Nant Gwrtheyrn is a deserted village in North Wales that I visited with my wife and two daughters.

1. Nant Gwrtheyrn

Clambering down the hillside path,

Childish chatter

Shattering the silent air

We disturbed them.

Their open mouths

Rebuked us as we turned

And saw the stubborn walls

Supporting only rafters

And the odd slate tile

We fell silent

But the children saw no ghosts

And chattered on

Seeing only stones and rotten wood

Rising through half a century of weeds

We could feel the chapel bell ringing

And had to step aside

For Sunday- best quarrymen

And their black shawled wives

But the children ran through the ruins

Singing, unaware of Sunday-sobered faces

Seeing only shells of houses

Around the sheep mown village green

We turned

Bodies and minds

To the homeward climb

And the hymns died
