9. the solo careers beckon

In August, The Sun reports that the band are to split in March 2016 for at least a year as they pursue solo projects, and won't tour their fifth album, which is due to be released at Christmas. Directioners' worlds crumple.

With their last show due just months later, on October 31, in Sheffield, it's all too short a goodbye for many fans. The report speculated on what was in store for the four remaining members, all of whom are millionaires, after Malik successfully signed a solo record deal earlier in the summer.

There is "a lot of interest" in Styles from Hollywood, Tomlinson is "very much in contention to be a judge on X Factor" next year and all of them are now faced with "a massive amount of options", according to the source.

It seems that Payne may want to fine-tune his songwriting, producing and DJ skills rather than a solo career.

There is some hope in sight for fans, however: One Direction "fully intend to get back together at some time in the future."

Furthermore, Tomlinson and Horan comforted the fans on Twitter, telling them that they were just "taking a break" and "weren't going anywhere"
