Princess In The Dark

Lucia is The Princess In The Dark, a highly ranked member of a large coven of vampires. Hiding in the gloom of the tunnels under London, her only pleasure is to hunt.
She lives this life every day, and does not feel even the slightest portion of remorse or guilt for all the lives she has taken. Lucia also happens to be the only daughter of their leader, The Count, putting her in a position with many enemies and lurking dangers, leaving more responsibility on her shoulders than she would have otherwise wished for.
She then meets 18-year-old James, and begins to notice that he is different, strange... And that he is changing her in the most peculiar way...

2. Predator

Lucia tapped her fingers on the stone table, and shifted impatiently in the hard chair. The wrought iron clock struck midnight. Nothing happened. The room was dark and dank, the walls a dark mahogany and the floor covered in a thick, black carpet. It was scarcely furnished, the only things in there were the table, chair and clock. Two doors led to the room. One behind her, and one in front of her. She was glaring intently at the one in front, waiting for it to open and The Count to step out. Still nothing happened. Why was he taking so long? She had been waiting for hours and her senses were screaming at her to hunt. Her throat burned, and every single cell in her body wanted to turn around and run out through that door. All except for one, it seemed, for she stayed stubbornly sitting in the chair. When I've counted to a hundred, he'll be here, she decided. If not... Then I leave. She closed her eyes, and counted. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 100. She opened her eyes, willing The Count to be there, but all she saw was an empty room. An empty room, because the hope had left it. All she had wanted was five minutes of his time. Just five. But of course he wouldn't have time for that, would he? No. Next time he came calling, she would ignore him. See how he liked it. She got up, spun around, and stormed out the door, her long, red, satin dress trailing along behind her. It was time to hunt.

The night was cool against her ivory skin. It was dark, only a few street lamps lit up the streets. Not many would be out and about at such a time, especially not in this part of town. She moved stealthily, like a shadow, makig sure she was not visible, searching the place for people. Almost all the streets were empty. This annoyed her, she would have been out earlier if not it had been for her father. She shook the thought out of her head. She must hunt. She must focus. Her throat was burning more and more by the second, and her thoughts were becoming less rational and more.. Animal. Her instincts were taking over. She moved along the wall of an office building, turning the corner to a narrow alleyway. There was a woman there. A man as well. It took her a minute to realize the situation. The woman was being robbed. "Help! Help me! Someone, please!" He was tugging at her purse, but she was stubbornly holding on. "HELP!" She took a closer look. The woman was in her late thirties, the man in his forties... This would do. She moved there in less than a second with her vampire speed, her eyes now fixed on the two. They both stopped and stared, shocked at her sudden appearance. "Put that purse down please, sir." She said slowly. The man just laughed, and snatched up the purse. "No!" yelled the woman, a look of horror on her face. He was about to run past Lucia, but she struck out her hand and gripped him, firmly. "I don't think so" She laughed, and easily pulled the purse out of his hand. She dug her claw-like nails deep into his arm, and a cry of pain passed his lips. Lucia smiled and pulled him up close, her face inches from his. "I am letting you off easy. If i were you, I would run. I would run, and I wouldn't ever come back." There was something about the way the muscles in her perfect face tightened, something about the way that her voice slithered around him like a ready snake, making him wince. Something about her that reminded him so much of a crouching, ready predator that he was sure he would never escape if he did not now. He feared her more than he had ever feared anything before as he looked into those gleaming, yellow eyes... He knew not why, and yet he turned and ran.

When he was out of sight, Lucia walked over to the woman and handed her the purse. "Oh thank you, thank you so much. You're an absolute hero, I can't thank you enough, I don't know how... How can I ever repay you?" Silence. The woman looked at her, puzzled. Lucia's face was hidden in shadow. "I'm Penny by the way. Penny Hart" She held out her hand. Lucia didn't move a muscle. The woman slowly pulled back her out-stretched arm, as the light of the moon suddenly shone on Lucia's face, revealing the broad smile on her lips, and her sharp, white fangs... "You... " The woman took just one frightened step back. But it was enough for Lucia. She lept forward, and held her tight to the chest. "No-one will hear you, my darling. You can scream all you like..." She whispered sweetly into her ear. The woman struggled, but to no avail. Lucia kissed her throat softly, and then sank her teeth into the woman's soft, tempting neck. The woman screamed and screamed, as she felt all the blood being drained from her body. As she felt more pain than she thought humanly possible, as she desperately tried to escape. This had no effect on Lucia, not one single thought of regret or pity passed through her mind. "Goodbye, Penny Hart" She whispered, as she sucked the last drops of blood from her prey, and chucked the corpse in the wheelie-bin in a corner of the alleyway. "Sleep well" She turned around, and rushed into the night. Her job was done.
