Chapter 14:

A/N: OTP Challenge. Day 6- Wearing each others clothes.

Jenni didn’t realise how big the house actually was until Tom wasn’t in it. It felt extremely big and empty without him. She missed him when he was away for a day but now he was away for a few weeks it felt horrible. It was as though he had left her all over again. Tom was currently away in California at D20 talking about The Pirate Fairy and ofcourse Thor: The Dark World.

“I wish you didn’t have to go, the house will be too big without you” she had complained as she stood in her best friend’s room watching him pack.

“You know you’re always welcome to come with me, Jen.” She smiled at her best friend as she passed him his famous white shirt that she and his fangirls liked on him so much.

“You have no idea how I wish I could. Ive become so accustomed to your company recently but my boss won’t allow me the two weeks off. Maybe some other time” she frowned walking over to him, hugging him around his waist, burying her face in the crook where his shoulder and neck met.

“I’ll miss you” she breathed into his skin.

“And I you, Jen” he replied kissing her forehead. “Two weeks will fly by before you know it.

With that he had given her one last squeeze and planted another kiss on her forehead before reluctantly pulling away from the warmth of her petite frame, grabbing his suitcase and headed out the door.

She wished she had gone with him. Instead, she was stuck at home without anyone for company accept Ellie, her cuddly elephant Tom had given her and his many books and DVDs. It was going to be a lonely two weeks without him.

She finished her afternoon shift at the restaurant before inviting Rose and Lindsay round for the evening. They planned on having a girly evening in with romantic comedies and a bottle of wine, but when Lindsay turned up dressed in a red sparkly dress and insisted they go to a new club that was opening in Central London Jenni knew she didn’t have a choice.

Jenni would rather have preferred an evening in, moping over the fact that Tom wasn’t there. But instead she got dressed up in a baby pink dress and met Lindsay at the bottom of the stairs before hailing a cab to go and pick up Rose and drive them to the club.

Rose came down the stairs of her flat dressed in a pair of dark blue jeans and Armani t shirt.

“I thought we were having a girly evening round yours, Jen. I bought Mean Girls” she asked approaching the taxi.

“There was apparently a change of plan I didn’t know about as Lindsay here came dressed like this to my house.” Jenni replied pointing at Lindsay.

“Oh come on girls, it’ll be fun, don’t be such spoilsports.” Rose sighed. “Right suppose I better go change my top then, make myself look a bit more decent.”

Rose came back a few minutes later, still in her pair of jeans but instead of her Armani t shirt she had changed into a high neck leopard print top.

“Get in bitch, we’re going clubbing. There, you wanted a Mean Girls quote.” She laughed. The girls weren’t amused to say the least. They weren’t really the clubbing type, they much enjoyed dancing around in one of their livings rooms than in big groups of people, in a club with couples grinding against each other and drunk guys trying to get laid.

Tom disliked the idea of being away from Jenni as much as she disliked being away from him.

He arrived in California around midday, arriving at his hotel and unpacking his belongings including The Cure t shirt of Jenni`s she knew she sometimes slept in. It was the closest he was going to get to her for the next few weeks and the smell of her on the t shirt would hopefully be enough to get him through it.

He had left a couple of his shirts in his wardrobe in hope that she would take one and sleep in it to have his smell on her when she slept too but he doubted it very much.

Tom changed into a pair of black dress trousers, his favourite white shirt of the moment adding his new grey waistcoat over the top before putting on his brown dress shoes.

Luke, his friend and publicist knocked on his hotel room a few moments later checking he was ready, running him through his schedule for the weekend before leading him to the hotel where the conference was being held.

Today consisted of press for Tinkerbell: The Pirate Fairy whereas tomorrow would be dedicated to Thor: The Dark World with a press conference.

They arrived at the venue about half an hour later where Tom was welcomed on stage to tremendous applause along with his co star Christina Hendricks. In an interview for BAFTA a few months back he was asked about a film that had inspired him to become an actor, his answer being The Jungle Book.

It was clear by the amount of people that cheered for him to sing The Bare Necessities how many people had seen the interview.

He obliged the audience by singing the chorus. In that moment though, all he could think about was Jenni and how they had watched and sang along to the film growing up.

The two friends sat on the sofa in Jenni`s living room, a bowl of popcorn in the middle of them. They were having one of their DVD days as they often did. Today it was a Disney marathon in preparation for the trip they were taking to Disneyland Paris next week during half term. They had already watched and sang along to Tarzan and Phil Collins `You’ll Be In My Heart` and The Lion King and Elton John’s `Can You Feel The Love Tonight`. They were now sat watching The Jungle Book and singing along with Baloo to `The Bare Necessities`.

Look for the Bare Necessities

The simple Bare Necessities

Forget about your worries and your strife

I mean the bare necessities
Old Mother Nature’s recipes
That brings the bare necessities of life

Wherever I wander, wherever I roam
I couldn’t be fonder of my big home
The bees are buzzin’ in the tree
To make some honey just for me
When you look under the rocks and plants
And take a glance at the fancy ants
Then maybe try a few

The bare necessities of life will come to you
They’ll come to you!

Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
That’s why a bear can rest at ease
With just the bare necessities of life

“I cant believe you’d never seen this before” Tom exclaimed. The film had been paused once the song had finished for a tea and toilet break.

“I’m not sure why I hadn’t if im honest. Its such a great film” Jenni replied handing Tom his tea before pressing play again.

“I’ve decided I’m going to sit down with anyone who hasn’t watched it because it’s that good.”

“That’s a good plan. Now Shh and let me watch the rest of it”

“Yes Maam” he replied giving her a salute before taking a sip of his tea and watching the rest of the film

Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
Old Mother Nature’s recipes
That brings the bare necessities of life

As soon as Tom finished the last verse and the crowd erupted into applause he couldn’t help the smile that appeared on his face at both the crowd’s reaction and the memory of growing up watching it with his Jenni. He couldn’t help but wonder what she was doing.

Jenni wanted to be back at home as soon as she stepped foot in the club. She wasn’t in the mood for clubbing, not even to dance which was unusual. She would rather have been at home with a good book or crappy TV.

She thought she may aswell get used to enjoying herself as she wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon, not by the way Lindsay was flirting with the bar tender. They couldn’t take her anywhere.

The girls enjoyed a few drinks and dances before they decided to take their leave at midnight, much to Lindsay’s disappointment.

Jenni arrived back at the empty house around half an hour later. She tried to stay out aslong as possible because she didn’t want to go home and find her Tommy not there but she could barely keep her eyes open.

Arriving back at the flat a feeling of loneliness and misery washed over her. She missed him and he hadn’t even been away twenty four hours. She was apparently much stronger when she was younger than she was now. She didn’t realise how much she relied on him. Was that a good thing or a bad thing?

She kicked off her shoes in the hallway before going into the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea. With the tea made she headed up the stairs to get ready for bed. Instead of going into her room at the top of the stairs however, she turned left and made her way down the landing to Tom’s room.

Jenni turned the knob of the door and instantly felt more at home. His room was as tidy as it had been when he left it this morning. She didn’t know how he done it, hers would have been a right mess if she was going on holiday.

She placed her cup of tea on his bedside table before going over to his wardrobe hoping that he had left one of his shirts in there so she could sleep in it to feel and have his scent on her when she slept.

To her luck he had. She smiled running her hands over the many shirts and t shirts in his wardrobe before choosing one of his dark blue shirts. She unzipped the back of her pink dress, laying it on the end of the bed before slipping it on. As soon as she put the shirt on she instantly relaxed bringing it to her nose and smelling it. It was clean but still had the faint smell of his Armani aftershave which she loved.

Jenni went back to her room retrieving her, well his book she had knicked from his study and Ellie the elephant from under the covers. She realised then that her Cure t shirt she had bought from their concert was missing. Odd. She remembered going to their concert during college in hopes of being reunited with her best friend. It didn’t happen but it was still a great night, the t shirt quickly becoming one of her favourites.

Tom finished his afternoon of press going back to his hotel for a shower and nap before going out to a party. He didn’t particularly fancy going out but according to Luke he had to.

He arrived back at his hotel and jumped in the shower, letting the water relax his muscles as he let his thoughts wander to what he wanted to do once D20 was over. He smiled as an idea appeared in his head. He soon dismissed it. He would plan it out later. Tom got out of the shower wrapping a towel around his waist before pouring himself a glass of Jameson and changing into Jenni`s Cure t shirt.

As soon as he put it on he immediately felt better. Her smell surrounded him. The smell of strawberry shampoo and her perfume. She must have slept in it last night especially as he took it from under Ellie this morning. He missed her and wished he had told her how he felt before he left.

Tom thought about calling her to tell her but then he realised that that would make him a coward and he would rather tell her face to face. Thoughts of his best friend came into his mind as he fell into a content sleep.

* * *

Jenni was now laying in Tom`s bed, his book placed on the bedside table. She had read for a bit but her mind had soon wandered back to Tom and a few months ago when he offered her his leather jacket in the rain.

To celebrate Jenni moving in with him Tom had taken her for a night out in London.

They had enjoyed a great night going to Garfunkel’s for dinner and then to the theatre to see Matilda, one of Jenni`s favourite films growing up. They ended up laughing until they were crying thanks to Tim Minchin’s dialague and songs.

By the time they came out of the theatre it was putting it down with rain. Tom being the practical person he was had bought his trusty leather jacket, unlike Jenni who was dressed in the blue dress she wore to her graduation.

Tom being the gentleman that he was offered her his jacket.

“But you’ll get wet” she had protested.

“I don’t care. I’ll get wet. I don’t want you to get a cold”

She accepted it after many a stern look from Tom.

As soon as he slipped it round her shoulders she felt like she had gone to heaven. The smell of him mixed with leather and then having his big warm hand in hers was too much.

She wished she could just kiss him and get away with it. She always liked the idea of kissing someone or being kissed in the rain, just like at the end of Breakfast at Tiffanys. Alas she didn’t, instead she rested her cheek in the crook of his neck and shoulder as they walked back to the house.

Now would have been the perfect time to tell Jenni how Tom felt about her .Just like the end of Breakfast at Tiffany`s when she goes looking for cat. He always wanted to kiss her in the rain. Why wasn’t he as brave as he was on screen? Being able to admit his feelings just like that. Silly man. Soon.

“Thankyou Tommy”

“You’re welcome Jen. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I love you”

I love you, I love you, I love you. That was the last thing she heard in her mind before she drifted into the world of dreams dressed in her best friends shirt, in his bed. She only wished he meant it as more than a friend.
