Chapter 5:

A/N: Now, I understand that Jenni is twenty one which therefore makes Tom twenty three and that he hadn’t started his career then as he was originally still at RADA but for the purpose of the story and in order for it to follow on I’m going to say that Tom is way into his career to the point where he’s finished The Avengers. Hope you enjoy. Lots of love.

Tom was now living the dream. He was now classed as a professional actor and had been since starring as The God of Mischief in Thor back in 2009. It wasn’t until reprising his role in The Avengers last year that he begun to be classed as a Hollywood actor though.

He began by doing theatre, starring in productions of The Changeling, Cymbeline and Othello before landing his first film role straight out of RADA, a film called `Unrelated` directed by Joanna Hogg, in which he played rebellious teenager, Oakley and starred opposite his sister, Emma. After that he made a few minor television performances in the likes of Suburban Shootout, Return to Cranford and Wallander.

It was on the set of Wallander where Tom met Kenneth Branagh, an actor he always looked up to and who throughout the years had become a mentor to him. In theory, it was Ken he had to thank for his career, Jenni too. He often wondered what she was up to, if she ever fulfilled her dream of becoming a singer.

Tom and Ken met again a few years later in the theatre when they were both working on the play Ivanov. It was there that he found out that Ken was on about making Thor and asked Tom to audition for the lead.

He lost out to Aussie Chris Hemsworth but got asked to play Loki instead. Loki was the role that would start his career, Loki was the role his fans would love and relate to the most.

In the space of a week after landing the role of Loki he received a personal letter from Woody Allen asking him to come to Paris and play F.Scott Fitzgerald shooting for three weeks in the summer. He then received a phone call from Steven Spielberg, his hero, the genius who had created some of his all time favourite films, the posters of which he had on his bedroom wall growing up, when he grew up with Jenni. He missed her.

It was there in Paris that he wished Jenni was with him. He would loved to have shown her Paris. He still would. Instead, he spent the few weeks before with his co star Alison Pill who would play his wife Zelda, on top of the roof of the hotel they were staying at reading the real life letters Scott and Zelda wrote to each other in order to get into character. Tom also spent a lot of time just wondering around Paris, taking in the sights listening to an audio book of The Great Gatsby to get his American accent just right.

After filming wrapped on Thor and Midnight in Paris he began his training and research for War Horse where he would play Captain James Nicholls. It was there on the set of War Horse, that he not only met one of his lifelong heroes but also one of his closest friends, Benedict Cumberbatch.

Both Tom and Ben, along with Martin Freeman and a few other A-List celebrities including James McAvoy and George Clooney were currently sailing around an island just outside London on a posh cruise ship courtesy of Dominic Cooper who had just got engaged to his girlfriend.

Jenni never thought in a million years that she’d be waitressing on a posh cruise ship full of A-List celebrities she had only thought of meeting in her dreams, let alone serving them food and drink.

Dressed all in black, black shirt, skirt, tights and shoes, her brunette hair up in a high ponytail on top of her head she made her way round and through the boat making sure everyone was happy and enjoying the food, she was ofcourse working and her job was to make sure everyone liked the food so they could make bookings for other parties and make more people come to the restaurant she worked at.

She had to pinch herself everytime someone famous walked past her or thanked her for their drink. She wasn’t here to meet celebrities, she was here to work.

Tom mingled with the other guests and actors. He saw Dominic Cooper and Benedict talking from across the room and made his way over to join in the conversation bumping into a waitress making the canapés she was carrying flying all over the floor in the process.

She immediately bent down to retrieve them, placing them back on the tray so she could throw them in the bin when she got back to the kitchen. He bent down to help her.

“Oh my god, I’m such a tit, I’m so sorry”

“It’s fine, really not a problem, we have plenty more in the kitchen, not that many people are eating them anyway” she laughed a nervous laugh continuing to pick up the canapés. He laughed too, his ehehe. They’re hands lightly brushed against each others in the process. She felt like an electric current had run through her body. She daren’t look at him for fear her cheeks were red.

Once all the canapés had been picked up off the floor and she couldn’t find any other excuse to stay on the floor, she finally looked up into the most beautiful blue green eyes of the man who had knocked her down, yet been the gentleman and helped her. Any other man who would have knocked her down would just have walked away or not even apologised. He offered her his hand; she took it as he helped her up brushing down her clothes. This was just like déjàvu. Just like how she first met Tom. She couldn’t help the single tear that ran down her cheek thinking about him.

The man noticed and wiped the tear away with his thumb. She said she was fine and made a rush back to the kitchen before she made a fool of herself any more than she already had. She didn’t want to cry about him anymore, she had wasted enough time crying over him; it had been ten years for Christ sake. He had most likely forgotten about her.

Jenni put the canapés that had been on the floor into the bin before making her way to the loo to tidy herself up before going back into the kitchen and refilling the tray to take back round. She continued working making her way round the boat offering the canapés and taking drinks orders. She couldn’t wait for this night to be over.

Tom couldn’t stop thinking about the waitress he knocked over, he recognised her from somewhere, her brunette hair, her beautiful blue eyes. Why he automatically felt the need to wipe her tear away which cascaded down the cheek of a beautiful woman he didn’t know, he had no idea but he felt like he knew her, he wanted to take whatever pain she was feeling away.

The evening continued. Tom caught up with Dominic and Eddie as he hadn’t seen them since Eton. He excused himself half way through the night to get some air.

It was a beautiful evening outside, the moon and a few stars shining brightly over the calm sea. He took a few deep breaths, enjoying the fresh air on his face; the Guinness he had drunk a few hours prior was starting to sink in his body. He let his thoughts wonder to Jenni, he missed her at times and evenings like this.

Jenni continued her rounds making her way up on deck to see if anyone else wanted another drink or one of the canapés. Her hands were starting to ache now but she only had a few hours left before she could home and get into bed.

The deck was pretty quite apart from a few minor celebrities. She made her way around offering them glasses of champagne before getting to the balcony where a man dressed in a black blazer, trousers, white shirt and bow tie was leaning against the railing lost in thought. She couldn’t help but wonder what he was thinking about. She slowly made her way over to him clearing her throat to let him know she was there.

“Excuse me, sir I’m sorry to bother you but I wondered if you would like a glass of champagne or a canapé.”

Tom turned around to see the woman he knocked down earlier.

“Ah, we meet again.” She nodded. “Indeed we do.”

“Listen, I’m so sorry I knocked you down earlier I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

“It’s quite alright, really. No harm done. They’re a fresh tray of canapés if you wish to try one.” She giggled, “or maybe a glass of champagne if you aren’t hungry.” She offered. He took a canapé putting it in his mouth and chewing. He swallowed a few minutes later nodding his approval.

“These are good. Did you make them?” she snorted. “I’m sorry to disappoint you but I’m afraid not.” He laughed.

“I’m far from disappointed darling” she smiled going to walk away and go back inside. She was stopped by an arm on her wrist. She turned to see the man looking at her. “Would you mind staying and keeping me company for a little while? You’ve been on your feet, carrying that tray all night surely you deserve a break? Why don’t you put it down and come and talk with me a while?” she smiled, nodding her head.

He took the tray from her hand and placed it on a table near by so she could pick it up when she returned inside.

She learnt against the railing looking out to see, just like he had done a few minutes prior. He joined her a few minutes later doing the same. They were silent for a while, enjoying the evening. He broke the silence a little while later.

“So, how come a beautiful young woman like you is stuck waitressing on a boat when you can do anything you want to do?”

“To pay the rent. I’m in my final year of studying Vocals to become a singer. I sing in pubs and clubs in my spare time but I work in a restaurant which supplied the food for tonight”

“I bet you have a great voice”. She blushed at his comment, continuing to look out at sea. She plucked up the courage a few minutes later to look at him. He was beautiful in the moonlight, his blue eyes sparkling, his hair a blondy brown on his head, a few loose curls here and there. She couldn’t help but think how handsome he looked in a suit either. He saw she was looking at her and smiled a toothy grin that reached his eyes.

“So, what do you do?” she asked suspecting the answer to be like any of the others on this boat.”

“I’m an actor” Obvious. She was on a boat full of celebrities, ofcourse he was an actor, like everyone other person on this boat. Silly woman.

“Anything I may have seen you in?”

“I was in Thor and The Avengers, War Horse, Midnight in Paris?” she thought she recognised him. Midnight in Paris, she remembered seeing that at the cinema. Fitzgerald had always been one of her favourite authors.

“Thor and The Avengers, I’m afraid to say I haven’t seen but I believe I may have seen you in Midnight in Paris. You were Fitzgerald weren’t you?”

“Yes, M`am” she smiled.

“You know, I used to have a friend called Tom who wanted to be an actor. He used to have posters of Jurassic Park in his room. That must have been amazing to work with Steven Spielberg.”

“It was a real honour, one of the films I’m most proud of. You saying that you’re studying Vocals to become a singer I used to, or hopefully still do have a friend called Jenni who always wanted to be a singer. I haven’t spoken to her in ten years. We used to put on shows for our parents. I went to Eton when I was thirteen and left her behind, my best friend. I may not have seen her for ten years but there isn’t a day I don’t think about her.”

“I bet the feelings mutual. He gave me a cuddly elephant before he left saying he would never forget me” her eyes started to fill with tears.

“He never did” he said in almost a whisper. She looked at him just as he looked at her. He pulled her to him into an embrace the tears cascading down her face.

“Oh, Tom, Tommy” she breathed into his shirt.

“Jenni. Jen” he muttered to the top of her head.

“Ive missed you so much.”

“I’ve missed you too, Jen, I’m so sorry, for everything.”

“It’s okay. It’s in the past. I just can’t believe you’re here.”

The friends continued to hug tighter before they were interrupted by Jenni`s friend, Sarah telling her she had to get back to work. Earlier, she would have wanted nothing more than to get back to work because the quicker she got back to work, the quicker she could go home. But now, since seeing Tom and being back in his arms it was as though time had stopped, as though they were young again.

Jenni reluctantly pulled away from his embrace giving him a kiss on the cheek before going back inside.

Tom stood on the balcony for a while taking in the fact that he’d just been reunited with his best friend. He didn’t get her number, he needed her number, he couldn’t loose her again.

He ran back inside to try and find her and ran straight into Benedict.

“Mate, what’s the rush?”

“My best friend, Ben, I’ve just seen my best friend who I haven’t seen in ten years. Ive already lost her once I can’t loose her again. I need to find her and get her number, stay in contact with her.”

He rushed passed Ben to the kitchen where she thought she would be. She wasn’t there. Where was she?

As soon as Jenni made her way back down into the party Sarah grabbed her by the arm pulling her into the toilets demanding to know who the hot actor she was talking to was. She simply replied with “Tom. Tom Hiddleston. My best friend.” He was still her best friend. She had missed him so much.

She didn’t have time to think about him for the rest of the evening as as soon as they were back on land she had to help clear up. Sarah handed out business cards to everyone on their way off the boat telling them to tell their friends about the food and to pop by the restaurant whenever they were in town.

Jenni finally cleared up and was off the boat and back at her flat by 2am. It was there that she let her thoughts wonder back to the evening. She had just been reunited with her best friend. Her Tommy who she hadn’t seen in ten years and she was stupid enough not to get his number, he was bound to have deleted her number or changed his phone, just like she had.

She needed to see him, she needed him back in her life, and she couldn’t go another ten years without him she just couldn’t. Jenni had no idea how to get in contact with him, especially as he was now a famous actor. She was just going to have to wait until he got in contact with her. If he ever did. She really hoped he did, she needed her best friend.

That night she took Ellie back out from the bottom draw of her bedside table. She put her away one night when she got upset after watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s and couldn’t bare to look at her because all she thought about was Tom. She was ready to face those demons again, after seeing him again this evening she could relive those memories. She went to bed that night hugging Ellie as though she was hugging Tom. She slept better than she had in years.

Tom had no luck in finding Jenni after the party as Ben rushed him off the boat to share a taxi with him. He managed to pick up one of the business cards given to him by one of the other waitresses with the name and address of restaurant she worked at so he would just have to go and visit her there. He couldn’t loose her again. Ten years was far too long to go without her best friend and seeing her again tonight, he needed her back in his life. He went to bed that night dreaming of what the future bought for him and his Jen.
