3. Part One- The Oblivion

I will never forget the day that my personal hell began. It was a damp and bleak Sunday afternoon in the middle of January. Next week, I faced the horrors of some modular exams in the dreaded Year 11 GCSE exams. If I couldn’t cope with these ones, god knows how I’d cope with the summer ones. I definitely had been revising hard for my standards, but Maths had never been my strong point. I decided that I needed a break and after grabbing a can of Coke from the fridge, I slumped on the settee in front of the TV. I flicked from channel to channel. Again, I was home alone. Lily had text me asking how my weekend had been and I sent my usual response of ‘pretty crap.’ Saturday had consisted of a lie in, eating, revision and a late night trip to the cinema with a bunch of lads from school. I just had no excitement or purpose outside of school. I couldn’t see Lily because she was always gallivanting off somewhere and being busy. This weekend it was a trip to the coast with a few pals and then she had to see her Nan tonight. I had missed her. Meanwhile Aaron had disappeared off the face of the earth. He’d played pool with me Friday night at the youth centre and reluctantly informed me that he had a packed weekend with some serious stuff coming up. I knew it would involve Leo Curtis. I asked no questions and just hoped the moron would come out unscathed.

It was about 8:45 pm when my phone rang. I groaned in annoyance that my FIFA football session had been interrupted and reached over to my bedside cabinet. AARON flashed vibrantly on the display and I flipped it up to accept the call.

“Calvin, Cal… I’m fucked man… I’ve messed up… FUCK!”

Aaron’s monotone voice boomed with genuine fear into my ear. I frowned with concern and suddenly became alerted, sitting up completely rigid.

“Aaron calm down bro… What’s happened? Breathe for fuck sake and explain!”

“He’s gonna kill me. Leo is gonna kill me. I don’t know what to do man!”

“Well what the fuck have you done? This is why you shouldn’t get involved with him! Look at what happens when you fuck up! Where are you and what’s happened?”

I was getting pissed off but also worried for Aaron. He was a proud bloke and would never admit he needed help or was in trouble unless it was serious. His voice also sounded unusually scared. Usually he shakes everything off and isn’t bothered about consequences. This was different. A pause.

“… I was delivering one of Leo’s packages. It was to one of his major clients who gives him the most cash.”

Fucking hell Aaron.

“Please don’t tell me you’ve lost it Aaron. Why the fuck do you get involved? I mean if the police catch you with drugs you’re finished. Why don’t you just stay out of all this shit?”

I realised I was beginning to shout and pace around my cramped bedroom, stepping on all the crap that cluttered the floor space.

“I know you hate it mate but the money you get for it is good! And no I’m not a fucking idiot and haven’t lost it!”

How ironic. You’re not an idiot but you do drugs and the dirty work for a gangster. Nice one dumbass.

“Well what’s the problem then?”

“I was nearly at the drop off point to meet the contact. However to get there I had to cut through a few gardens. Some old bloke was in one of them and saw me flying over his fence. He started shouting and tried to stop me. I didn’t want any attention, so I hit the fucking loudmouth full on in the jaw. He fell back and cracked his head. I just wanted him to be quiet Cal! He’s bleeding heavily from his head and I don’t know what to do!”

Aaron’s helpless and breathy tone echoed in my ears that were red hot. I felt dizzy and collapsed onto my bed. My head span so fast. Had my best mate just killed someone? Had he just been stupid enough to involve his innocent best friend? It sickened me. I knew that I would have to go help him. Aaron was hopeless at the best of time, let alone in a situation like he found himself in. Why did I value him so much? He had been there for me but he just got into trouble and I didn’t want to be any part of it.

“Fuck Aaron! Where the fuck are you?”

“I’m in some posh place. I mean it’s not an estate. It’s not far from the Stags Head, I know that.”

I knew where he was. I knew East London like the back of my hand.

“Meet me there then. I’ll be round in about twenty minutes.”

“Ok mate. I’m so sor…”

“Just shut up and stay with him!”

I hung up and held my head in my hands. I stamped angrily and stumbled around in a daze. My time to be dragged under had come, and it hurt me so much that my eyes stung, heart pumped like it was going to burst and my head was going to explode.
