Off Limits

Off limits: that's exactly what she is. Ellie is the sister of one of my best mates, Louis, who happens to like to take the role of being the protective older brother. But if anything, she's one of the easiest people to talk to. I can tell her anything, except for the fact that I really like her. But if I were to even attempt to go out with her, Louis would kill me. So here's my predicament: I wish I could have her, but I can't.

1. Chapter 1

I never thought I would be living in England. Though Ireland was just a short flight away, it was unexpected. I came here almost three years ago, right in the middle of the school year, because my parent’s company moved over here.

At first, I was a little worried about the move. I would have to get new friends, leaving my own behind. But I made quick friends with four other guys after I joined the football team right away.

Liam, Zayn, Harry, and Louis. They were all really cool. Now, we’re all like brothers, even though I’ve known them for almost three years. Actually on the first day with them, Louis invited me over to his house with everyone after practice, which is what we do every day now, like it’s routine.

I met Louis's younger sister, Ellie, before I even met him. It was a strange encounter to be honest. It was my first week in Doncaster, and I hadn't really gotten the feel of it quite yet. So during the first couple of days, I would walk around and try to explore a little bit.

I walked through the park that was near my new home, looking at the trees and the kids playing on the playground and such -- nothing special whatsoever. But as I walked on the pathway, I noticed someone sitting up in a tree. She was writing stuff in her notebook, that is, until she dropped her pencil. When I noticed that she did, I jogged just a couple of steps over to it to grab it.

"You need this?" I asked up to her.

"Yeah, kinda. Can you hand it up to me?" She called back, shifting her weight so she could see me better.

Looking at how high up she was, it wasn't possible to just "hand it up to her." So trying to be nice and a little flirty with the blonde girl way up high, I decided to climb up without saying anything.

I didn't get to see her expression until I finally got up there, but she was smiling when I reached her. Up close I could see that her smile was actually perfect and her blue eyes were dark, but they were bright at the same time, "Thanks..."

"Niall, my name's Niall." I said quickly, handing her the pencil.

"Well thank you Niall. I really didn't want to climb all of the way down to get it. Oh, my name's Ellie by the way."

I smiled back, "I'll see you around Ellie."

"Wait, just curious, but you sound like you're from Ireland. What are you doing in Doncaster?"

"What are you doing up in a tree?" I asked with a small smirk.

She shrugged, "I don't know, I just like it up here."

I noticed how uncomfortable I was up in the tree. Not mentally, but physically. My body was starting to hurt. She, on the other hand, looked perfectly content and graceful based on her position.

It wasn't until a week later when I found out she was Louis's sister. I had seen her in the hallways at school, making eye contact with her a few times, but I never knew until I went to Louis house and found out that she actually lived there as well. But she acted like one of the boys, fitting in really well. Though she let us boys do our own thing about half of the time, she would occasionally come down into the basement to play video games with us.

But I learned right away that she was “off limits,” which is exactly what the other boys said to me. Louis didn’t tell me directly, but I could tell he was a protective older brother. But I guess the other guys saw how good of friends I was with Ellie, which is why the confronted me.So I kept my distance, just acting like a good friend.

We opened up to each other more and more as time went on, being really good listeners for one another. And if I ever wanted to find her when she wasn't at home on the weekends, it was almost guaranteed that I could find her at that tree in the park, the same one, on the same branch, every time. But she would even talk to me about her boyfriend, Jared, from time to time, showing how trusting she was of me.

Yes, that was another reason I kept away from liking her like that, because she had a boyfriend. But again, we’re now really good friends. But I will admit, we do flirt a bit, not intentionally. But the second we do in Louis’s presence, he gives us this…look, and we stop immediately. So now I treat it like I see her as a sister, if anything.

I hopped into Louis’s black suburban, ready to head over to his house with Liam and Zayn, Harry would be driving over later, being held up after practice for talking back to coach. I don’t even remember what he said, but he had to stay back to do run some sprints.

We had to pick Ellie up on the way at the dance studio like we usually did. We were at first waiting for Harry, but he told us to go on ahead, not to worry about him. Our coach was strict at times, but he was a pretty cool guy.

“You still haven’t gotten your heating fixed?” I groaned, feeling how chilly it was in the car.

“I’ve been in Florida for the past week, mate. I haven’t had time to bring it in.” Yes, Louis, Ellie, and their parents went to Florida for holiday, something I envied, wanting to go to Universal Resort for the roller coasters.

Zayn sat in the front, with Liam and I in the back, shivering at first. But we eventually adjusted to the temperature. It was the beginning of April right now, so it wasn’t exactly the kind of weather where you were able to walk around without a coat.

Half way to the studio, my phone started going off. I smiled when I saw it was Ellie, probably wondering where we were at, running late and all, “Hi!” I exclaimed.

“Are you with Louis?” She asked right away, not bothering to say “hi” back.

“I did say ‘hi’ to you, you know.”

She huffed her breath in frustration, “Hi Niall, how are you?”

“I’m good. How are you?”

I could just see her rolling her eyes, “Cold. It’s cold outside and you guys were supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago.”

“Decided not to bring a coat today?"

“It’s my legs that are cold.” She stated.

I chuckled, knowing that she would be wearing her tights, “Haven’t you ever heard of joggers?”

“Just get here! The studio is already locked so I can’t wait in there.”

“Alright, alright, El, we’ll be there soon."

“’Kay, bye Niall.”

“Louis! Your sister is getting impatient.” I said, hitting his back multiple times.

“We’ll blame Harry.” Liam suggested, popping his head up from his mobile.

“Agreed.” Zayn concluded.

We pulled up to the mirror filled studio minutes later, seeing Ellie stretching out a leg behind her back, raising it above her head. Louis honked his horn, startling her to stop what she was doing to turn around. She grabbed her duffel bag that was sitting on a stone bench next to her, and jumped into the car.

“It’s about time!” She breathed.

“It’s Harry’s fault, so blame him.” Zayn said, turning his head to look back at her.

“What happened?”

“He muttered that coach should get off his arse and run sprints before we had to, and coach heard.” He explained. You see, coach didn’t exactly look like he was very…in shape.

“Good lord.” She laughed.

The rest of the ride was pretty much quiet, besides the sound of the radio going through the car. I looked over to Ellie, who held her gaze through the window. She took off her leather jacket, only to cover her legs. I didn’t understand her reasoning, because her arms were now cold.

Leaving her arms exposed, I noticed how she had obtained a tan while she was gone. I had missed her while she was gone, not being able to talk to her face to face, only through calling her and messaging on Facebook.

Anyway, she was shivering now. So, almost out of instinct, I pulled her close to me by putting an arm around her to rub her arm with my hand, trying to cause friction. “You really need to invest in some joggers.” I murmured into her ear.

She shook her head, smiling. She looked up, “Funny,” She whispered. “And thanks.”

We pulled up to the house, with Louis wanting to back his car into the parkway. He turned around to see where he was going, noticing my arm around Ellie. He glanced at us for maybe less than a second, raising his eyebrows, but it was long enough to make me back off.

I removed the arm causally, acting like I had to scratch my head. But she noticed Louis’s face, moving away as well, closer to the door.

Just everything about the situation annoyed me. She had a boyfriend and she was one of my best-friends' younger sister. This really sucked.
