Climate Change Fiction (Cli-Fi): A Writing Competition

Climate Change is real. Climate change is now.

Write a fictional story that focuses on Climate Change and force the world to hear your voice! Because there is no planet B...

"Climate Change Fiction" (Cli-Fi) is defined by and based on real information and research about Climate Change, how fast it is happening, and the consequences that lie in a realm beyond our imagination. Have you ever wanted to do something about it? Every person, working together or on their own, can lend their voice to this cause in raising awareness and demanding that the leaders of this world take measures to acknowledge and counteract this threat to our very existence.

One way you could inspire others is to pen your own cli-fi, a fictional story that incorporates Climate Change as it's central subject. We aren't here to limit the scope, narration, or form of your story, so the only limits are essentially your imagination. Just what spine-tingling thoughts you'll evoke depend on your genre of choice: is this a world after climate change? A harrowing story of survival? A political manifesto told through narration? Help your readers engage with the dangers and possibilities that are at the very edge. We need to understand what it might be like to live in a climate-affected world. Certainly one of the things that you want your character(s) to do is to take the idea of climate change and put it in a dimension we can relate to - it will help us think about the problem more effectively. The great thing about writing fiction is that it allows you to hold ideas in your head and make connections that are difficult to articulate in other ways.

Maybe this competition will spark some new positive ideas! Maybe it will lend a voice to the next generation of solution-makers and action takers that are the superheroes of our century in saving this planet. Could the stakes be any higher? Perhaps you will stick with the well know facts about climate change, global warming, and greenhouse gases. This genre is unlike any other and we're hoping with this competition to inspire stories and fanfics alike that introduce us to new worlds, alternate realities, and futures where science, technology, climate change, global warming, factory farming necessitated by our circumstances have forever changed life as we know it.

So pick up your pen and start writing for a better and more clean world...where hopefully there will still be life on this planet 50 years from now!

How to Participate

To participate in this competition, write a cli-fi story. Your entry could delve within the genre itself or be fanfiction-inspired involving cli-fi heroes and heroines like Greta Thunberg, Natalie Portman, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc. Look no further than the brave and dangerous activities concerning climate change, deforestation, ocean pollution, and food supply by Green Peace activists & other NGOs in the Amazonas, Arctic Ocean, forests of the world and elsewhere where there has been campaigning and fighting against environmental degradation.

Remember that climate change fiction, cli-fi, is defined as, "a form of fiction that draws imaginatively on climate change knowledge and speculation in its plot, setting, theme..." (dictionary.com) and boy does that leave it open to interpretation. As long as your entry expands on this understanding of cli-fi, it can be included in this writing competition.

Prizes

Winning entries will be shared on Movellas' social media (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)

Best Story & the Runner Up will both receive copies of No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference by Greta Thunberg, or $25 to donate to your favorite environmental NGO.

Let's say writing is not your thing. That's alright, because we also love imaginative covers or similarily-themed fanart so if you're more interested in designing a cover, creating memes or fanart for your entry, then you may also do that :) Should we not have any covers, memes or fanart entries, we will select a cover or meme from one of the stories entered in the competition.

The Best Cover/Fanart will also receive a copy of No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference by Greta Thunberg, or $20 to donate to your favorite environmental NGO.
