1. Prologue

Sunday, October 18th, 2015, One Week Ago

I look upon the house with sceptical eyes. The bite of the October wind teases the skin peeking out of my half zipped jacket.

“C’mon Kati, just go already!” yells a voice behind me. I turn around to meet Cynthia’s eyes. I know I wouldn’t stay mad at her, and at this point, I had to do it.

“Just give me a sec, okay?” I face the old manor on the hill. A chill rushes through me as I eye the rusty gate and gargoyles.

“Okay… I'm going to go in now…,” I say with a slight waver in my voice. It's going to be ok. I'll go in, count to ten and the dare will be over, I think, trying to reassure myself.

“Here we go,” I whisper, as I take my first step toward the dark house.

As I walk up the driveway to the gate, a crow flies by, its caw like a warning. It sends a shiver up my spine but I press forward.

As I get to the gate, the moon breaks through the clouds in an eerie white light. I pull at the gate. Locked.

“Sorry, it's locked!” I yelled down the hill, but as I started to turn around to walk back to Cynthia, I hear a creak. I look back at the gate. To my horror it unlocked and opened.

“It looks open, Kati!” yelled Cynthia from the bottom of the hill. “Just go in; it's a dare, not life and death.”

The leaves around me stir as I continue up the path to the house. I climb the stairs which groan under my feet from what I can only imagine as years without use. My hand hovers over the door knob. You'll be all right, I think to myself. Just ten seconds and this will be over. I open the door and pull out my cell phone. Turning on my flashlight app and I look around. The first thing I noticed is the rather grand staircase covered in cobwebs. The carpet taking on a dull gray from where the sunlight had faded its color. When I reach the center of the room I start to count.

“One...two…” The floor creaks. “Three…” Another groan. “Four…five...six...” Almost done, I think with some relief. “Seven...eight...nine...” Without warning, the floor heaves and I am screaming. The next I knew, I am falling and everything is dark. My stomach lurches as I fall.

When I hit the ground with a hard thud, the wind is knocked out of me. I begin to see spots before my eyes. Then I see nothing
