I handed in my longest essay to date today (six thousands words about the impact rape culture has on sexual conduct - man I love my degree sometimes) a whole FOUR DAYS early!!! Two of those days I have exams on but, you know, still counting this as a win.

So I'm going to celebrate by tuning into the uk ya chat on twitter at 8pm. I've only really gotten involved in one of these things before, but they're a lot of fun. Chance to talk to some YA authors (real ones - not imposters like me), book bloggers and just people who love books. And talk about books and YA and it's good fun and I think you should join me, y'all :)

I study philosophy and this module was the philosophy of sex which was like incredibly fascinating. Could have easily written several 6k+ essays on this topic.

And yesss! The #ukyachat is going to be great :) :D

So, finished the first draft of my essay this morning (this was like THE essay at a word limit of 6k and worth 20 whole credits all by itself) and then battled through reading Aristotle.... and I was really excited to sit down and WRITE all evening. Cleared my desk. Shut down everything except word on my laptop.

And then I realised that the novel I've been working on just doesn't work as a novel. Like, it's a good concept ish. Some of it's interesting. As individual bits of writing there's some bits I really like. I like my characters. It's just... not a novel. It's a mess.

If I were not me and someone asked me about this idea, I'd tell them that there's too many characters, they're taking on too much and they're stepping waaayyy to close to a whole bunch of things that it's probably best not to touch unless you're focusing soley on that. Oh, and a couple of the POVs are borderline pretentious. Generally, I like flowery language and pretty descriptions and profound crap in my novels much more than the average next person... but there are lines

And I don't think it's fixable. It's just... a bit of a lost cause, really. I think it would be okay in a chapter-uploaded-one-at-a-time-really-quite-long-story (which is sort of the medium i started writing in - I definitely think that writing in that way is a different art to writing a, like, novel because a lot of the time people read them differently with different expectations)... but i don't see how it's ever going to be a book.

Now I'm frustrated, wondering how I didn't pick up this a year ago and metaphorically bashing my head against the keyboard. I forgot how getting properly back into writing tends to entail a large part of my emotional well-being being utterly dependent on how well the writings going.

    I need chocolate and wine.

I just finished this fanfiction novel I've been working on... which is the first novel length I've completed since my big writer's block. It sits, finished, at 75k which is pretty respectable and, somehow, I only started this novel in October.

    Three months.

Three months whilst I was sometimes out and busy for up to eleven hours a day, with final year deadlines, with lectures, with the stuff I do for the uni paper, with the stuff I run at church, with the soup kitchen I've been setting up and, almost more amazingly, whilst still maintaining my social life.

I don't know WHEN I managed to write this novel. I honestly thought I'd been plodding along writing, say, a thousand words every few days... but I wrote other things in this three months too. I just... baclafidhaoifdoahdfadasdfa. I CAN balance writing and life, apparently, I just didn't even notice I was doing it :D :D

So, I don't want to curse this.... but I think I just got my writing mojo back!!

It's been a pretty rubbish period of time for me + writing. I sort of had a freak-out after being published. There are a lot of things that people don't tell you about being published/dreams coming true and the self doubt and the pressure meant I wrote basically nothing for a whole year. It was still an AMAZING experience, don't get me wrong, but writing is a coping mechanism and it felt so weird to just... not be writing. I self define as a writer. What IS a writer who isn't writing, anyway?

This year I'm back writing again. Mostly fanfiction, because that's kinda easier, I get to be nice and anonymous in obscure corners of the internet and I get readers I can interact with instantly. It just hasn't felt quite the same as it used to. I haven't had that connected-to-the-keyboard words flying everywhere, wake yourself up at seven AM (when you were writing till 2am and then ~~insomniaing~~) because you need to be writing.

But I've started writing on my phone when I don't have my laptop. Writing on the back of my lecture notes in lectures (terrible idea -- unrecommended). Writing in my head when I'm supposed to be talking to people.

Yesterday I wrote a 4k chapter of one of my novels in about two hours, and then proceeded to smash out 3.5k of my essay, and then another thousand to finish off the chapter. And I reaaaalllyy wanted to continue writing but socialising/christmas wrapping/ eating/ sleeping to do too.

    Here's hoping this keeps up :) :) :D

Thank you! And HOPEFULLY. I haven't been writing much Original Fiction really, but I have been working on the sequel & this one story that I'm really excited about. Two of my best friends/coursemates asked me to write them Christmas presents this year -- one of them wanting fanfiction and the other a few more chapters of the other story, so I actually have to get some of that written soon :) :)

Might publish some of my fanfiction on here though :D

Yessss. There is supposed to be one of those. Working on it slowly :)

I started writing by writing a bucket load of Harry potter fanfic (over a million words worth), and then started writing Sherlock too, but at the mo I'm basically only writing Supernatural fanfic. I love fanfic. I think it's so important and special :) :)
