Another Day, Another Death

Following the work of the homicide detectives in an American city.

Tackling cases that they consider run of the mill as well as more complex cases, that requires involving the entire unit.

One such case will bring them all face to face with the dangers of being a police officer as members of the unit become targets of a gunman.

14. Partnership Breakdown

"I'm leaving Homicide, being promoted actually. A sergeant position opened up and they're giving it to me."

"You're certain it's official, you're being promoted in this years merry-go-round."

"Yes, I am, I spoke to people in the know they told me it would happen this time, that it was just which unit I went to that was up for debate."

"Wow, our partnership is almost done. After all this time, huh! I don't know what to say," Grace told him.

"Don't say anything, just please, let's try to get back on the same page end things on a high note. I, I think that's why I brought up that stuff I wanted to get it all out like we've always done argue like crazy get whatever the disagreement between sorted and move on."

"Especially this time as I am moving on, I don't want to go with bad blood between us, so what do you say can we move on, part on good terms. I'd settle for amicable, so say yes and we can do be fine until the end, or maybe just pretend till we're fine."

"I want to say yes, I really do, but I don't know that it's possible Ben, I'm sorry, but I really don't know if I can forgive you in such a short space of time."

"What you did blew up in my face and it's eating at me that what your ex did has left a stain on my reputation that I might never wash away."

"Oh come on Gracie, don't you think you're overstating that a bit," Ben said; a mocking tone to his voice.

"No, I really fucking don't, you fucking moron, and don't call me Gracie, you know only my dad calls me that," Grace angrily spat back.

"Look, ok the mess I landed you with, should have stayed between Beth and me, I know I fucked that up, but I apologized and I can’t believe you’re still pissed off with me."

"It's been weeks and you’re still giving me grief, after the amount of time we’ve been partners you’re willing to let it fall apart because of what happened," Ben said.

"Ok, first an apology is in no way good enough to make up for it, and second, you think I'm the one causing this partnership come apart, then in all seriousness Ben, fuck you."

"I don't think I'm the one who thought so little of our partnership they put me in the line of fire of your once rational ex-girlfriend," Grace said as she finally started the car to head out to the crime scene.

Grace drove past the rows of the other detective squad cars as she continued talking to Ben.

"Damn straight I'm still mad at you. You know how much my reputation means to me."

"Still, you stood by and did nothing as Beth humiliated me in the squad in front of everyone, in front of that prick Kowalski of all people."

"Your relationship with Beth went nuclear and I got caught in the fallout, she slapped me accused me of sleeping with you because for a supposedly intelligent woman, she leapt to a wrong conclusion and then clung to it for dear life."

"Look, I apologized for not stepping up at the time, she caught me by surprise as much as you."

"I apologised for it happening at all, and I made sure I set them all straight afterward, particularly Keel and Hodges," Ben answered.

"Damn it, no you didn’t set it right, it’s a damned bell that can’t be un-wrung no matter how much you tell them what Beth said was bullshit," Grace said as she drove up to the next level, the exit on to the street.

"You don't get it do you, I had to go before Harry and Lt. Hodges to explain that none of it was true, even though they believed me, I still see the looks I get from others when we’re sitting together or happen to leave at the same time at the end of a shift."

Ben reached out of the car to swipe his security pass to raise the barrier to let them drive out of the car park.

"See, it’s ok for a guy, all those assholes hear a guy is banging his partner he gets high fives and free drinks all night as he gives them all the details," Grace continued.

"However, a woman even now in this day and age in this Podunk town of ours that’s it her reputation is set in stone all of a sudden, every asshat thinks he can hit on me."

"Which, if you must know, yeah, I have had a ton of guys on the job who thought they had a shot."

"Even though beforehand, there's been speculation, I am a lesbian, you know coz there are still the bunch of fucking hypocrite assholes working in this department."

"Ok, point taken, but... I... Look, it's us I wanted to talk about. More than just the partnership if that is beyond repair with just weeks to go, although I still think it's not too late, I mean we were golden weren't we, me and you, were a great team, how many cases did we put down, there were no obstacles we wouldn't bust through to get the doer."

"If you think that's done, maybe we can at least try to repair our friendship. Maybe a bit of distance between us might be a good thing, not having to sit opposite each other every day, could repair our friendship."

"You mean you can repair the damage, I'm not the one who caused any of it. That's all you. Well, not entirely all you, that's a bit harsh, Lucy can take an equal share of the blame for it, the shit that rained down on me and my reputation," Grace finished.

"Oh, you knew it was Lucy, so how long have you known," Ben asked her sheepishly.

"Long enough, that I could've told Beth before she accused me, but I didn't and yeah I kind of regret that now. "I told you were having an affair and told you to end it or come clean with Beth either way I thought I'd done my duty."

"That was enough and from then on I could keep out of it," Grace said, continuing talking to him, without taking her eyes off the road.

Neither of them said another word to each other for the rest of the journey to the crime scene.
