The Reaper Diaries

Louise has an unusual job, to say the least.
She's death.
But it's not what you think.

Wouldn't it be awfully lonely to have to go alone?

The worst ones are the kids. It makes no difference whether it was cancer, a car crash, murdered... it’s gut-wrenching every time. Most of the time it’s old folks, who’re generally okay. There’s the odd exception, of course, sometimes they’re ridiculously grumpy. Almost nobody’s quite ready for it. I sure wasn’t ready for mine, so I get it.

Maybe that’s why I got the job.

The worst kid I ever had to walk was Lily. Little blonde thing. Looked like tinkerbell. She was dressed like a fairy. For Halloween. Hit by a car, too, it turns out. Her fairy wings had been crumpled and she was crying.

The worst part was when she asked me if heaven was on the other side of the door.

That’s the thing about being Death. You can’t tell them for sure, that it’ll be okay. So you have to lie, and hope. But I couldn’t bring myself to lie to Lily. I saw her there, hand on the doorknob, dressed like a fairy and covered in ashes, and I couldn’t say what I’d said to every other person I’d walked through. I couldn’t say: “I don’t know. Good luck.”

So instead I bent down and kissed her forehead. “Of course it is, sweetheart. Of course it’s heaven.”

And she smiled, and after she walked in I cried. Because I don’t know what’s on the other side of the door. And I knew I could never tell that truth again.
