know you by now? How many times have you been to the coffee shop with Edie this week?"

"The case is coming up."

"Yes, but you don't have to meet at a coffee shop. But, you know what. I think this," He motions to me and moves his finger in a circular motion "Whatever this is, is making you happy. So, the only thing I will advise you to do is to keep it at a friendship until the case is over and you don't have to work with her anymore. Okay?"

"I don't even fancy her."

"Harry, please. You've always fancied older women."

"Lou, she's like three years older than us. That's not a lot."

"Okay, well, i've said my peace." He turns to go around the car and get into it. He lowers the window and says "Good luck on your date."

"It's not a date!" But he was already driving away.

It wasn't a date...right?

As rain poured once more in this typical London fashion, Edie and I met at the coffee shop for one last time before the day in court. Although there were still a few days left, we both had such tight schedules it would be nearly impossible to meet once more before.

"Alright, so do you have who you're going to have testify on your behalf?"

I watch her as she shuffles through papers, and pushes back a single strand of blonde hair that has fallen across her face. Her cheeks are slightly flushed, as they always are after her second cup of coffee. Wait. Why did I know that?

"Harry? Hello?"

"Oh, yeah. I have two people."

"May I know who?"

"Um, Louis and Simon."

"As in Simon Cowell. The man who chose to let the public shred you to pieces?"

"As in the perfect character witness, don't you think?"

"Well, in all honesty he's been very supportive about this whole situation. If anyone were to see the change in me, it would be him."

She nods, "Am I still going to testify?"

"And why is that?"

"You know first hand that i'm trying so hard to do right by Emma. Don't you?"

"And you know about my past."

"Then I trust you."

"Thank you." she says smiling downwards, the blush upon her cheeks growing redder. My eyes travel from her cheeks to her eyes to her plump pink limps. I try to convince myself that I was looking at her this way, as if it were the first time, because Louis had put the idea in my head. That I was only more aware of her presence because Louis had put into words the preposterous idea that I fancied her. It was preposterous, right?

"Would you like anything else?" Elizabeth looks at me worriedly as she holds her notepad in her hand. "Are you okay Harry?"

"Oh, yes! I'm fine love, i'm fine!" I chuckle it off, knowing that Edie was noticing my increased absent mindedness, "We don't need anything else, actually. Thank you so much Elizabeth." She smiles as she walks away.

"I should get going." Edie says as she starts to put her coat on.

I look out the window and see that it's still pouring, "Let me take you home. You walked didn't you?"

"Yeah, um, okay. I guess that'll be alright."

"Okay, let's get going then."

"Please promise me, you will not say one more horrid knock knock joke while on tour" Edie says as she fiddles with the heater in my car.

"Hey, people like my jokes."

"Nobody likes those jokes, they tolerate them because you tell them."

"You laughed that one time."

"Because you told it, and it was the first time you told me one. I had to be polite. I had also hoped it would be the last."

"Hey now, i'm pretty sure a lot of people laugh at my jokes."

"Do the boys laugh at them?"

I look straight ahead as I finally respond in a low mutter "I'm not allowed to tell them anymore in their presence."

"Aha! See! And they're like your brothers, yet they can't even put up with you."

"Are you saying you can't put up with me?"

"Of course I can't! I'm only here for Emma" She says with a very apparent smirk.

"Well, I'm part of the deal. You can't have either or, only both."

"I don't mind that package deal at all." I could literally hear the smile in her voice, and it made my stomach flutter. My stomach hasn't fluttered in ages. What is happening to me? "I'm right ahead. Turn left."

As we turn onto her driveway I get out with an umbrella, "I'll take you to your front door."

"Alright, thank you."

I walk very closely to her, making sure the umbrella covered us both. I could smell her perfume and feel her warmth. As we walked up the steps, under the cover of the umbrella with the sound of rain above us, she turned to look at me. And I saw it.

I saw it.

Her eyes locked onto mine and she quickly looked away, I could see the blush across her face, even in the darkness.

"Thanks for everything Harry."

"Anytime." She walks in quickly, as if trying to escape.

And I stay on her porch, if only for a few seconds. It still lingered in the air, this weird sensation. But I swear, I saw the moment it changed. The moment we both realized it.

I'm not crazy, right?
