At sunset she stops in a stand of pine trees the wind rushing in their upper branches like surf and she sits and takes out her flute and plays piercing notes. Gradually the wind dies out and she wraps herself tight in her dusty clothing and huddles against a rock that still holds some ticking day-warmth. Like that she sleeps she does not even have to close her eyelids those thin veils of trembling flesh. You can shut your eyes but how can you shut your ears when your sense of hearing is so precise so she listens to her own heartbeat and she falls asleep and is only jolted awake when distant wolves begin to cry at the rising moon.
