The Day the Comet Came

Two rival gangs of children rule a council estate. Within the Starlit Vampire Parade camp, Eve holds a secret love for her best friend and co-leader of the group, Raven, but unfortunately he is already taken.
But what does any of this really matter when the world is about to end in a matter of weeks?

2. The Attack

Aoife was only eight. She had joined the Vampires just a month ago and, excited to be allowed to play with the big children now, skipped to the base. Her black star was painted slightly crooked, but with her black clothing and all her Irish dark hair and pale skin she made the sweetest and youngest member of the gang.

As she innocently danced through the alleyways, a huge Goldrat boy sprang onto her from the top of the enclosing walls. He was twice the size of Aoife. His spiked hair reminded her of barbed wire. He was the embodiment of the type of teenager her parents had warned her of. Leering at her, the boy laughed as he shoved her against the wall. He tried to force his fingers into her jeans pockets to grasp any booty that might be there.

But Aoife had listened to her instructions carefully. She remembered the call for help she had been taught by the older members of the group and began to sing the first few bars of “The Black Parade”.

She had not sung much before she spied the dark figure of Eve atop the wall the Goldrat had recently occupied. The older girl motioned for Aoife to keep singing as though nothing was happening as she planned her attack. Suddenly, thin legs whirling, Eve launched herself onto the boy, dragging him backwards. He gave a sharp tug on her ginger hair but she responded with a sharp knee where it would hurt, sending him reeling backwards into a pile of litter. Eve scooped up the now crying little girl and, kissing her hair gently, sped down the road.
