2. Little Wings - Short Story

The pixie size of me hates this large suitcase. If we were in a wrestling match, it would be kicking my but.

"Let me help you." Turning I see my father, Jack; I haven't seen him in years but he looks the same. Black hair, tan, and the same blue eyes as me.

My father and I aren't super close. We talk on the phone every two weeks but that's about it.

"What, to old to hug your father in public?" He said.

Most seventeen’s would have said yes. But seeing as no one here knows me; there was no embarrassment for me; only an awkward hug.

Pulling up to his summer beach house I can see a bunch of people. Great! Now, I get to spend rest of the day as the kid from the other women.

Lucky enough, he helped me caring up my suitcase to the room I would be staying in.

I change in to pair shorts, a tank-top I grab my woven over top. I took a beep breath before walking down the stairs. The noise coming from the back told me not to go.

Sneaking into the kitchen, thinking I might be able to slip away. I see Tony my stepbrother. He had blonde hair, blue eyes and was jock with a capital j.

     "Quinn?" He asked.

     "Hi." I said.

"Where's dad?" It's odd for me, hearing some other kid calling him dad.

"Um, I think out back." I said.

"Cool..." Tony said "well, I'll catch you later."

I've never been close with my step siblings.

I try to stay invisible as walk though the crowd. When some guy walked right into me; knocking me on to my bum.

"Sorry." The guy who knocked me down said.

Offering me his hand I took it, pulling me up.

     "Thanks." I said.

He had brown messy hair, hazel eyes and a cute smile.

     "I'm..." He started.

     "Nick!" Someone yelled at him.

It was my stepsister, Heather, she has blonde hair, blue eyes, she was a totally Barbie. I don't blame her; her mother is the same was. Maybe it's just part of her DNA.

"I see your getting friendly with my sister." She said while looking at our hands.

     I rip my hand away.

     "Stepsister." I said.

Nick tried to explain what had happened. But she just glared at him.

     "Whatever. Hi Quinn." She said.

You know the saying 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer'? Well, that's what Heather dose.

     "Hey." I said.

"Love your hair, it's longer this time." Heather said.

"Well, it has been a few years." I said.

"Too many, if you ask me." She said.

"If you don't mind I was going to go call my mom, let her know made fine." I lied. I already sent her a text.

"Okay, but don’t be a stranger come back." She smiled at me.

"Thanks again." I said to Nick. He just nodded his head.

I looked back over at the party I have been gone for hours and no one has come looking for me. All I know is I'm not waste my life or time at a stupid party; I'm not welcome at.

More time pass when out of nowhere Nick showed up.

     "Hey." He said

"Shouldn't you be with your girlfriend?" I asked.

"We're not together, together." He said.

"What'ch you mean?" I asked as I sat down. He sat me to me.

"She said let's try to work things out weeks ago but things just aren't working." Nick said.

I could tell he has had a little to drink.

"Why don't you just tell her?" I asked.

"We are talking about the same Heather, right?"

I giggled "I guess you do have a bit of a point."

"You know when I was walking over here it looked like you had wings." Nick said.

     "What?" I said.

"By how the sunset and clouds looked…"

"I think you've had a little too much to drink" I said.

     "That to..." He said.

I watched the waves as Nick lady his head on my shoulder. I think he's about to pass out.

"Come on, let’s get you back." I said standing up and helping him up.

     "Thanks." Nick said.

     "Your welcome."

He then kissed me. I didn't push him away but I kissed him back. I knew it was wrong but I couldn't help it.

The walk back took longer then I thought. I couldn't find Heather so I just took him up to my room and put him in the bed. I crashed on the floor.

"Quinn..." Heather said; waking me up.

    "Nick!" she yelled.

      "Sshh." I said.

"What had too much fun with my boyfriend?" She said.

"Nothing happened. I could find you last night and he was about to pass out."

"Yea, right." She walked over rips the pillow from under him head then smacks him in the face with it and walks out.

My cell start ringing garbing it I locked myself in the closest bathroom.

     "Hey, Mom." I said.

     "Hi, baby. How's it going?"

"Barbie thinks I slept with her guy. Haven't seen dad sense he picked me up. All I’m know as is Jack other kid from another women." I blurted all at once.

"Sweetie, I'm sorry. Do you want me to come get you?" She asked.

    "No. I'll live."

"Just remember, we don't let nobody bring us down." She said.

We've been though a lot but we do our best to come out on top.

      We said our goodbyes.

"Wings? Are you all right?" It was Nick and he remembers last night.

Opening the door I said, "I should be asking you that; you’re the one who go attack with a pillow."

"True." He said; smiling at me.

It’s only been three days and time couldn't be going slower. Nick and I have been hanging out as it seems Heather and Tony is nothing but mean to me. As for my father and his wife, I haven't seen them.

"Yeah, the party is going to be sick." I over heard Heather say.

"Nick?" Heather said, "Yea', still slumming it with my stepsister." He didn’t say anything just walked out the back door.

You know you learn a lot about someone when they don't think you’re around.

I step out where she could see me.

"Gotta go." She said hanging up the phone.

"Still having fun with my guy? You know I never thought of you as the girl who took other girls guys."

"Well, I'm not." I said.

"You so are, you show up take my dad, my guy; what you want my life?"

"First off, you took my dad. And second I don't want you life. I can't stand it here." I said.  She didn't believe one word I said.

"To him and to us, you’re just the girl he had with another woman." She spat at me.

I have to say that did sting a bit.

"No matter what you say – it won't hurt me."

"Oh, really. The fact that your father skipped so many holidays just so he could be with me and Tony. Or the fact he just didn't want to spend it with you."

"Your words don't mean a thing." I said but even I could hear the shakiness in my voice.

"Is that why your about to cry?" she asked.

"I'm not."

"When Nick's done with you, witch will be here soon, he'll come crawling back to me; like he always dose." She said.

"Keep talking, all I know is..."

"All you know is what? That I'm right?"

I was about to say 'you may be right but at less I'm me. At less I have my own dreams; not what my parents what my dreams to be. At less I'm not afraid to fly instead off being stuck.' But my father and her mother walked in.

Heather’s mother was just like her; blonde, tan, and fake. I didn't even have the chance to say anything when Heather started crying. Full on, tears and everything. I was shocked.

"Hey, homey what wrong?" Her mother, Lilly, asked.

Heather then mumbled something about me and how I said Jack isn't really her father. Everyone in the room looked at me like I had just sinned all sins.

"I did not." I said.

"I don't want to hear your lies." Lilly yelled.

"But...Dad I didn't."

He did not say anything, he just glared at me.

"I didn't want to be here anyways. I'm not part of this family. I don't even have a dad. So why would I say that. I'm just suck here until my mom is back home then I'm never coming here again." I yelled at my father more then anyone.

I slammed the back door. Headed for the water, when I seem a cooler; I pulled it with me. I don't care what's in it I'm drink it and never going back there. Well, to get me belongs and then never going back there.

It was around eight, when I had put down most of the drinks. Pop, water and wine. I never drink. So after a half of bottle of wine I was feeling a little tipsy.

"Go away." I told Nick.

But like most people he doesn’t listen.

"Wings, are you drunk?"

"So, what if I am?" He sat next to me.

"You told me you never drink." Nick said.

"I don't."

"Come on let's get you back." He said.

"I'm not going back."

"What? You’re just going to live here?" He asked.

"Just until it's time for me to go home." I said.

"I'll stay with you." He offered.

"If you think that's going to chance my mind; you’re wrong." I said.

His brown hair was moving slightly in the wind.

"If that doesn't the fact that the water is getting high and will soon be high tide should."

I rolled my eyes at him.

"Why are you being nice to me? No, one here likes the girl from the other women." I asked.

I've wanted to ask but never the right time.

"I do. Because you’re different. Your not scared to jump cause you know your feet can't touch the ground, you know you’re meant to fly." Nick said.

If there was ever a cheesy answer to that question that was it. But as the same time I liked it. The last thing I remember was Nick walking me up the stairs.

The sun was shining; I sat up in bed. My head was killing me. I ran my hands over my face the up thought my hair. But something wasn't right my fingers went right thought it. I ran to the bathroom and screamed.

My hair! It was cut short! I just screamed. My father came running in followed but Heather and Tony who tried not to giggle.

"Quinn, what did you do?" My father asked.

"I didn't do it. I just woke up and it was like this."

"Well, someone had to?" He said.

I looked over at Heather; she looked all sweet at my father. I knew then this was going to suck!

I had three days left. Then I would be home and away from them. The hair cutting was just the start of Heather and Tony’s wrath of evil.

They chanced out my shampoo for sixteen hours I was orange. They put bugs in my food; witch come on is a twelve year old move.

Heading to the door someone jumped out making me jump.

"Nick, you..."

"Charmer? Good-looking? I mean the list goes on." He winks at me.

"Come on, freak; I'll race you to the beach!" I said.

“Hey, I don’t think that was in the list.” He said.

I rolled my eyes and took off running,

“You didn't say go!" Nick yelled after me.
"I don't need no "Ready. Steady. Go!" I yelled.

I hardly beat him to the beach but after walking for hours I said “Thanks for going shopping with me today.”

“I still can’t believe they died your clothes.”

“You’re telling me, my mom was so furious.”

“Wings?” It the only name he calls me by.

He leaned in and kissed me. This time I didn’t feel bad not one bit. I like Nick but knew after the next few days I would probably never see him.

“You know, if Heather seen you do that I would never hear the end of it, ever.” I said smiling at him.

“Don't let what they say keep you up at night and they can't detain you, Wings.”

I smiled I pulled him close I was about to kiss him something hit me in the head. It was a football, tossed by Tony.

“Are you alright?” Nick asked.

“I think so.”

“Tony, what the hell?” Nick said.

“Sorry man didn’t see her there.” He smiled.

“Say sorry to her.” Nick said.

“Whatever.” Tony said; then he walked off.

Nick whet to go after him but I stepped in front of him.

“Don’t it’s what they want.”

“But…” He started “I don’t even care.” I said.

It was around three in the morning when we made are way inside. I couldn’t sleep so I went to get some water.

“Look who it is.” It was my step-sister.

I acted like she wasn’t there but sadly, no luck.

“Having fun with my leftovers?” I didn’t say anything.

“He’ll come crawling back to me.” She said; still not a word from me.

“Your mom must be so happy she has a brake from you.” She just wouldn’t stop the whole time I got a glass of water. She spat out pretty much random stuff. I headed back to my room “Aw, going to go cry now, weirdo.”

“It won’t hurt me, don’t matter if I fall from the sky because of you. You can’t hurt me.” I told her.

She was taken aback from what I said. But it was the truth. I’m not taking it any more.

I woke up the next morning with a smile on my face. I had today then tomorrow and I would soon be home. With people who really care about me.

It’s the day before I head home. Heather and Tony wasn’t even thinking of going easy on me. It was early in the morning when I was getting out of the shower drying my now above the shoulder hair. I looked into the mirror; my hair was now blue. Luckily most of it washed out, all but the under hair.

I can say that I will miss Nick; he’s been more then just a friend.

“What are you thinking about?” He asked.

As we lay on a blanket in the sand, looking over I say “You.”

“Really?” He smiled at me.

“About how I will miss you.” I knew I was blushing.

He just smiled.

“What?” I asked.

“Well, one you like me, two you sound like we’ll never talk.”

“Will we?”

“I hope.” He said; as he bent forward and kissed me.

It was evening; there were once again having a party. I pulled my hair up best I could; the underneath was still blue.

“What did you do to you hair now?” My father asked as I walked in to the kitchen. I just rolled my eyes as I didn’t want to explain.

It was so quite that you could hear the waves.

“I can’t believe you did that.” Someone said.

“That’s what she gets for taking Nick.”

“So you turned her organ, colored her clothes and hair…”

“Don’t forget Tony gave her a hair…” Heather walked in and stopped talking.

For the first time she was pale.

“Heather, you what?”

She tripped over her words. I couldn’t believe that this was happing.

“You lied to me and your mother. What were you thinking?”

I tried to sneak out but I bumped the stool.

“Quinn, stay.”

“Heather, go get your mother now.” He turned looking at me.

I knew by the look on he felt bad.

“I don’t want to hear it. I know you feel bad but I really don’t want to hear it.”

“We’ll talk later.” He said.

I headed to the beach.

“Hey.” Nick smiles.

“You want to hear something that you won’t believe?” I asked.

I went on telling him what just happened.

“Man, I wish I was there.”

“Yea’ but now my father wants to talk.”

“Can’t be that bad.” He said.

I didn’t say anything. ”By the way I’m leaving the same day you are.” He added.

“Don’t want to stay with her?” I playfully asked.

He chuckled “Who would?”

It’s now the day I get to head home. My father put my bags into the car as I wanted next to Nick.

“I’m going to miss you.” He said bumping into my shoulder.

“Same here.” I said tossing my arms around him.

“Thank you.” I whisper; if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have made it thee pass weeks.

“Your welcome, Wings.” He said. I went to walk away but he pulled me and kissed me.

As the car pulled away I turned and waved to Nick. We pulled around the corner when I got a text ‘miss you already.’

I didn’t see Heather or Tony so; I’m figuring they got sent home.

“Quinn, I’m sorry.” He said.

“I know.”

“But you don’t forgive me?”

“Maybe one day but not right now.”

“I’ll make it up to you.” Now it sounded as if he was speaking to himself.

I hugged my father goodbye then I boarded the plane. I guess everything I went though those weeks just shows me that I can make it. No matter what, I’m going to fly. I’ spreading my wings; fly high as the skyscrapers. I didn’t brake down, cry, or even sink to their leave.

I’m firing up on that runway called life I’m going somewhere with these wings.
