19. Mia's Story Part 5:

"Mia," He says, looking down into his lap as we sit on a park bench. The green paint on the wood is slowly chipping away.

   "What?" I ask, sounding annoyed.

"Let's run away together." His voice is a soft whisper and I can feel him looking up at me.

I crank my head to face him and he looks absolutely serious. I blink, waiting for him to say something like "Just kidding!" but he just continues to look into my eyes with his big brown ones. "Funny, Shawn." I roll my eyes and look away again.

"Mia, I mean it. Let's run somewhere far away where we can be together. Where we don't have to worry about anything. Where we can leave this gang. Where we can start over. We don't need this life here, Mia." He reaches over my leg and clutches my hand. I look up at him, wondering what the hell he's doing.

"Mia, please. We both need a better life than this." He begs once more and I rip my hand away.

"Shawn, we can't. We have to stay here. Stop your fantasizing." I lean back and cross my arms with attitude and mumble something under my breath, disgusted at his dreaming aloud.

"But why? Why can't we be together somewhere else?" He asks, sounding depressed.

"Stop. If the others find out we'll be killed." I snap, glaring at him.

"Not if we leave this place. Not if we leave right here, right now." He takes my arm and pulls me up off the bench. I end up so close to him that I can smell his light black sweatshirt. It smells like cinnamon and sugar and I'm almost tempted to just lean right into him and close my eyes. But instead, I pull away forcefully.

"No. We already have a life here. We can't leave. Can't you understand that? And even if we did go somewhere, they'd find us one day and everything would be over. Plus, we've already done a handful of bad things! The police would catch us sooner or later!" I whisper shout, glancing around to make sure no one's listening in on us.

"But if we stay in this gang we have more of a chance being caught by the police! It's best we leave!" He pleads, his eyes glistening.

"We leave-we die. We die-we leave. We are stuck in this gang. We are part of this gang." I press, staring at him intensely.

He moves closer to me, "Well, if we're such "Risky Rebels" then why don't we take a risk and leave it all behind."

At this point I feel like punching him in the face because he won't agree with me. There's no way I'm taking that chance. This gang is my life-if I leave it, my life is over.

"Mia?" I suddenly hear a soft, but loud voice and everything goes black. "M-Mia? Are you okay..?" A blurry face moves around my vision, dizzily. "Is she okay?" "I don't know....Mia?" The face starts to become more clear and morphs into Lily's face. A girl that goes to my school. "Mia?"

"I can't escape. Does that mean my life's already over..?" I mumble. Lily's face contorts like she's looking at someone who needs to see a doctor.

"Uhh..." She hesitates, not knowing what to do or say.

Suddenly, the lights feel like they're getting brighter and I squint. "Wh-what? Where am I?" I put my hand in front of my face and sit up.

"The nurse's office. You got hit hard in the head with a basketball and passed out. You alright...?" She asks, looking at me while awkwardly glancing away every now and then.

"What the fuck...?" I murmur, feeling slightly enraged. How did this happen? Lily looks at the wall, feeling socially awkward around me, being the shy girl she is. "Well, I'm fine now. But where'd he go?"

"Uhm...where did who go..?" She questions, nervously.

That's when I realize he's certainly not here. I must've just had a flashback when I passed out because I remember actually having that conversation with Shawn, a week or two before I shot him.

"Uh, never mind. Why are you here, anyway? Shouldn't you be at class?" I question, raising a brow.

"Oh, well Mrs.Young asked if I would go stay in the nurse's office with you.." She says.

I scoff, "Well then why didn't you just say no?"

She looks at me like I ask the most complex questions to answer. "Uh....well....why would I say no?"

I sit there for a second, thinking of Shawn...of how sweet and kind he truly was, but I could just never return the favor.

"..uh..." Lily awkwardly murmurs as I sit there, staring at my knees.

I look up quickly, "Oh, never mind. I'm sorry. Thanks for, y'know being here when I passed out." I smile and she slowly does the same.

   "Oh, uh, no problem, Mia."
