Book Review of Holly Bourne's Am I Normal Yet?

A Review of Holly Bourne's novel Am I Normal Yet?

Read more about her latest book and what movellian Molly Looby thought after reading it

"Normal at 16 =

Friends who won’t dump you
Parties? Fun?

A boyfriend?

All Evie wants is to be normal. And now that she’s almost off her meds and at a new college where no one knows her as the-girl-who-went-nuts, there’s only one thing left to tick off her list…

But relationships can mess with anyone’s head – something Evie’s new friends Amber and Lottie know only too well. The trouble is, if Evie won’t tell them her secrets, how can they stop her making a huge mistake?"

I’d heard so much about this book that I knew I’d like it before I even started reading. And I was right! I clicked with the narrative voice – Evie – right away. Everything she said, even if it was something I’d never experienced myself, made so much sense. Evie’s ‘voice’ is so realistic and honest, and I always find that so beautiful. You can’t help but love her. She’s so relatable.

On that note, there’s so much to relate to! You likely won’t relate to everything, but at least something will make you go, “No way! Me too!” and I think that’s one of the reasons this book is so loved. It makes you feel understood.

The feminism was so perfect too. Am I Normal Yet? explains gender inequality in such a straightforward, obvious way that anyone can understand, and we most certainly need more of that. Evie, Amber, and Lottie discuss many feminist issues that are so engrained in us and our society that many people don’t even notice them. This book tells you to take notice and I applaud it for that.

And as well as all that, it has a gripping plot, fantastic pace, and is impossible to put down. I couldn’t fault it in any way!

Am I Normal Yet? is addictive, relatable, and insanely readable.
