12. Chapter Twelve

*~* Chapter Twelve *~*

After several more attempts on the door the dents were increasing in size but unfortunately the door itself hadn’t moved. I was starting to get frustrated with it, something that was only made worse when I heard an amused chuckle.

“The door won’t open as easily as you think.” The voice of Cain said, “But if you do get through you’re all mine, whether William wants you alive or not.”

“I’ll take my chances.” I snarled back at him, even not being able to see him I knew that he was smirking, I could hear it in the tone of his voice.

“Will you take your chances knowing that if you escape I’ll just take pleasure in killing your little boyfriend, Tobin, who failed miserably in protecting you.”

“You can’t kill Tobin.” I said in shock, I hadn’t even known that he was here too, it hadn’t even crossed my mind that they might have taken him too.

“Even better, if he can’t die then I can take my time, make him suffer, save in the knowledge that he’ll never die. If you care anything for him then stop trying to break the door down or Tobin will find out just how ruthless demons can be.” Cain said and I knew that if they really had Tobin then I knew he wasn’t bluffing. I was confident that no matter what I did they wouldn’t kill me but they would hurt Tobin. They wouldn’t be able to kill him but he could feel pain and I wouldn’t want him to suffer because of me.

“Prove it, prove that you have him!” I demanded through the closed door.

“Really? Do you think I’m that stupid? I open this door and you try to escape. Not a chance Princess. How about instead I’ll go and spend some time with him and I’ll make sure you can hear his screams.”

“Don’t you dare touch him!” I said, slamming my fist against the metal of the door. I heard Cain laugh on the other side of the door.

“Just out of curiosity, when did you pick up Vamp powers?” He asked, “William wasn’t aware that you had more than telepathy and fire power.”

“None of your business.” I snapped at him.

“No matter, it won’t affect the outcome overall, you’re still going to end up dead.” Cain sounded so happy with himself, if I’d have been able to get hold of him then I would have been tempted to throttle him. “What are you doing here?” I heard Cain ask, his voice a lot more muffled than before, as if he had turned away from the door. I pressed myself to it, trying to hear whoever it was that was now talking to Cain.

Suddenly before I could make out who was on the other side of the door the sounds of a scuffle broke out. I remained stood, pressed up against the metal door wishing I could see out. I jumped back as I heard metal scrap against metal and then the door swung open with a clunk and a groan.

The person who stood on the other side of the door wasn’t who I was expecting it to be. I had hoped for Tobin, Ethan or even Axel to come to my rescue but it wasn’t either of them that stood there, smiling at me. Peter, in his gloating glory grinned at me like an idiot. His eyes swept over me appreciatively, if he hadn’t just opened the door from my prison then I might have punched him squarely in the jaw.

“What are you doing here?” I asked him, not trusting him enough to go towards him.

“A simple thank you would suffice.” He said still grinning.

“Thank you” I said through gritted teeth, “Why are you here?”

“I couldn’t let William do his little ritual. I want you all to myself, you see you’re pure the way you are, I’m not going to let him violate you but forcing another soul into that delightful body of yours.” Peter said, his eyes lingering on my chest, admiring my curves. “So are we leaving or do you want to stay here?”

“Cain said that he had Tobin here too.” I said, “I want to look for him.” I said bluntly. Clearly there was no love lost between these two but I was starting to realise the draw I had over these people. They all wanted me in one way or another. William for his dead girlfriend to come back to life, Peter wanted me as his un-dead plaything, demon’s wanted me dead so they could send the human world rocketing back to the middle ages and Tobin just plain wanted me. I was going to milk it for all I was worth.

“No need, he isn’t here.” Peter said.

“How do you know?” I asked sceptically.

“I watched him being taken over to the other world so that his punishment could be decided.” Peter said with a smile bigger than ever before. He was deriving a lot of pleasure from telling me this.

“Punishment? Why does he need to be punished at all?” I asked, I was confused as to what he had done to deserve to be taken away and punished.

“You really don’t know?” I shook my head, “He fell in love with you for one, he gave you his powers for another and then he left you unprotected. He’s lucky he’s immortal right now, otherwise his life might have been under question.” “His life? I don’t understand why what he did was so terrible?”

“Look, I’d love to stand around here discussing all the details about Tobin and your love life but can I suggest that we leave, unless you want to stay here of course. If not then we can have a discussion later.” He said mockingly and I glared at him, still not entirely trusting him.

“Fine, let’s go.”

“Fantastic, some un-dead blood sucker is waiting for you outside.”

“Why is he waiting outside?”

“Because he can’t come in unless he’s invited, this place is counted as a private residence.”

“Sunlight not an issue and yet entering a house is?” I said as Peter grabbed my arm and started to drag me out of my prison. I hated him touching me and it was all I could do not to hear his thoughts, my shields shot into place the moment his skin made contact with mine. I didn’t want to know what he was thinking. We entered a narrow hallway and then went up a set of steps which lead into a kitchen, a rather homey one by all accounts. I wouldn’t have expected it to have a small windowless prison in the basement. I didn’t have time to contemplate my surroundings because I could distinctly hear people coming towards us.

“Out the back door.” Peter instructed, practically throwing me in that direction.

“I can help you!” I said to him, I didn’t trust him in the slightest but he had rescued me, whatever his intentions were that fact was true. If what he said about the Vampire’s were true then it was a good thing that he had come to my rescue because otherwise I might never had got out.

“I’m immortal, I can’t die as Tobin has proved, just get out of here.” He snapped at me irritably. I didn’t argue with him, I opened the door and ran as I heard the first blows of a fight beginning to fall behind me.

“Anna!” A familiar voice called, when I looked over it wasn’t the Vampire I expected to see. I had thought when Peter had mentioned an un-dead bloodsucker that it was probably Axel seeing as he was meant to be protecting me too but it wasn’t, it was Ethan.

“Ethan, what are you doing here?” I asked him. I was still in shock from seeing Peter coming to my rescue and now Ethan was here too. These two were the least likely two that would pair up and come to save me. I wasn’t even aware that they knew each other.

“Saving you.” He said simply, his eyes sweeping  over me, checking for injuries of any kind. Finding none as they had all healed he seemed satisfied.

“I didn’t think you’d be here, I thought Axel or Tobin.”

“Tobin is gone Anna, I’m sorry. Your dad demanded that he pay for his behaviour towards you.” Ethan said regretfully. “We do need to talk about what happened but not here, we should leave this place.”

“But Peter is inside.”

“He can handle himself, our priority is to get you away from here.” Ethan said, he picked me up and began to carry me but the scenery soon turned into a blur and I felt very light headed all of a sudden, my stomach began to protest by making me feel nauseous. I shut my eyes and buried my head into his chest.

I was grateful when Ethan finally slowed down and then came to a stop. Vampire speed clearly wasn’t for me. I was guessing it took a while to get used to. He placed me on my feet and my knees buckled, I was lucky that with his vampire reflexes Ethan was able to catch me before I hit the ground, however they could do nothing as I threw up the contents of my stomach. It wasn’t much but it at least helped get rid of the nauseous feeling.

“How do you feel?” He asked as he held me up, rubbing my back as he did.

“Like I’ve not eaten and just thrown up.” I said to him with a groan. “How long has it been since they took me anyway?” I asked.

“They took you yesterday evening, it’s been about twenty four hours.” He said regretfully, “At first we thought you were dead, I couldn’t sense anything from the connection through the necklace, you had us very worried Anna.”

“He didn’t want to kill me, not really. He told me that I deserved to know why he wanted me. His name was William, I couldn’t sense what he was but he’s been around a long time. He needed me because his girlfriend had the same ability as me, to clone the powers of others. He was going to use me to resurrect her, effectively putting her soul into my body.”

“I know of him, he has been striving a long time to try and get her back. I am sorry to say I didn’t realise to what lengths he was willing to go. I should have realised that he would have been interested in you when he found out that you existed.”

“You know him?” I asked.

“I know of him Anna, I have been around just as long as he has, if not longer.”

“How long have you been around?” I asked him, looking at him now as if I hadn’t seen him before, at least not in the way I saw him now.

“A very long time, it doesn’t matter. Still feeling nauseous or shall we go inside?”

I looked up and for the first time realised that we were stood outside a house. Double fronted and with land surrounding it. I wasn’t sure how fast we had been travelling or how far we’d gone but we weren’t in London anymore that much I was certain of. There didn’t appear to be neighbours anywhere close by.

“Where are we?” I asked in astonishment, this place wasn’t a grand mansion by any stretch of the imagination but it was large, ivy trailed up the front brickwork around white sash windows.

“My home.” He said simply.

“You live here?” I said in amazement.

“I do, as well as a few others. I take it you approve.” He said with a kind smile on his face.

“This place is amazing.”

“Let me take you inside and show you around, as long as you are finished vomiting that is.”

The house was fairly impressive, it was extremely clean, furnished in many an antique, even the wallpaper I was sure dated back a fairly long way but it was exactly the kind of house I expected Ethan to live in. Paintings of men and women in old fashioned attire adorned the walls, I felt as if I had stepped back in time. Ethan clearly took pride in his home. It certainly impressed me. Looking around and marvelling at the slender of the house almost made me forget but only almost.

“What’s going to happen to Tobin, Peter said that if he hadn’t been immortal then his life might be in question.” I said as we came to a stop in one of the living rooms.

“It won’t come to that but your father is certainly pushing for a hefty punishment. He really dislikes how Tobin conducted himself around you.”

“He didn’t do anything wrong though, I don’t understand!”

“He fell in love with you, he was instructed that you were out of bounds to him, he disregarded that. He knew the risks and yet he went ahead with flirting with you and seducing you anyway. He shouldn’t have done that Anna.”

“What does my father care? He doesn’t even know me!” I said trying to understand what was going on and why.

“He cares because you are his blood.” Ethan said, “The elements are powerful beings, capable of immortality if they are careful enough, however the world isn’t black and white Anna, there is a shade of grey cloaking much of the supernatural world. The elements fall into that category. Your father is under the impression that they cannot be trusted. He gave Tobin simple instructions and he failed on all counts.”

“So that’s it, I’m not going to see him again?” I asked disparagingly. I didn’t like to think that the last words I spoke to Tobin being cruel ones. I wanted to apologise for what I had said to him.

“Nothing is certain Anna,” Ethan said, the way he looked at me now was unnerving, he studied me, looking at me deeper than I cared to be looked at. “Did you feel for him also?” He asked and I was taken aback by the question.

“What does it matter?”

“It doesn’t, not really but I would still like to know.”

“I liked him, he was nice to me, he stopped a demon from raping me. How was I supposed to feel about him?” I demanded from Ethan. I was beyond upset that I was having to go over how I felt about Tobin when I wasn’t even sure how I did feel. It was all a bit hopeless to keep thinking about it when he was being punished for loving me and in all likelihood I was never going to see him again.

What happened next took me by complete surprise. It was the last thing I had expected to happen. Ethan leaned towards me, one hand found its way to the back of my head and he pulled me closer to him and kissed me.
