Life of a Soldier

Noël Lucky Chevalier was a soldier serving in Napoleons arm in the 1800s. This is his journey through several campaigns he fought.
This is my entry for the Historical Fiction Contest

1. (Introduction) August 15th, 1805

My name is Noël Lucky Chevalier. This is the first time I’ve ever been away from home, and to tell you the truth, it’s kind of scary. This is my first time at war, so I’m the lowest rank: a Soldat. It’s a good experience, but I never wanted to be here. My mom forced me. Chevalier means solider, so she says I’m obliged to become a solider, like my dad, his dad and the dad before that… it runs in the family.

My hair is rusty brown, and there’s a beard growing on my face. It feels rather funny. I’ve never had a beard before. I’m only 22 years old, one of the younger soldiers. My eyes are clear blue, like the water.  I’ve got a strong build; I’m not a wimp like I seemed to have described myself before.  I’m 5 feet, 9 inches tall.

I’ve got one child, Christian. He’s only 1 and half years old.  My wife, Mary, worries about me all the time. I just received a letter today. It said: Christian is getting so very big, I wish so very much that you could be here to help me raise our child. Stay safe. I pray every day that you will be safe….

As every day progresses, the battles get fiercer. I doubt I’ll come home, but I don’t dare tell Mary that.  That is why I am writing in this journal, so it may be brought to Christian at my death, so that he may know more about me.

It’s getting late, I should say bye now. I miss my wife and child dearly.

Greetings, Noël Chevalier.
