Polly Courtney is the author of six published novels. She started out as an investment banker and wrote her first book, Golden Handcuffs, because she wanted to expose the reality of life in the Square Mile. Having discovered her passion, she went on to write Poles Apart, a light-hearted novel based on her Polish migrant friend’s experiences in England. Her other novels have covered sexism, racism, fame culture and the summer riots. She likes to champion the underdog in both her novels and her broadcast appearances.

In late 2011, Polly famously walked out on her publisher, HarperCollins, for the ‘girly’ titles and covers assigned to her books Her latest novel, Feral Youth, is out 26th June 2013 and tells a story of friendship and lost youth in the build-up to the summer riots.

There are some seriously well-written chapters here, Movellians! Judging them is going to be tough.
PS who's up for writing my next novel for me, then? ;-)

I've certainly enjoyed readin them! Saw this competition ang thought 'no way, mate, I'm far too posh' but just saw this again... you mentioned stretching oneself! Thanks for the kick up the backside. I might as well give it a go :D

Take a risk. I was advised not to write Feral Youth because the theme was 'too niche'. I was told not to write from Alesha's perspective because it would be too hard to make her voice sound authentic. If you've got a story inside you and you believe there are people out there who want to read it, you're probably right. Isn't it better to get it out and see what happens than to leave it unwritten? I think so, anyway!

Plan your writing. Don't worry if it feels as though your story has been rattling around in your head (or scribbled on bits of paper) for months. That's a good thing; it means you're really thinking about the plot, the characters, their backgrounds etc. I spent at least 4 months researching and planning my latest novel, Feral Youth, before writing the first chapter. The walls were covered in Post-it notes!

I need to spend more time planning... I think that might be one of my weaknesses. Please have a read of my first movellas: Lone Wolf. ;D

I just want to say.... These entries are great! I've just read 'Strawberry Mansion', 'That Light We Call The Street Light' & 'Cheatin' On The Biggies' and I have to say, they're all fantastic! Keep'em coming!
