Chapter 8:

A/N: For the anon who asked about the quote and rescuing his crush from a school bully it’s mentioned in this chapter. When I first started out with this story I had no faith in it whatsoever and thought that no one was going to read it so to know people are is so lovely. This was one of my favourite chapters to write. Bit of a cliff-hanger, Sorry. Enjoy Chapter 8 of The Elephant and The Boat. Lots of love <3

They arrived back at Jenni`s flat about half an hour later. Her mum and brother each made their way into the house first with Tom and Jenni following behind.

Jenni was greeted with big cheers when she arrived. Her flat had been decorated with balloons, streamers and banners. Music blared from her iPod dock as her friends and family congratulated her on her graduation.

To think this was going to be the last time she was going to be in this flat, where she had lived for the past two years was odd. Come tomorrow she would be back at her mums, back at the house where she grew up. Back at the house where her and her Tommy grew up. She didn’t want to go back without him, it wouldn’t be the same and all these memories of their childhood would come back to her. Tom squeezed her hand as if he knew exactly what she was thinking because in truth he was thinking the same thing.

He didn’t want to be parted from her as much as she didn’t want to be parted from him. He longed to go back home with her, back to their childhood home, but alas they had both grown up and he had to be based in London with his busy schedule. With that an idea struck him.

Jenni took in all the praise realising that all the hard work had now paid off and she was free to do what she wanted. In truth she wanted to tell Tom how she felt, that she had never stopped loving him for all these years, but she didn’t. Instead she spent time celebrating with her friends and family, talking about the past three years and catching up with those family members she hadn’t seen for a while.

Tom looked on with a smile on his face. This was Jenni`s day and he didn’t want to be like a lost puppy and follow her around for the whole evening. He instead sat in a chair in the corner of her living room sipping on a glass of Jameson.

Jenni and Tom kept stealing odd glances and smiles at each other throughout the evening. Whenever Jenni went to go over and talk to Tom she would get distracted by her friends or family congratulating her.

“He keeps looking at you.” Lindsey whispered in her ear making her jump. She turned round from talking to her aunt to face her.

“I know.” just as she looked over at him they’re eyes connected and it was as though they were the only two in the room.

They were pulled out of their trance when her brother, Ben went and stood right infront of Tom blocking her view of her best friend. Rose came over and joined her and Lindsay a few minutes later as The Spice Girls `Stop Right Now` blasted through the speakers.

The girls squealed and sang and danced along to the track in the middle of Jenni`s living room. The living room soon turned into a dance floor when others began to dance along to the 90s classics. Doing the air guitar to Busted and Avril Lavigne and singing at the top of their lungs when Bon Jovi Living on a Prayer came on. True 90s kids right here.

Tom came and joined in for a few songs, dancing like a loon to Hips Don’t Lie which the girls thought was hilarious and singing at the top of his lungs to Friday I’m in Love by The Cure.

The tracks then turned more modern and clubbified with the likes of `Now You`re Gone,

The drinks and music continued to flow throughout the evening. A buffet was enjoyed aswell as a huge chocolate cake with melted dairy milk and white chocolate buttons scattered around it with Congratulations Jenni piped in brown icing.

Presents were also exchanged which she was also surprised about. It was like it was her birthday.

Tom couldn’t keep the smile off his face the whole entire evening. He was so proud of her. He hoped she would like the surprise he had planned for her near the end of the evening.

The night went on as the celebrations began to come to a close around half 11. Jenni couldn’t believe they had been partying that long. Some of her family and friends came to say goodbye to her but most stayed. Her aunt and uncle stayed which she wasn’t expecting; they would usually have left half way through.

Jenni looked around to see if she could see Tom but he was nowhere to be found. He wouldn’t have left without saying goodbye to her. He couldn’t have done. She went to go and look for him only for her arm to be grabbed by her mum.

“Where are you going honey?” Helen asked her.

“I.. I was going to go and see if I could find Tom he’s seemed to have disappeared.”

“Just wait a second”

“What, why?”

Suddenly Tom appeared out of nowhere coming into the living room with a guitar around his shoulder.

He stood in the middle of the room and got everyone’s attention.

“Hi everyone. I know some of you were just about to leave but if you wanted to stay and listen to this your welcome to. For those who don’t know, I’m Tom Hiddleston.”

Some of the girls in the room turned and giggled at the other.

“Yes, I’m an actor. I’ve been a few films including Thor and The Avengers but tonight isn’t about me. Far from it. Tonight is about Miss Jennifer Otto and her friends. I’ve known Jenni since she was seven when I rescued her from the school bullies. I, like most people of the 80s grew up watching Superman. As a child, when I first learned to dive into a swimming pool, I wasn’t diving; I was flying, like Superman. I used to dream of rescuing a girl I had a crush on from the school bullies. That girl turned out to be Jenni. I grew up with her from the age of seven to thirteen as it turned out I lived down the road from her.”

Jenni was looking right at him, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.

“We spent every waking moment together, doing everyday things you do growing up, going swimming, to the cinema, to the park, the zoo. Elephants will never be the same for me again now I’ve met you Jen. She made me watch Breakfast at Tiffany`s god knows how many times but I didn’t care as long as I was with her. It soon turned into our film and `Moon River` was our song.”

Jenni couldn’t tear her eyes from him. A smile on her face the whole entire time she was speaking, the smile she saved entirely for him, her Tommy, her best friend. She felt like she was seven again.

Tom kept his eyes on her as though she was the only person in the room as he continued.

“When I turned thirteen, the worst happened. I had to move away from the place I had grown up. Away from my best friend, away from my Jen who I had spent all of my time with for the past five years because my dad got a new job in Oxford. That was so hard on both of us, we both broke down that day. I left and we spoke everyday, then one day everything changed and we didn’t speak. It was mainly my fault but a day in early November my world fell apart. My parents were getting a divorce. Do you want to know the first person I rung when I found out? I rang my best friend because I knew that even though I hadn’t spoken to her for months on end she would still be there for me. She was. Anyway to save any more details I left again and I hadn’t seen her for ten years until a few months ago, thanks to my friend Dominic Cooper and the restaurant Jenni worked at we met again. We met again after ten years. She hadn’t changed one bit, she looked even more beautiful than she did all those years ago.”

Jenni blushed at Tom’s comment.

“As soon as I got back from filming in Detroit I went to the restaurant and found her and now here we are. There wasn’t a day during those years I was apart from her that I didn’t think of her, though. Everyday I thought of her and this song kept me going because I knew that I would see her again. I’m so sorry I left you all those years ago Jenni. It won’t happen it again. It can’t happen again. You mean far too much for me to ever let you go. I love you and this is for you”

Tom positioned his guitar around his body and began to play the familiar cords of Andy Williams Moon River. Their song.

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend, moon river, and me

(Moon river, wider than a mile)
(I'm crossin' you in style some day)
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after that same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend, moon river, and me

(Moon river, moon river)

He played and sung it perfectly. Once it was over everyone clapped and cheered their applause as Jenni wiped her tears away. She couldn’t believe he had done that for her. Her Tommy had given a speech and played their song to her. She didn’t even know he could play the guitar.

Jenni ran up to him throwing her arms round his neck sobbing into his chest. Tom rubbed her back and smoothed her hair just like he used to when she was upset. She sighed into the embrace. When her tears had subsided she said

“Oh, Tom. Tommy. Tommy Hiddleston. I love you that’s the loveliest thing anyone has ever done for me”

Tom smiled whispering in her ear. “Jen, I meant every single word I said up there. There wasn’t a moment I didn’t think about you. I love you. Come with me”

He took her hand leading her out to sit on the patio steps. Jenni`s flat was on the first floor so she had a perfect view of the garden.

They sat on the steps of the door looking out at the beautiful sunset that was setting over London. The sky was decorated with beautiful rays of red, yellow and orange which lit up Jenni`s face.

Jenni linked her arm through his and snuggled up to his shoulder. They sat in a content silence for a while before Tom took his arm out of hers and fiddled in the breast pocket of his suit jacket.

“Tommy what are you doing?”

In that moment Tom pulled a green box out of his pocket and presented it to Jenni.

“Your graduation gift”

“But Tom you already gave me a gift just by being here. I never expected you to give a speech or sing to me let alone give me a gift. I didn’t even know you could play the guitar in the first place.”

“I learnt at school and recently had to play again for a role so when I wasn’t filming I learnt how to play it so I could play it for you when I saw you again.”

They smiled at each other getting lost in each others eyes.

Tom broke the contact first placing his hand over the top of the box in his hand.

“Open it” he whispered. She done as she was told and was greeted with the most beautiful sight.

Inside the box was a long gold necklace with an elephant attached. Every detail of it was beautiful, the eyes, the ears, you could definitely tell what it was.

Jenni`s eyes watered with tears.

“Oh my god Tommy it’s so beautiful. Wherever did you find it?” she whispered stroking the elephant in her hand.

“I found it on my travels to India when I first started my career. I just had to buy it for you, it’s been in my top draw for years and there it would have stayed until I saw you again. I just knew I would see you again and I couldn’t leave it there. Then you invited me to your graduation and I thought it would be a perfect gift.”

“Oh Tommy” Jenni sighed. “I love it. I love you”

“I’m glad you like it darling. May I?” she nodded as he placed the necklace around her neck, his fingers lightly touching the collar of her dress in the process. Tom’s fingers lingered there trailing from the side of her neck to her throat. He stopped himself and reached down to hold the elephant in his hand placing a kiss on his forehead. Jenni did the same before lacing Tom’s fingers with hers. The elephant swung back onto her chest as Tom kissed her knuckles. Jenni`s eyes closed.

Their trance was interrupted by a few guests coming out to say their goodbyes and congratulations and thanking Tom, saying how sweet his serenade was. Jenni got up from her space on the porch letting go of Tom’s hand.

She returned to her space a few minutes later as the two friends sat on the porch for a while resumed in their previous position, with their arms linked and Jenni`s head rested on Tom’s shoulder and Tom’s on her forehead just taking in the view. Enjoying their contented silence.

Jenni broke it first.

“I’m going to miss this place. I can’t believe I have to leave my flat; the flat ive lived in for the past two years to go back to mums. Back to the house I grew up in without you.” she told him sadly.

“Why are you leaving? Why can’t you stay?”

“I can’t afford to keep the flat anymore and it would just be easier to go back with mum.”

It’s now or never Tom thought.

Just as he was about to ask her, more guests came out saying their goodbyes. Jenni decided it would probably be best to go back inside to save them all having to come back out.

Jenni got up to go back inside but Tom stopped her grabbing her wrist.

“Jen. Jenni. My Jenni. Move in with me!”
