The Show Must Go On - An Overnight Fame Competition

An Overnight Fame Writing Competition

It's not over until it's over...

When we think about ‘overnight fame’ the first example that comes to mind is Kyle Giersdorf, who won Fortnite’s World Cup at the end of July this year and saw himself $3 million richer.

However, this kind of fame lives vicariously and potently for a short while only to be snuffed out or buried underneath other such overnight fames. It used to be reality shows that had people become famous, but with the boom of the internet, it’s been easier than ever to achieve that; just look at these 10 unlikely people whose lives have changed after people on the internet took notice of them.

All the major companies have algorithms that try to predict (based on people’s preferences and their internet searches) what the next trend will be. What interests people the most so that they can bundle it up with a fabulous bow and serve it at an outrageous price made to look palatable.

For this competition, we thought it might tickle your muse to think about such Internet-famous people. We’re sure you’ve heard and read about such personalities. Some, if not a lot of them, become perfect bases for memes or the punchline of jokes/puns.

How to Participate

To take part in the writing competition, choose one of the categories below. Your entry can be a fanfiction, regular story, poem, oneshot, etc.

  • Write about the after phase of an overnight fame. What does your character do after the hype dies down? Do they try to bring the attention back to themselves and thus go against their own morality and ethics just for that bit of flimsy fame? Do they use that opportunity to do something else, grander than the dreams they’ve had until now?
  • Write a sci-fi or thriller story where they’re responsible for this overnight fame. Nothing is random or happens because this person really is talented.
  • We love reality tv. Write about this reality tv show that’s shrouded in mystery, but brings in people and programs that keeps billions of people glued to their screens...
  • Alternatively, you can create a cover or fanart based on the overnight fame of your choice.

Keep in mind, the story must be centered around overnight fame, be it that you choose to look at the time leading towards the fame, the middle of it, or the after.
