14. This isn't Paradise, It's Purgatory

I walked on the trail, amazed at the beauty of the forest even at night. The stars shone brightly through the barricade of tree tops. I could hear crickets communicating all around me, loud chirps buzzing in my ear. The cool wind brushed against my face, while I continued to walk on the trail. I was walking for a while when I had a feeling something was wrong. I didn’t realize how far I had ventured off into the forest. The sign I saw earlier in the day wasn’t anywhere to be seen as I shone my flashlight all around me. I wondered if I took a wrong turn, the trails didn’t only follow straight but they had twists and turns. I tried to retrace my steps but only became more confused, there were no familiar landmarks either to lead me back to the campsite.

I cursed myself for my stupidity, I reached for my cell phone, I hated to wake up anyone but panic was prickling through my body threatening to paralyze me. I punched in Lillian’s cell phone number only to realize that I had no service. Oh God why did I do this, why did I go out by myself at night alone? This is usually the part where the dumb girl gets murdered for being foolish enough to walk by herself in the movies! I steadied myself by breathing slowly, willing my mind to stop thinking negative thoughts, focusing on how to get out of these woods. I still had my flare gun but with only one shot, I didn’t want to waste it until I felt closer to camp, that way someone would hear or see me. I sighed, and decided to keep on walking. I walked for more than fifteen minutes when I found myself even more confused, I think I made my situation worse.

I turned around, taking various turns I was sure I made, trying desperately to retrace my steps. My panic was rising, I sat down leaning against a huge tree trunk, not wanting to move to get further lost in these damn woods. I shut off my flashlight sitting in darkness. I decided I would sleep here tonight, wait until the morning light then use the flare gun when my friends at least had the daylight advantage of finding me. I prayed to God I wouldn’t get murdered, eaten alive, or get severely injured. As I sat there trying to control my panic I heard a twig snap, my head shot up searching in the night for the source of my panic.

My breathing stopped along with my heart, I waited for a couple of minutes straining my ears, but heard nothing. My mind was playing tricks on me, threatening to make me crazy. I tried again to relax, when I heard another twig snap, this time it was louder. My heart thundered, I rose up from my sitting position, and as silently as I could started to back up. A couple of feet ahead of me I seen a huge wolf bear hybrid animal. I fought back the scream building in my mouth, I covered my mouth with my hand. I stopped moving, I became fixated on the creature ahead of me, I never seen anything like it. This must be an undiscovered species I never seen any animal such as this on Animal Planet. I knew the animal couldn’t see me, I started to retreat silently. Suddenly twigs were snapping as the creature out in the night began to follow me. Crap! The animal didn’t have great eyesight, it had excellent hearing, damn, I didn’t want to stand there I had to get away. Fear took over, I broke out in a run as fast as I could, behind me I heard the creature howl as it ran after me. I darted through trees, adrenaline flowing through my veins, propelling my legs to move faster. The branches tore at my skin, whipping me in the face, the lumps already were beginning to form into bruises.

I could hear my heart pounding, pumping blood into my extremities, my lungs ached and wanted to burst. I’m going to die, here alone in the woods, mauled to death by an animal. Behind me I heard the creature howling, paws thundering against the wet ground, obviously this was a creature that had speed. Ahead of me I saw a clearing in the woods, where the bright full moon provided light. My heart skipped a beat, when a man stepped into the clearing, I nearly collided with a tree.
