24. Karma's A Bitch

The boys didn't look too happy when I arrived at their house. Who could blame them? I'd just reunited two broken people and then had sex with him, making everything a whole lot more intimate than it should've been. I had expected glares of disapproval and rolling eyes, but I didn't expect Kayleb to be standing there with them, looking just as pissed off.

"Ruby, we need to talk. Now."

I wrestled away the voice in my head that teased his words and recognised his voice, not as the lovely-best-friend-who-cuddles-up-to-me-when-I'm-pissed kind of guy, but as the I'm-about-to-kill-you-then-throw-your-body-into-the-sea kind of guy.

And it scared the hell out of me.

I knew, despite the fact he was my best friend, that Kayleb puts his telepath standards far higher than his human ones.

Now, standing a metre away, he was six foot of angry male, and I was the lamb about to be slaughtered. So much for friendly love.

I let of Harry's hand - which was starting to sweat a little bit - and followed Kayleb outside, standing behind him on the patio.

"So, what did you want t-"

"Shut up. You know you have to wait until I've addressed you before you begin speaking. As for why I called you out here - He wants to see you."

Heart in my mouth, I grasped for an answer, anything. But nothing came.

Like every species, we have a leader. Not a nice one. He goes by the title 'Gabriel'. Because he was the most powerful telepath, he was to be respected and if anybody were to disrespect him then they would be punished severely. Either that, or plausible death - pick one.

"Almost half a year a go, you were supposed to kill a wicked telepath. But then you met Harry, who let you get away with it and distract you from fulfilling your duties as one of Gabriel's telepaths. Since then, Gabriel has assumed you were simply covering your tracks, not skiving off with a stupid human."

I fought back the urge to slap him, attempting to keep the thought from blossoming in my mind so that Kayleb wouldn't read the thoughts. I would probably get a slap in return if I did. Telepaths were people without mercy - without humanity. So he wouldn't think twice about hitting me back, would he? As my best friend, I hoped not. I honestly hoped that his position as my best friend would mean more to him than his position in the community of telepaths.

"Now, we're going to see Gabriel down near the London Bridge at nine-thirty."

"At night?" My voice was small.

"Yes. Now, you're excused."

I looked at his stern expression, his blue eyes cold. I turned away.

Then I was pulled towards a warm, solid body, arms around me.

"Oh Rubes, don't do that to me."

This was Kayleb - wild mood swings and completely fucking confusing. My head hurt trying to decipher which mood was really his own.

He kissed my forehead.

"I'm still your best friend aren't I?" He looked at me with his earnest blue eyes and I crumbled.

"Of course you are."

Then I hugged him tighter, hoping desperately that it wouldn't be the last hug I'd ever give to him.

Why did everything sound like I was saying goodbye?

Every moment, lost to this anguish I was living in.

But there was hope.

And Harry was my hope.

Harry's P.O.V:

Kayleb meandered back into the living room, his face anxious.

"Where's Ruby?" I asked, trying to keep a lid on my temper. Usually, if any girlfriend I had didn't come back inside, I'd shrug and go fix something to eat. Not with Ruby. Every second was dangerous. Every disappearance sent my heart racing wildly.

"It's none of your business." Kayleb hissed, storming past me. I grabbed the back of his collar and slammed him to the floor, punching him hard. He flinched, closing his eyes.

"Harry!" Liam yelled, watching as Kayleb sent a glass bowl flying at me. I ducked, slapping him harder.

"Where is she?!" I cried, kicking him in the stomach.

Arms looped through mine and pulled me back, sitting me down on the couch. I had blood on my knuckles.

Kayleb got his, spitting blood onto the carpet. He looked haunted - like he was just as upset Ruby was gone.

"She's gone to see our leader. He needs to know where she is and what she's been doing. If he finds out she's in love with you, he'll kill her."

I should've been expecting that, considering the situation, but I couldn't hide the shock I was feeling.

"What's wrong with her loving me?" I snarled.

Kayleb seemed even more pissed off than usual .

"Because, human, she has a life other than you. And it's your fault she never killed the guy that night. If she had, she would be fine right now. Her brother wouldn't be dead either."

I leapt up from the couch.

"Where is she?" I asked urgently. Kayleb pursed his lips.

"Like I'd tell you."

I clenched my hand into a fist and he took a step back.

"She'll be on her way to the London Bridge at nine o' clock. Until then, she'll be hanging about in London."

Everything we had was hanging by a thread - such a breakable thing.

I sat down again and the boys joined me. Now all I had to do was wait.

A.N: Sorry it's so short guys, but I promise I'll update again tomorrow. I'm a bit busy today :/ Well, hope you enjoyed this :) Tell me what you think down in the comments. Too dramatic? Too far-fetched? Too last-minute? Tell me what you think. Much love, Patch xoxo
