Last Thought

1. Last Thought

She looked around,

Still and stiff, from the ground

She moved her eyes from left to right

Hoping to find company on her final night

Not a whisper, not a sound

No comfort to be found

She tried to sit up

And make the bleeding stop

She clawed and grabbed at the dirt

Only to get even more hurt

She tried to cry

Her mouth was too parched, too dry

The colour had drained from her cheeks

She hadn’t smiled in weeks

Her limbs were dusty

Her breath was husky

She closed her eyes and slowly breathed in

Gladly, she gave in

Amidst her own sweat and blood

She thought ‘Thank God’

And with her last breath, she expired.
