On The Outskirts Of The Gang

Rosa is a pretty, self-conscious girl who wants to be cool. She's a bit afraid of Jessica, the most popular person in the entire year. As she clings on at the edge of Jessica's gang, she notices things that slowly make her realise that there is something odd going on...

1. Tuesday 23rd September

I've made it! I'm now on the brink of being accepted into the Jessica's gang! I'll tell you how it happened.

This morning, I lost my hairbrush. Of course, this was a MAJOR disaster. If I'd gone to school with bed-head, any chance I had of getting in with her would be torn away. By the time I got to school, there was only about a minute until lessons started. I power-walked to lessons (running would mess up my carefully styled hair) and slammed down into the nearest seat. Instantly I regretted it, as I had made my clumsy flop right next to Felicity Indigo, Jessica's best friend.

Felicity is always elegant. She has glossy golden hair that was pinned back in an elaborate style. On her wrist she wore a pretty charm bracelet that jingled sweetly whenever she moved. Her deep brown eyes had been delicately outlined with gold eyeliner. She looked like an angel. The only girl prettier is Jessica, but she's like a goddess.

Quickly, I checked myself. I stopped slouching, pushed my wavy fringe out of my face and flashed Felicity an apologetic smile before turning to look at the teacher, who had just called out my name in the register:

"Rosa Callen?" trilled Mrs Olesson, our strict English teacher. I replied in my best meek-teacher's-pet voice, "Yes, miss!", then glanced swiftly over at Jessica.

Honestly, every time I see that girl its like a slap in the face. Her perfect blonde hair tumbles in waves down to her waist. She has sparkling blue eyes that either freeze you with horror or fill you with delight - clearly depending on whether she thinks you're cool enough for her to like you. Her figure is like a model's, and her lips are the nicest shade of pink. Talk about crushing my self-esteem.

"Today, class,"Mrs Olesson interrupted my thoughts,"we will be writing our own plays. They will be about bullying, and you will work in pairs. They must be finished today, as we will be filming performances next lesson to go towards a Speaking and Listening grade. Now, go find a partner and start working."

With that, everyone got up and rushed to find their friend. Felicity practically floated over to where Jessica was beckoning her. To my intense surprise, Katya Wilmers (one of the key gang members) came over to me and asked me to work with her. It wasn't a joke; I could see in her face that she genuinely wanted to. You don't refuse something like that. Everyone settled down to start on their scripts.

At the end of the day, I was about to leave when Hattie Goldsmith and Imogen Clarke (the other two gang members) jogged over to me. Both of them were wearing Emerald Velvet cardigans - a must-have for anyone who wants to be popular (I have two, that's how obsessed I am). They told me that they were meeting Jessica, Felicity and Katya in town for shopping on Saturday, and asked me if I could come! Not wanting to appear too eager, I said that I wasn't sure and would text them later (like I will trust my voice with something this big!). I am so excited!! I hope I don't mess it up. I'm going now, to text Imogen. Bye!
