Ember Fullbuster is your average fifteen year old girl. It’s the first day of school and a strange boy appears at her front door, saying that she is a werewolf and will have her first shift this full moon. During their conversation, she discovers that he is a werewolf himself. Ember brushes him off, thinking that he is just pranking her, she goes to school as normal, but the day of the full moon, she begins seeing strange things. Her head pounds and she gets a high fever. Her vision fades into a red glow. She gets sent home from school. But when the full moon rises, her life will never be the same again.

6. This Girl

She stared at the message for a few minutes. How on earth am I going to do that?

“We could always talk to Joash.” Fulki said.

“But he’s bombed.”

“True, but he’s helped us in the past.” Fulki said. She knew she was right.

“Ok, but first we should talk to Ash.” She told her.

“And why might that be?” Fulki replied knowingly.

“The way he kissed me…” She trailed off.

“We will talk to Ash first.” Fulki said.

“Why do I feel like this about him?”

“I have my suspicions.”

“What are they?” She asked.

“I will tell you later, just text him and ask to meet up.” Fulki replied.

“Okay okay.” Ember pulled out her phone, found Ash’s contact, Little Liar, and pressed it.

“We really need to change his contact name.” Fulki said.

“Agreed. Where should we meet?” Ember asked.

“Somewhere private and where sound won’t travel that far.” Fulki said.

“Are you implying something?” Ember asked.

Ember rolled her eyes and texted him to meet at her house after school.

“Hi Ember.” A masculine voice pulled her away from her phone. It was Raef. Awkward tension filled the room.

“Uh hi.” Was all she could say.

“We’ll give you two some space.” The nurse said. Eden got the message and they both turned for the door.

“Look at me, Ember.” Raef said.

“What?” She asked.

“Just look into my eyes.”

“Uh, ok.” She said, turning her gaze to meet his eyes. He looked at her as if he was searching her eyes for something. Almost as if he found it, his face fell.

“What?” She asked.

“I see you and Ash are pretty close.” He said, slightly sad.

“Uh what?” How did he know that? Eden could have seen how I was acting during the search and told him I guess.

“No you idiot, I told him.” Fulki said.

“But you didn’t say anything.” She replied.

“Sometimes you don’t have to.”

“Yea, because he accepts me for who I am. Because he isn’t afraid of a little fire.” I said, annoyance present in my voice.

He stroked a hand through his hair, “Yea, I’m sorry about that, Em.” He took a step closer, “It’s just, fire is every shifter’s worse fear… Every shifter except you.”

She almost laughed, “You really think I’m not afraid of my powers. I’m terrified. One day I’m a normal teenage girl, the next I’m turning into a wolf with fire shooting out of my fingertips. I have no idea what I’m doing, everything about this scares me.” She said. His face unreadable.

Before she knew it, arms wrapped themselves around her, “Oh, Ember.” Raef said, his breath tickling her ear. Despite everything, she leaned into him, burying her head in the crook of his neck. He held her tighter, as if she were to drift away if he let go. For a long time they just stayed that way. Until finally, Raef broke away, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be doing this if you’re dating Ash.” He said, getting up from the bed.

“I’m not dating Ash.” She said. He looked at her, there was a spark of something in his eyes, happiness maybe, no, hope.

“But you kissed him and you liked it and he didn’t shove you away because of a stupid tree and-”

“RAEF!” She yelled, snapping him out of his rant, “It was just a bunch of loneliness and teenage hormones from him being naked I don’t-”

“HE WAS NAKED!” Raef yelled, fuming. He looked at her like she was some slut, “SO THAT’S JUST IT, YOU GO AROUND MAKING OUT WITH EVERY GUY WHO STEPS OUT OF HIS CLOTHES!” Rage spilling from every part of him.

“I have to get him out of here before he accidentally tells everyone we’re shifters. Any ideas?” She asked Fulki.

“Just maybe.” She said, “Yes, it will work.”

“What will.” Ember asked.

“Normal mages can become their element only after decades of  training, but you and Raef are shifters, therefore shapeshifting comes naturally to you. It should work.” She finished.

“Ok. How does it work.” Ember asked.

“Just do what I say.” Fulki replied.

Ember nodded

“Grab Raef.” Fulki said.

Questions and doubts seeped their way into her mind, but she followed her wolf without complaint. She trusted Fulki with her life and did as she said. She walked up to Raef and wrapped her arms around her wrathful friend, “Now what?” She asked.

“Focus on the fire flowing through your veins, but also focus on Raef. Feel your fire flow into him. Feel its warmth, but not its burn. Feel safe in the flames because you are fire. Push that feeling onto Raef.” Fulki instructed carefully. Ember did as she was told, soon, her vision turned fire orange and it felt as if her limbs were no longer connected to her body, “Good. She heard Fulki, now think of a place you want to go.” Fulki said. Ember thought of somewhere close. Somewhere private. She willed them to go there. Together they passed through walls and plants (which felt extremely weird) and soon found themselves face to face with a familiar tree. All of Ember’s energy left her. Her fire faded as their human bodies emerged. Even before her feet hit the ground, she was unconscious.

The world was dark. She didn’t want to move. She felt so weak. She just wanted to stay there until she died. To fade away from the world. She would just disappear. One minute here, gone the next. She was a light approaching. She knew if she touched it, she would be gone. She wanted to reach up and hug it. Embrace it. She wanted to be gone with the wind and swept away into the tide.

“Ember.” She heard a voice, but it was distant. Miles away. The light was almost at her nose.

“Ember.” She heard the voice again. It was closer, but still far away. Although it might have just been enough. She remembered who she was. Screw being too weak to move, she was Ember Fullbuster. And Ember Fullbuster is just a girl. A girl who has been fighting for everything her entire life. A girl who had to start the fight for her life before she was even born. A girl who lived when everyone else said she wouldn’t. A girl who never gave up. A girl who dreamed of a world full of magic and adventure. A girl who had the fight for that dream. A girl who has to live in a world where guys get paid more to do the same job as a girl. A girl who may end up losing the fight because she knows winning isn’t everything, but this girl will never go down without a fight. This girl will rise to the challenge, instead of backing away from it. This girl knows life is a cruel and unforgiving place and this girl will show life that it can’t stop her. Because this girl got fire in her soul and she will never just let herself fade away. Now this girl’s life’s got so many twist and turns you could get lost, but this girl will never let that slow her down, all it does is show her how to find her way through. This girl will never and I mean NEVER just sit there laying in the dust, waiting to be saved. This girl will get up off the ground, fix her pony tail and keep moving forward. This girl will show the world what it means to be strong. And THIS GIRL will never be afraid to fight back. So being the girl that she was, she opened her eyes and chose to keep fighting.

(A/N: This was just a short and sweet chapter. Sorry, I felt like getting a bit inspirational up there. Who doesn’t need some inspiration. Uh sorry if you’re a male reader, I am a female author and the main character is female sooooo yea. But don’t worry, the inspirational stuff won’t be female exclusive. Also, tell me in the comments which guy you think Ember should date, I really don’t know. And I’m just gonna say this, Ash is pretty awesome how he is, so not much really has to be said about him and Raef will get A LOT nicer, and he will apologize about a million times for how he treated Ember, especially after watching her die cuz that was what was going on in the last paragraph. She wasn’t unconscious, she was dead. SO UNTIL NEXT TIME!)
