Off Limits

Off limits: that's exactly what she is. Ellie is the sister of one of my best mates, Louis, who happens to like to take the role of being the protective older brother. But if anything, she's one of the easiest people to talk to. I can tell her anything, except for the fact that I really like her. But if I were to even attempt to go out with her, Louis would kill me. So here's my predicament: I wish I could have her, but I can't.

3. Chapter 3

Thank God today was Friday! The week had seemed long enough for me, probably because I had just gotten back from holiday. After a week of just laying around and soaking up the sun, you get lazy, sad to say.

"Ellie! We gotta go in five minutes!" Louis called to me from downstairs. He was notorious for being ready ahead of time, unlike me, who was always rushing out the door without having any breakfast usually.

"Yeah, I'll be down in a minute!"

I pulled on my black socks and adjusted my navy blue blazer, making sure it was straight, along with my tie, which I wore loosely. I searched around for my flats, having no luck at all.

"Louis! Have you-" I turned to my doorway to see my brother holding the shoes in his hand, dangling them up high.

"Yes I've seen your flats. Now let’s go. I don't want to be tardy," He said, tossing them to me. I slipped them on, feeling the familiar feel of them. "Do you have everything in your duffel?" He asked while picking it up from the ground.

"Yes, I think so."

"Good, and your backpack?"

"Yes Louis..."

"Do know where you purse is?"

I rolled my eyes, getting annoyed by his double checking. He did it almost every day to me, like I was an eight year old, getting ready for her first day of school of the year, "Yes, it's on my shoulder right now."

"Okay, then why are you standing around? Let's go!"

I followed him out the door, ignoring the urge to fire something back at him, but I did make a face at him. He had the tendency to treat me like a child every once in a while, and it got quite annoying. I was in my second to last year of high school, I should be okay by now, right?

I don't know why Louis always insisted that we were going to be late every day, because we always showed up about twenty minutes before the first bell would even ring. He probably just wanted to go be Mr. Popular, like always. He only had a couple more months here, being in his last year and all.

I stepped out of Louis's car, walking into school right away with him, but we separated once we got inside; him wanting to go chat with some people, and me, wanting to see if I could find Hayley.

Hayley was my best friend, she always had been. We met in daycare and it seemed to just go from there. We had similar personalities but looked almost like complete opposites. She had brown hair, and I had blonde. She could never seem to tan, though I could easily, despite the common English weather. She was short, while I seemed to tower over her in some sense, although I was basically of average height. But we did almost have the same dark blue eyes.

You can imagine how hard it might've been to find her, based on how tiny she was. But it didn't take too long, because I could always rely on finding her talking to people in our year next to her locker, being social and all.

"Hi!" I said cheerfully, despite my hurried morning with Louis.

She smiled to me, "Hey! Did you just get here?"

"Yup, thanks to Louis." I said, rolling my eyeballs right away, getting her to understand my frustration. We walked away from her locker over to mine to talk like we usually did.

"Babying you again?"

I nodded my head, turning away to put some books in my metal compartment, "Like always. He can be awesome most of the time. But dear God, he acts like I'm his child, you know?"

Hayley tried to hide her smile when I looked back at her, but she couldn't very well, "I think it's cute, Ellie!"

"Oh come on Hay!"

I gave her a look, raising an eyebrow. She knew how independent I liked to be.

She shrugged her shoulders, "I'd like to have an older brother that liked to watch out for me and stuff too..."

"But you do."

She raised a finger, being her over-the-top self, "Umm technically not! I was born eight minutes before him!"

"Oh wow, that is quite the time difference." I said sarcastically.

"Where is your twin brother anyway? I didn't see him when I walked in." I asked.

"Oh! He had a chiropractor appointment. Remember when he pulled that leg muscle?" She reminded me.

"Oh yeah! I remember when I pulled that one, it hurt so bad!" Last year, during just a simple practice routine at dance class, I pulled one of my upper leg muscles. I had to rest it for over a week, which really upset me, because it slowed me down.

She nodded her head, "Anyway, he's working on that because it started to act up again."

The bell rang before we could continue with our conversation, forcing us to go separate ways to our different homerooms. But I reminded her to save me a spot at lunch, even though she always did anyway. The fact that she was my absolute best friend and I didn't have any classes with her for the first half of the day pretty much gutted us when we found out our schedules at the beginning of the year. But we only had about two months left, so we were getting over it.

I stepped into my homeroom and immediately spotted Niall, waiting for me with an open seat right behind him. He looked good this morning, sporting messy hair.

Tapping his pen on the desk, "Good morning." He greeted me, as I sat my backpack on the floor next to my desk. He flashed me one of his smiles, causing me to smile back.

"Why didn't you come down and play Call of Duty with us last night? I could've used a partner." He explained, almost showing me a pout on his face.

"I actually went to sleep as soon as I finished my homework last night."

He smirked at first, but it eventually grew into a huge grin, "Yeah, I know. I saw you sleeping when I came up to get you."

I raised my eyebrows, "Were you creeping on me while I slept Horan?"

He chuckled, "Well yeah of course! I do it to you all of the time." He reached his hand to my cheek and patted it lightly, making him laugh even more.

I hit his arm, but joined in with his laughter, it being contagious and all.

He stopped eventually, "Why've you been so tired lately?"

I shrugged, "I don't know. Probably stress." I said nonchalantly. Between homework, dancing, student council, journalism, studying, and some of the clubs I was involved in, it was really hard to find any time to relax. Sleep was always the best thing in the world after a long, tiring day.

"Yeah, you seriously need to drop one of your many clubs."

"No! I can't do-"

"Okay, okay, everyone be quiet please," Mr. Garrow said loudly over everyone. We knew to shut our mouths when he talked. "Roll call. Allen?"

It was only noon and I already had forty-eight maths problems, making it not the best day ever. But once again, thank God it was Friday.

Hayley was waiting for me at our usual spot with some of my other friends, people like Luke and Nicole. But with our school, we seemed to switch it up a bit at times, with people sitting at different spots with different people once in a while, so it wasn't too weird to see Liam and Niall sitting there as well, even though they normally sat with Louis, Zayn, Harry, and some of their other friends.

I set my tray down on the table, but not in the happiest way, which caused some looks to come to me from the people already sat down next to me, "You okay?" Liam asked.

"Yeah, I just have loads of maths homework." I grumbled while messing with my carrots.

He nodded, "Yeah, Harry and I are not very happy with that situation either."

"Wait, how many do you guys have?" Hayley asked.

"A total of forty-eight." I sighed, being a little over dramatic about the entire thing, but I honestly didn't care.

Hayley nodded, but her eyes seemed to catch something behind me, "Well guess who's back from the chiropractor."

I smiled, "Your twin?"

She nodded her head, gesturing for me to turn around. I turned, seeing Jared right behind me. He wasn’t looking at me, his make-up-slip instead. But when I stood up to hug him, my boyfriend’s face lit up.
