The Murder In Our Summer - A Writing Competition

The Murder In Our Summer - A Writing Competition

It’s summer! It’s hot! It’s the perfect weather to get bloody and murder-y

People go on vacation during summer — usually. People also get frisky because there’s a lot of skin showing all around, it’s hot and blood flows quickly south. But people also think about murder. Be it sitting on a beach chair with a thriller book in their hands while looking out to sea — the crowd is having so much fun in the water, kids screaming and laughing, lovers chasing each other and sharing kisses, and then there’s you, sitting there thinking about how interesting it would be to have a shark suddenly appear and transform that blue water into a dark red...

Or perhaps simply going on vacation somewhere you're thinking nasty, graphic thoughts about that neighbor that’s so noisy or that person in a group you had no choice but to take into consideration the fact that since the dawn of mankind Thanatos (death) and Eros have always been locked in a danse macabre.

So many ideas and you can’t decide which bloody path you should follow? No problemo, amigo, we’ve got you covered!

Think about...

  • trips (school, family, business, cruise vacation, etc.)
  • retreats (writer retreats are a thing)
  • camping
  • interviews (what if your character accidentally interviews a killer? Should be fun to develop this).

Think about coffee shops and what if your character is waiting in line to get that divine nectar that only this coffee shop can make and there’s this unassuming dude or gal in front of your character talking on the phone. It’s all boring and slow, but then your character hears: “Ah. I guess he\she’s dead now.”; or “man, you’re way stupider than I thought. Even if you use bleach, they can still see the blood with Luminol.

What if your character is planning a murder on this trip he\she is going on? What if you write a character study in which you go so deep into your character’s head that you might not come out?

Or you can go with the classic one where two friends or a handful of characters find themselves sharing a house and they’re all writers, or just some of them. One gets murdered on the first night in the pool outside. Who did it? How? Why?

This last idea is reminiscent of a lot of movies and thriller books, but maybe you could find inspiration from the trailer for the movie “Knives Out” (2019).  You can also find inspiration for what type of murder you can go with by checking out this article which gives enough details about each kind of murder you can imagine...

Or consider black comedy: oops, I accidentally killed my best friend, what do I do now? Who’s gonna help me bury the body? Really, why did you have to go and die just from one blow you idiot! It’s all your fault.
